Halle Bailey Cast as Ariel In Disney’s Live-Action Version of The Little Mermaid
Variety reports that Chloe x Halle member and Grownish star Halle Bailey is set to play Ariel in the upcoming live-action version of The Little Mermaid. This will make Bailey’s feature film debut. She’s been performing musically with Chloe x Halle since 2015 after being discovered by Beyonce on YouTube. Rob Marshall is set to direct.
“After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role,” Marshall said in a statement.
The cast also includes Jacob Tremblay and Awkwafina. Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play the villain, Ursula.
The new version of the classic film will feature songs from the 1989 original as well as new songs from composer Alan Menken and “Hamilton” creator Lin-Manuel Miranda.
