Lee Cronin is moving from the Evil Dead to cursed Egyptians, with Universal tapping him to write and direct a new The Mummy. THR reports that the Evil Dead Rise director is writing and directing the new film for New Line. The project was previously announced earlier this year but only described as a mystery movie from Cronin.

The film will be produced by Atomic Monster and Blumhouse alongside Cronin’s Doppelgängers production banner and is set for an April 17th, 2026 release.

Cronin said of the film, for which plot details are being kept under wraps, “This will be unlike any Mummy movie you ever laid eyeballs on before. I’m digging deep into the earth to raise something very ancient and very frightening,”

The Mummy has seen life a number of times at Universal. Boris Karloff starred as Imhotep in Karl Freund’s 1932 version, which was refashioned as an action-adventure pulp-inspired take in 1999 under Stephen Sommers with Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The property was rebooted by Universal as the first intended film in its “Dark Universe” in 2017 with Tom Cruise, but that film was a critical and commercial flop that led to the Dark Universe being killed in the crib.

In addition to Evil Dead Rise, Cronin wrote and directed 2019’s The Hole in the Ground which was his feature-length directorial debut.
