The next film in the Star Wars franchise will come from Taika Waititi, and he says it won’t begin filming in 2022. Waititi spoke with The Wrap while promoting Thor: Love & Thunder and noted that his film won’t begin filming yet because he’s still writing on it and has some other things in the pipeline.

“Not this year,” Waititi said about a possible start date. “I’m going to be in New Zealand from August until the end of the year with Our Flag Means Death and Time Bandits and during that time I will still be writing. I’m still trying to figure out what the story is.”

The writer-director has has teased the idea of doing something new in the franchise in terms of characters and setting, something Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy has also alluded to. During a discussion with the New York Times, he noted that he’s at work on it, saying that he is “trying write the Star Wars idea at the moment. ’ve got to see how that goes, because once I submit it, that might determine when it gets made or if it gets made, even.”

While that means it may be a while before we see a galaxy far, far away on the big screen, there is no shortage of small screen Star Wars on the way including The Mandalorian season three, Ahsoka, season two of The Bad Batch and the Rogue One prequel series Andor.
