AJ Styles On Why He Didn’t Want To Be Called the Bullet Club’s Leader

AJ Styles is adamant that he was never the “leader” of the Bullet Club and explained why he wanted it that way. Styles joined the Bullet Club in 2014, shortly before he became IWGP Heavyweight Champion, and became an architect of the stable’s second generation after Finn Balor (then Prince Devitt) left.

The WWE Hall of Famer spoke about his time in the group on Cody Rhodes’ What Do You Wanna Talk About?. He noted that he never wanted the group to have a leader because that way it was about all the members as a group as opposed to being built around one person. You can see highlights below:

On Not Being the Leader Of the Bullet Club:

“I never claimed to be a leader of the Bullet Club. Our whole thing was — at least the way I presented it to the world — was, ‘We don’t follow anybody. And so therefore that means you don’t follow me; I’m not your leader. I’m just part of this crew, ’cause we don’t follow anybody.’

“And that was a way for me to make sure that everybody stays important, it wasn’t just one guy. Like, we as a group were a big deal. I didn’t want it to be about AJ Styles; I didn’t want it to be about Gallows and Anderson. I wanted it to be about all of us together. And I thought that’s what made it special. And you could tell we really enjoyed ourselves, ’cause we were having a good time. And I believe that when you’re having a good time, the fans will perceive it as something that it’s cool to be around or cool to be, I guess. So yeah, that’s why I never wanted to be the leader.”

On His Work In Japan:

“I loved it. I mean, if you’ve ever wrestled in Japan — which you have — it’s one of the best places to go and wrestle. They respect you so much for the ability that you show in the ring, the athletic presence and everything else that goes into it. They love it, and as long as you’re willing to give them your all, they will reciprocate.”
