Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced & Edi Gathegi Join Superman: Legacy, James Gunn Comments

Superman: Legacy is filling out its cast with some DC superheroes that will be played by Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced & Edi Gathegi. Deadline reports that Fillion, Merced, and Gathegi are set to play Guy Gardner (Green Lantern), Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific in the DC Universe relauncher. They join a cast that includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

Guy Gardner was created by John Broome and Gil Kane and first appeared in 1968’s Green Lantern #59. Gardner is the third Earthling in DC Comics history to take up the title of Green Lantern behind Alan Scott and Hal Jordan. He is popularly known as the most hotheaded of the Green Lanterns and has often clashed with other Lanterns and DC superheroes because of this. This will be the character’s live-action debut.

There have been three main Hawkgirls in DC Comics in Shiera Sanders Hall, Shayera Hol, and Kendra Saunders. It is not clear which version Merced will be playing. Shiera Sanders Hall was seen in Smallville as played by Sahar Biniaz, while Ciara Renée played the Kendra Saunders version in the Arrowverse.

Mr. Terrific was the name given to Terry Sloane in the DC Comics Golden Age, and was passed on to Michael Holt in 1997. Echo Kellum played Curtis Holt, a version of the character in the Arrowverse.

James Gunn, who wrote the script and is directing, wrote on Threads about the news:

“Superman: Legacy opens two years from today. It may seem far away to many of you, but it’s close to me! We have a lot to do between now and then. But I haven’t been more excited about a project in forever… and this cast, slowly coming together… holy cow…”

In responses to fans, he said that he included the characters because “they fit the story I’m telling. Story always comes first” and confirmed that they will play the characters in the entire DCU. He also confirmed that “The primary story most definitely revolves around Superman and Lois.”

Guy Gardner was previously set to be a part of HBO Max Green Lantern show with Finn Whitrock playing the role. That series was reworked to be called Lanterns and will focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they investigate a mystery leading into the DC Universe’s narrative arc. Gunn confirmed that “The Green Lanterns show is not separate; Nate will play Guy in all parts of the DCU.”
