The Shape of Water Tops Films at Producer’s Guild Awards, Handmaid’s Tale Wins Best TV Drama
The Shape of Water continues to solidify itself as one of the frontrunners for Best Picture, winning the top prize at the PGA Awards. The Guillermo del Toro-directed film won the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures, which is essentially the awards ceremony’s Best Picture award. It beat out The Big Sick, Call Me by Your Name, Dunkirk, Get Out, I, Tonya, Lady Bird, Molly’s Game, The Post, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, and Wonder Woman for the prize.
The PGA Awards are often a strong indicator of Oscar trends, as the guild makes up a strong percentage of Academy members. The Zanuck Award has predicted the Best Picture winner nineteen out of twenty-eight times, though it did miss last year as it awarded La La Land while Moonlight won at the Academy Awards. Coco won this year’s PGA award for Best Animated Film.
In television, streaming services ruled as The Handmaid’s Tale and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won the drama and comedy awards. The winner for Outstanding Producer of Long-Form Television (aka Best Limited Series) went to Black Mirror season four.
