At Final Battle 2002 Gary Michael Cappetta interviewed Steve Corino about his new stable ‘The Group’. Corino introduces the newest member of the ‘Group’- Simply Luscious.

On January 1st on High Impact TV Corino cut another promo. Simply Luscious’ facial expressions in the back are hilarious. The newest member of the Group is Samoa Joe. He’s wearing a hat that says ‘I Killed Curryman’.

On January 8th on High Impact TV- Ace Steel gets blown off by Steve Corino. Daniels shows up and he tells Corino that the newest member of the Prophecy is Corino’s sister Allison Danger. Corino and Daniels have to be restrained.

We are LIVE from West Mifflin, PA.

Special K featuring Deranged, Yeyo, Hydro, ??? and Angel Dust come out and interrupt the ring announcer. They pull a Road Dogg by constantly naming the wrong town when they welcome the fans. Apparently ROH is about drugs and partying. Special K all start dancing when Da Hit Squad and the SATs show up. A Burning Hammer and a Spanish Fly are delivered to one poor soul of Special K. Another Special Ker comes in and gets caught and takes the Razors Edge (“I’m not going to jail!”) out of the ring. Poor guys. Mafia pumps up the crowd for the show and we get an R-O-H chant.

Before the show Simply Luscious and Allison Danger got into a catfight.

Paul London cuts an awesome promo about the importance of tonight’s show and his 4-way match.

Matt Stryker v. Chad Collyer

I believe this may be both guy’s debuts in ROH.

Lockup- no one shows dominance. Lockup- Collyer gets a headlock and a takedown. Stryker gets an armdrag and they trade reversals before having a stand off in the centre of the ring. Collyer gets a waistlock, Stryker reverses and Collyer gets a takedown. Stryker reverses into a hammerlock. Collyer with a firemans carry but Collyer gets right back up and they trade pins to the applause of the crowd. Collyer with a wristlock but Stryker works on the arm. Collyer reverses into a hammerlock but Stryker reverses that into a hammerlock. Collyer with an overhead wristlock but Stryker tries to reverse. He fails and Collyer reigns supreme on the mat. Collyer gets another takedown and another nearfall. Stryker gets an armdrag takedown and works on the arm. Stryker with a headlock and a shoulderblock. Collyer armdrags him but misses an elbow. Stryker with an armdrag and a cross armbar but Collyer makes the ropes. Stryker with a hammerlock and an elbow but Collyer breaks and works on the leg. Stryker reaches the ropes to escape but Collyer continues working on the leg. Stryker comes back with chops but Collyer goes right back to the knee. Stryker gets a backdrop and a European uppercut. Stryker misses a dropkick and Collyer hooks the Texas Cloverleaf but Stryker makes the ropes. Collyer with a suplex for two. Stryker with a sunset flip for two. Stryker comes back by ramming him into the turnbuckle and he hits a leg lariat. Two lariats and an elbow have Collyer reeling. Powerslam gets two. He hits a neckbreaker but overshoots a Lionsault. A cobra clutch pinning combination by Collyer gets two. Stryker blocks a rollup by sitting down on him for two. Big boot and he hooks the anklelock. Collyer rolls out of it and gets a near fall. Collyer goes for the Cloverleaf but Stryker gets a small package for two. Another sequence leafs to Stryker getting powerbombed and hooked into the Texas Cloverleaf for the Collyer win. Some pretty good mat wrestling here but the match was lacking drama and excitement which hurt it a lot. **3/4

CM Punk (wearing a D.A.R.E. shirt) cuts a promo about his cheap loss at All Star Extravaganza and how he wants to kick Shane’s ass tonight.

