The Mandalorian and his pal Grogu will be hitting the big screen for their next adventure. Lucasfilm and Disney announced today that the new live-action Star Wars movie, The Mandalorian & Grogu, is slated to begin production later this year. The theatrical spinoff of The Mandalorian TV series will be directed by series creator and executive producer Jon Favreau (Iron Man, Chef, Elf).

Favreau is also producing the project alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and Dave Filoni. The film will be a new chapter of Mandalorian Din Djarin and Groku’s journey.

Speaking on the announcement, Favreau stated, “I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created. The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting.”

Kennedy added, “Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen.”

Debuting on Disney+ in fall 2019, The Mandalorian marked the first-ever live-action episodic television series for the Star Wars franchise. The show has since run three seasons and 24 episodes total, introducing the lone bounty hunter, Din Djarin, who calls himself The Mandalorian. Over the course of the series, Djarin becomes the adoptive father of a foundling child named Grogu, who is of the same race as the late Jedi master, Yoda, and also adept in the ways of the Force.

The Mandalorian & Grogu will lead the ongoing feature film slate at Lucasfilm, which also includes new films helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Dave Filoni, who is also working on the second season of the Ahsoka series.

Filoni’s upcoming feature will be set int he New Republic era, and will close out the interrconnected stories told over the course of The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka. Obaid-Chinoy’s film will be set after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, showcasing Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker as she seeks to build a new Jedi Order. Lastly, Mangold’s film will explore the dawn of the Jedi.
