Joaquin Phoenix Not Sure If Joker Sequel Will Happen

Joaquin Phoenix is open to the idea of a Joker sequel, but he doesn’t know if it will actually come to pass. Phoenix, who won an Oscar playing the DC antihero in Todd Phillips’ polarizing psychologial thriller, spoke with The Playlist and was asked about recent rumors that there’s movement on the long-rumored but never-confirmed sequel.

“I mean, I dunno,” Phoenix said about whether the film will happen. “From when we were shooting, we started to —you know, uhh, this is an interesting guy. There are some things we could do with this guy and could [explore] further. But as to whether we actually will? I don’t know.”

It was reported in May that Phillips closed a deal to write the sequel. There are no details on what such a film might entail, but Warner Bros. would no doubt like to see the blockbuster hit come to pass. In addition to Phoenix’s Oscar win, the movie won Best Original Score and grossed $1.07 billion against a budget of just $55 million.