CM Punk v. Michael Shane

Lockup- Shane gets a headlock. Another sequence leads to a Shane front facelock. Punk reverses. Shane reverses into an armbar. Punk with an arm twist and he grabs a headlock. Shane reverses into a headscissors. Punk reverses back into a headlock. Shane rolls through a sunset flip and is able to pin him but Punk bridges up. They fight over a backslide and trade near falls. Shane bails and stalls to clap. Punk decides to do some clapping as well. Shane won’t do a test of strength at first but then decides to do one. Punk headbutts him but gets kicked by Shane. Shane with a monkeyflip and he gets a near fall off of it as he remains on top as Punk. Punk again bridges up and gets a suplex while they remain knuckle locked. Punk rolls through and ends up with the advantage of the knuckle lock. Shane ducks the Shining Wizard but gets dropkicked in the back for two. Shane counters a suplex but gets elbowed. Shane dumps a charging Punk out of the ring as the commentators bring up that Punk was trained by Regal and Fit Finlay. That’s awesome. Shane kicks Punk’s ass on the outside and hits on some ladies. Back in Punk tries to fight back but Shane hammers away. Punk flips up and gets a jawbreaker. He goes for a crossbody but Shane knees him in the stomach. He may be an asshole but he’s a smart asshole. Shane jumps off the apron with a fist onto Punk. He throws Punk back in for a nearfall. Shane with a front facelock. Punk fights back and gets a unique backbreaker. He comes off the ropes but walks into a clothesline. Both men are out but Shane recovers first and covers for two. Shane with a chinlock. Punk comes back and they trade go behinds. Punk blocks a Sliced Bread #2 and they end up both clotheslining each other. They slug it out with Punk winning. Punk gets a backdrop and he hits the Shining Wizard for two. Spinebuster gets two. Punk boots Shane but gets powerbombed (after going for a hurricarana) and that gets two for Shane. Shane flips off the crowd going for a tornado DDT but Punk counters with a powerslam and a split legged moonsault- for two. Punk goes up top but Shane stops him. Punk tries to sunset flip back in but Shane reverses and holds onto the ropes but the ref kicks his hands away. Shane with the Sweet Chin Music…for two. Punk blocks a piledriver with a backdrop and rolls him up for the three. *** They get in each other’s faces after the match with Shane not wanting to handshake Punk. Where’s Dreamer when you need him? They finally shake hands but it’s an intense handshake,

A good match but Shane’s rest holds once again hurt the match. He has a lot of in ring charisma but needs to work on his transitions because his rest holds always manage to bring down the crowd and the match. Punk was his usual solid self and this was an improvement on ASE.

SAT/Ghost Shadow v. Konnan/Divine Storm (w/Trinity)

Konnan made his ROH debut at Final Battle in a lucha libre gauntlet match against Divine Storm. He did not fair too well as he was blown up early in the match and was booed by the crowd. I guess he made up with Divine Storm and is in a 6 man lucha match against the SAT and Ghost Shadow. This is Ghost Shadow’s ROH debut.

Well after Konnan’s performance at 12.28 I don’t know what to expect here. Chris Divine and Ghost Shadow do some mat wrestling to start. Ghost Shadow takes him down and they again trade counters and reversals. Ghost Shadow with a hammerlock and an armbar but Divine rolls out and gets a leglock. Shadow rolls out of it and works on the arm. Storm gets out of the hold and gets a takedown on Shadow. Shadow trips him up and ends up getting an armdrag. Divine does an armdrag but Shadow kips up. Joel Maximo and Storm are tagged in. They shake hands and Joel gets a waistlock and they again look for dominance on the mat. Joel gets a go behind but Divine takes him down and works on the leg and locks in a submission. Joel makes the ropes. Joel takes him down and locks in a lucha libre style submission hold. Divine makes the ropes. Joel tags Jose and Divine tags Konnan. I hope he can wrestle without getting blown up. Konnan takes his arm down but is able to hold on. Jose tries to reverse but Konnan gets a firemans carry as he tries to hook a submission hold. Jose gets a bunch of rollups and they face off in the centre of the ring. Divine and Shadow are back in. Divine shoves him and Shadow shoves back. They get the crowd into it with clapping and Shadow yanks him down by the hair. Shadow gets a hurricarana and a kip up. Shadow with an armdrag and keeps schooling Divine. Divine finally gets an armdrag and a hurricarana of his own, Storm is tagged back in along with Joel. They do some lucha and Storm gets an armdrag takedown. Joel gets a facebuster and a sort of bodypress and a hurricarana. Storm gets a hurricarana and they start to slap and shove and then decide to handshake. Konnan comes in the ring with Jose and they do some lucha. Konnan with a rolling clothesline and a pier-6 erupts and we get some “old school” lucha libre. Konnan cleans house but eats a dropkick. Storm dropkicks Joel but gets dropkicked by Shadow who gets dropkicked by Storm who gets suplexed by Jose. Jose hits an Asai Moonsault to the outside and hits the rail in the process. Shadow does a somersault plancha onto everyone. Trinity does a moonsault onto everything. Shadow and Storm go in the ring. Storm gets a Russian leg sweep and they continue to do a bunch of counters and reversals. Konnan is tagged back in and he slaps him around like a bitch. Konnan kicks the ropes out from under Shadow and Divine adds a splash. Konnan and Divine Storm end up double teaming Shadow but the SATs make the save. Shadow sends Storm into the turnbuckle and does a flying Shining Wizard. Shadow brings him down with some sort of suplex and Konnan comes back in. Konnan dumps him out of the ring but Jose comes in with a kick. Jose and Storm go but Konnan interferes to help Storm. Joel kicks Konnan out and Divine does a tope to Jose on the floor. Storm and Joel go and Joel gets an enziguri. Storm comes back with a dragon suplex for two. Joel does a release German but Quiet lands on his feet. Storm goes for the Storm Cradle Driver but Joel goes into the ropes. Storm goes up top but gets slapped by Joel. Joel does a brainbuster off the top for two. Joel brings Konnan in but gets dropped on his head for his troubles. Ghost Shadow comes in for the save and does a DDT and a twisting elbow. Shadow with a cocky cover and Divine comes in for the save. Divine works on his leg and locks in the Texas Cloverleaf. Jose saves and DDTs Divine for two as Storm saves. Storm does a variation of the Storm Cradle Driver but Shadow saves. Shadow powerbombs Storm for two as Konnan saves. Konnan hits the Splash Mountain for two. Konnan hits a firemans carry dropper and hooks the Tequila Sunrise for the win.

