It looks like Idris Elba will be donning his famous trench coat once more. Variety reports that Idris Elba is getting ready to return to the role of Luther in a long planned film based on the hit BBC series. The film is reportedly slated for a September production start, per Elba, who is also serving as executive producer.

Elba said on Friday (May 21), “We go into production, fingers crossed, in September. I’m so excited about it, it’s been a long time coming.” He continued, “We’re very, very close to pulling the green light on production.”

The series, created by Neil Cross, first debuted on BBC One in 2010, lasting for five seasons. Elba’s work on the show has earned two Golden Globe awards and a Royal Television Society Best Actor award for his portrayal of rogue detective chief inspector John Luther. Series 5 of the show debuted and aired in 2019.

The film is currently set up under the 20th Century Fox TV and BBC Worldwide Productions banner, along with Chernin Entertainment. Besides Elba, Peter Chernin, Julie Gardner, Katherine Pope, and Jane Tranter are attached as executive producers.
