The Gremlins are finally on their way back…in animated form. Variety reports that Warner Bros. Television and Amblin Television are working on a new Gremlins animated series for WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service. The series will follow Mr. Wing, the Chinese grandfather played by Keye Luke in the films, as a young man who goes on adventures with the Mogwai named Gizmo. Tze Chun will write and executive produce.

The original Gremlins was released in 1984 and earned $153 million worldwide from a budget of $11 million. It was followed by a sequel in 1990, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Joe Dante directed both films. A third Gremlins film was always rumored, usually with CGI Gremlins threatened, but it never happened.

Kevin Reilly, the chief creative officer of Turner and direct-to-consumer, recently said at the TCA winter press tour that a beta version of Warner’s service will not feature original content, but the originals would launch in 2020. He added that not all of the originals would be based on WarnerMedia IP. He also hinted that major properties like Friends could be pulled from other streaming services to make them exclusive to Warner’s streaming service.

He said: “You can expect that the crown jewels of Warner will ultimately end up on the new service. Sharing destination assets like that… (is) not a good model.