This match was ALL spots as psychology was completely thrown out and they kept Konnan on the outside which was a smart thing. Still a very fun match that could’ve been a bit shorter. Ghost Shadow looked good here and I hope ROH uses him in the future. ***1/4

Da Hit Squad v. The Carnage Crew in a weapons match

These teams have quite the history. At Road to the Title DHS powerbombed the Carnage Crew through a table kicking off the war. At Crowning a Champion DHS helped Natural Born Sinners defeat the Carnage Crew. At Honor Invades Boston they had a bloody brawl that saw DHS win. The rematch occurred at Glory by Honor which saw Carnage Crew get their revenge.

A weapons match means that the Code of Honor does NOT apply in this match.

Pier-4 brawl on the outside to start- DHS kick some ass. DeVito dropkicks Monster Mack and Loc chairs Mafia. Mack rams DeVito into the post. Mack gets sent into a chair. Mafia runs towards the ropes and gets hit with a steel mesh guardrail. Mafia is busted open and takes a Northern Lights Suplex into the rail. DeVito hits Mafia with a steel container. Loc beats Mack with a steel canister. Mafia goes to work with the steel container on DeVito. The commentators keep defending the match since it is against the usual ROH wrestling. DeVito is now busted open and he gets a near fall on Mafia. Mafia uses cowboy boots as a weapon. Mack hits the LowDown onto DeVito for two as Mafia chokes Loc and uses some foul language. Mafia brings in a ladder and lay out the Carnage Crew with it. Mack slips off the ladder and hits nothing. DeVito hits a hubcap to Mafia’s head. Loc works Mack over in the corner. DeVito suplexes the ladder onto Mafia. Loc sends the ladder into Mack for a near fall. Carnage Crew hit the hubcap conchairto and a cowbell is used to cut Mafia open even more. DeVito takes a lariat by Mack and Mafia clotheslines Loc. Da Hit Squad start to come back and Mafia elbows the ladder onto Loc. The Carnage Crew’s head gets stuck in the ladder and DHS chair both of them for two. Mack starts choking DeVito and Mafia brings a table into the ring. Loc hits a neckbreaker on Mafia. Mafia goes for a suplex but DeVito chairs him the back. Carnage Crew set up a table with Mack on it but Mafia saves with a chair. DeVito gets crotched on the top. DeVito is put on the table and Loc is put on Mafia’s shoulder. Mafia powerbombs Loc through the table onto DeVito for the win.

Despite the blood and weapons- this match ended up being pretty boring to watch. None of the spots were very innovative or exciting either. I think the commentators agreed with me here as their constant defending of the match made me think they didn’t think it was very good either. Ѕ*

Special K’s Rolling New Year is up next. YeYo, Dixie, Izzie and ??? are celebrating. Slugger is in the back with some K Girls. Cut to later in the evening as everyone is stoned. Slugger (the guy people call Lennox) carries Dixie out.

