Backstage Update on Jonathan Gresham Situation With AEW & ROH

– Fightful Select has an update on the situation between AEW & ROH and former ROH World Champion Jonathan Gresham. As previously reported, Jonathan Gresham reportedly requested his release from AEW & ROH after having a meeting with Tony Khan that was said to have grown heated. The meeting took place before last Saturday’s ROH Death Before Dishonor event, where Gresham lost the ROH World Championship to Claudio Castagnoli.

According to the update, Gresham isn’t currently figuring into any creative plans for ROH or AEW after he requested his release. Both sides reportedly confirmed that things grew “heated” behind the scenes. However, AEW sources indicated that they were happy with how the Gresham vs. Castagnoli match played out, and many are said to have respected the professionalism shown by Gresham by going forward with the match.

Additionally, the report notes that while things did get heated between both sides, apparently no bridges were burned. Also, it’s not yet been confirmed if Tony Khan granted Gresham his requested release.

Fightful reports that there was said to have been interest from “at least three companies” in Gresham before he signed a contract with AEW & ROH. However, Gresham’s immediate feelings after dropping the title are that he’s apparently done with wrestling for the moment. That said, many of Gresham’s co-workers reportedly think that Gresham loves wrestling too much for him to remain that way forever.

There is said to not be any connection to Gresham and Blanchard leaving the company. It’s also unknown if either talent was attached to being paired together onscreen.
