Tom Hiddleston is now inextricably linked to Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he auditioned for Thor. And part of his audition tape has been revealed. Hiddleston was a guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and talked about the process, in which he auditioned for the role that went to Chris Hemsworth but got the role of the less noble adopted brother.

“You know, I auditioned for the first Thor film ten years ago in 2009,” Hiddleston said. “And I just thought I was auditioning for a movie. You know, an interesting part in an interesting movie. Back then the Marvel [Cinematic] Universe was only — they’d just made Iron Man, and I thought ‘Oh, I’ll have a go.’ Didn’t expect to be cast at all … Basically, at the time they were looking for sort of less well-established actors, so that the audience didn’t have an association. They just wanted people to see these new characters, these new actors. And the remit was, if you’re over six foot and you’ve got blonde hair, you can come and havce a pop at it. So I never auditioned for Loki, I only ever auditioned for Thor.”

Fallon then played a bit of the tape, which you can see below at 2:11 in the video. Hiddleston’s reaction: “Thank you very much, you really all are too kind. I think we can agree that they cast the right actor.”