The RingCrew Express v. Special K (w/Slugger) in a scramble match

Special K attack to start and clear the ring. Yeyo, Hydro and AngelDust all tope out of the ring- leaving Deranged in the ring to gloat. Deranged does a springboard senton onto everyone. Slugger looks on. Back in- Marcos and Angeldust go and Marcos gets a backbreaker. Blind charge by AngleDust hits elbow and a foot but the third time he gets a forearm. He does ANOTHER blind charge and Marcos hurricaranas him into the corner. Hydro comes in with a clothesline. He hits another clothesline and Santiago comes in with chops. Santiago powerbombs Hydro and boots him in the face. Yeyo and Dunn come in and Dunn slams him into the mat. Deranged comes in with a hurricarana and hits a kick. Dunn goes to the eyes and trips him up. Dunn knees his forehead but Deranged is able to take him down. Deranged kicks him in the head and Ortuga comes in. Deranged and Ortuga blow some stuff. Deranged gets a hurricarana, Ortuga hits a neckbreaker. Slugger comes in and beats up everybody. Angeldust beats on Marcos and rams him into the mat. Hydro does “another innovate move” to Ortuga. Yeyo does a suplex varation to Dunn. Ortega gets sunsetfliped by Deranged for two. Slugger comes back in and hits a bodybag onto Marcos for the win. Not as good as some other scrambles I’ve seen but this was a fun match that woke up the crowd. **1/2

Whitmer hits ROLLING DRAGON SUPLEXES onto Cabana but out of nowhere London comes off the top with the London Star Press and that gets the win. A hell of a finish to a fun four way. London sold like a champ here and really helped get the relative newcomers over. The match was slow at times but once it broke down into a four way brawl the pace quickened and everyone got to do their spots. ***1/2 Everyone hugs after the match and Homicide says a naughty word as he walks to the back.

Brutal stiff match with both guys showing some great in ring charisma and intensity to really put over the brutality of the strong style match. ***3/4

Low Ki and Styles are backstage. Low Ki says he competes against Styles cause he loves pro wrestling. But tonight- He’s competing against the Prophecy because he hates them. Tonight Low Ki gets his revenge.

Daniels comes out and puts over the Prophecy and introduces Xavier.

Christopher Daniels and Xavier (w/Allison Danger) v. LowKi and AJ Styles in a No Holds Barred match

I went over the backstory to the Low Ki v. Prophecy feud at All Star Extravaganza so I’ll bring you up to speed:

At Scramble Madness Styles defended his #1 contendership by defeating Daniels. Leading up to his title match at Night of the Butcher he was constantly being attacked by the Prophecy. At Night of the Butcher Styles lost a close match. The Prophecy’s minds haven’t been focused on Styles and Low Ki lately though as Steve Corino’s new stable has caused a big distraction for them. Will this cost them the match tonight?

Low Ki gets a concrete block (a nod to Unscripted which is what Xavier used to win) and chairs it right into Xavier. Daniels hits an STO for two. Styles saves Low Ki but Daniels hits Angel’s Wings on him…for two. Daniels sets up a table and goes for the Angel’s Wings through a table. Styles reverses and hits a Styles Clash through a table. Low Ki gets the Tarantula Dragon Clutch on Xavier and Xavier taps and for now- the feud has been blown off.

This was a terrific tag match with Low Ki FINALLY getting his revenge and Styles getting some revenge of his own. They held off on using the weapons and really taking advantage of the NHB stip until the end of the match which meant that the two moves Styles and Low Ki did at the end had a greater impact and were more impressive to watch. All 4 guys worked their asses off and in the end a **** results. ****

Allison Danger checks on an injured Daniels. He may have lost tonight but he still has his belts. Daniels also has some words for Corino as the show ends.

The Bottom Line- Another good show by Ring of Honor as the show had good matches all throughout the show with one **** match to finish it off. One thing I really enjoyed about the card was the different types of wrestling that were presented. There was pure mat wrestling, lucha libre, hardcore, scramble, strong style and tag team wrestling presented meaning that there was something for every kind of wrestling fan to enjoy.
