Francis Lawrence says that he’s been speaking with Keanu Reeves and more about the planned Constantine sequel. Lawrence is currently promoting The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes which arrives next month, and he recently told GameSpot that he’s been speaking with Keanu Reeves and producer Akiva Goldsman about their plans for the sequel to the 2005 DC Comics adaptation.

“So Constantine 2 got obviously held up by the writers strike,” Lawrence told the site. “And we had to jump through a bunch of hurdles to get control of the character again, because other people had control of the Vertigo stuff. We have control.”

He added, “Keanu and Akiva Goldsman and I have been in meetings and have been hashing out what we think the story is going to be, and there’s more meetings of those that have to happen–the script has to be written–but really hoping that we get to do Constantine 2, and make a real rated R version of it.”

Lawrence directed the original film, which saw Reeves play the famous DC Comics street sorcerer. The film also starred Rachel Weisz, Shia LeBeouf, Djimon Hounsou, Tilda Swinton, Peter Stormare, and Gavin Rossdale and grossed $230.9 million worldwide against a $70 million to $100 million budget. The sequel, which has long been hoped on the filmmakers’ wishlist, was given the go-ahead back in September of 2022.
