It’s a one-and-done for Lovecraft Country, as HBO will not be moving forward with a second season. HBO confirmed in a statement to Deadline that the critically-acclaimed horror series will not be back for a second go, with Deadline reporting that while a second season was pursued, it was ultimately decided not to proceed.

“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country,” HBO said. “We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”

The series, which was based on Matt Ruff’s book of the same name, was a mix of horror, drama, and fantasy with social commentary and starred Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors. Created by Misha Green and executive produced by JJ Abrams’ Bad Robot, it was a success for the cable network and eared stellar reviews along with a Golden Globe nomination for Best Drama.

HBO head Casey Bloys had told Deadline back in February that Green was “working with a small team of writers and they’re coming up with a take. She had a book to go on in the first season. She and the writers wanted to go off and take some time to go out and figure out without a book with these characters, what’s the journey we want to go on. We all want to be sure she’s got a story to tell. That’s where she is right now, working on those ideas. I’m very hopeful, as is Misha, so we’re giving them the time to work.”

Green posted to Twitter after the news broke to share a tease of what a second season might have entailed, with a map of the US that was titled the “Sovereign States of America” and noting that season two would have “[begun] in a new world, and that new world is a country that sits precisely where the United States used to sit”:
