BG Says: PWG Enchantment Under the Sea

Enchantment Under the Sea

May 20, 2006 – Los Angeles, California

Disco Machine and TARO tackle commentary for most of the show but Excalibur takes his place for the last two matches. As usual be sure to switch the audio channel over to hear them.

Things broke down near the end but the first nine or so minutes contained some fine tag team wrestling.

Human TornadoVS. Scorpio Sky
Human Tornado VS. Scorpio Sky
If Human Tornado wins this match he gets five minutes alone with Jade Chung. Tornado attacks Sky before the bell. He sends Sky to the floor and hits him with a basketball before dunking the ball and then using the rim to swing him into Sky and hit a hurricanrana. He throws a dodgeball at Chung. He misses a dive to Sky and hurts his previously injured foot. Back in the ring Sky goes after the foot. He dropkicks it for 2. He puts on a leglock. He and Chung slam Tornado’s leg against the apron. He puts on a figure 4 leglock and gets some added leverage from Chung. The referee catches the infraction and slaps Chung’s hands away, allowing Tornado to turn over the hold. Sky gets to the ropes. Tornado hits an enziguiri. He hits a roundhouse kick. Sky goes back to the anklelock and grapevines the leg. Tornado flips Chung the bird as he struggles to the ropes. He drops Sky in the corner and hits the House Party. The final part of the move hurts his leg, slowing him down. Chung hits him with a low blow, but that doesn’t work on Tornado and Chung crumples to the mat in pain. Tornado goes after Chung, but it turns out he doesn’t need to as a young blonde lady runs in and attacks Chung for him. Sky pulls her off so she slugs him. Tornado takes advantage and hits DND but the referee is taking care of Chung. By the time he gets to Tornado he can only count 2. Tornado goes for it again but Sky counters to an implant DDT (more of a neck wrench suplex) for the win at 14:09. Tornado’s selling was suspect but this match was so much fun it’s hard to care. The interference from the blonde woman seemed out of place, but that’s a minor quibble. I really liked this and hope that there’s a rematch.

Austin AriesVS. Kevin Steen
Austin Aries VS. Kevin Steen
Aries challenges Steen to rip his shirt off but Steen isn’t strong enough to do it. He is strong enough to power Aries to the corner. Aries returns the favor but gets caught up in his Macho Man gimmick and Steen shoves him to the mat. They trade holds until Aries kicks Steen’s head. Steen comes back with a series of shoulder tackles. Aries tricks him into running until he’s blown up and ready to collapse. They knuckle up and Steen overpowers Aries. Aries goes to the eyes again but this time Steen returns the favor. Steen pokes him three more times. He hits a powerslam for 2. He catches Aries with an Ace Crusher for 2. He hits a gutbuster and climbs the ropes. Aries knocks him down and hits a dropkick in the corner for 2. He low bridges Steen to the floor and follows him out with the Heat Seeking Missile. Back in the ring Aries hits a slingshot splash for 2. He climbs the ropes and hits the double axe handle. He climbs again and hits the flying elbowdrop for 2. He blocks the package piledriver and gets a backslide for 2. Steen counters the brainbuster to the package piledriver for the win at 16:11. Aries’s Macho shtick just isn’t doing it for me and he completely dominated this match. The only thing I really liked was Steen’s reversal to finish the match.

He kicks out Disco’s knees. He hits Nemesis with a big boot and a flapjack. Nemesis & Disco miss elbowdrops and are kicked by Perkins & Romero as a result. Romero knocks Nemesis down with a knee kick. He puts on the cross armbreaker but Nemesis gets to the ropes. Perkins tags in and walks into a facebuster. Disco tags in and sets Perkins up top. Perkins dives down and hits a brainbuster for 2. Romero tags in but Disco evades his opponents. Nemesis dropkicks both opponents. Perkins hits a crossbody on Nemesis. Disco hits Romero with the Chokebreaker for 2. Boo. Romero pops up but runs into another Chokebreaker, giving Disco the win at 15:40. Typical tag team formula here with some extra fun thrown in for good measure. I was sure that Romero & Perkins would go over, so the result was a nice surprise.

Joey RyanVS. Chris Sabin
Joey Ryan © VS. Chris Sabin [PWG World Championship Match]
At this point Frankie Kazarian had been named number one contender to Ryan’s title after pinning the champ in a tag team match. He stole that spot from B-Boy who had earned it in a mini-tournament. While Kazarian should have received his title shot here, Scorpio Sky mucked things up. After cutting off Kazarian’s ponytail on the last show Sky began receiving death threats. He contacted Commissioner Dino Winwood, notifying him that he suspected Kazarian and so he’d taken out a restraining order. Kazarian’s title shot was thus delayed until the mess could be sorted out. B-Boy seemed to be the logical replacement, but Ryan would have none of it. He said that only the number one contender could receive a shot, but to appease the commissioner he said he’d defend the belt against anyone except B-Boy. Being that Sabin had come the closest to taking Ryan’s title to that point Winwood gave him a rematch here. Winwood also appointed himself the special referee for the match.

Winwood leads a “die Joey die,” chant, upsetting the champion. Ryan and Sabin lock up to start. Sabin works the arm. He hits a shoulder tackle and lets Ryan stand up. He hits a series of armdrags. Ryan swings wild and collapses. Sabin chops him to the floor. Ryan gets back in the ring and runs into a drop toehold. Sabin stomps on his head. He hits a backbreaker and a double jump elbowdrop for 2. He hits a dropkick to the back. Ryan returns fire by ramming Sabin hard into the post. He shoves Sabin’s back into the apron repeatedly. Back in the ring Ryan gets 1; revealing Winwood is going to be biased towards Sabin. Ryan hits a vertical suplex for another slow 1 count. He puts on a chinlock. The fans get distracted by each other as Ryan hits a spear. Sabin blocks a superkick. Their heads collide and Sabin falls onto Ryan’s crotch. Sabin hits a dropkick. He stomps on Ryan’s foot and hits a basement dropkick. He rolls Ryan up for a quick 2 count. He hits a swinging DDT for another quick 2 count. Ryan hits a pumphandle suplex. He hits a powerbomb for a slow 2 count. Sabin hits a hurricanrana. He hits an enziguiri. He hits the Over Easy DDT for a quick 2 count. He hits a springboard dropkick to the knee. He works over Ryan’s leg in the corner. Ryan bails and Winwood keeps Sabin from diving out after him. Ryan grabs the title belt and lays Sabin out with it. Winwood refuses to disqualify Ryan. Ryan throws a tantrum and lays Winwood out with the belt. Sabin comes to and hits Ryan with the Cradle Shock. Referee Rick Knox runs out but can only count 2 before Scorpio Sky pulls him to the floor. Sabin hits Sky with a suicide dive. Back in the ring Sabin hits Ryan with a dragon screw and put on a leglock. Knox gets back in the ring and calls for the bell as Ryan taps out at 16:19. Sabin celebrates with the belt but sadly Knox reveals that Sabin has only won the match by disqualification due to Sky’s interference. The match wasn’t particularly entertaining before all the extra curricular activities at the end.

El GenericoQuicksilverVS. Mark BriscoeJay Briscoe
El Generico & Quicksilver VS. Mark & Jay Briscoe
This is the Briscoes’ first match back in PWG in just over two and a half years. They would have been back earlier but their have addictive personalities got in the way. Generico cleans house, hitting a dropkick on Jay and the swinging DDT on Mark. He follows Jay out to the floor with the Asai moonsault. Mark knocks Generico off the apron to the floor by jumping over the ropes and hitting a head scissors takedown. Can’t say I’ve seen that before. Back in the ring Jay hits Generico with the press DVD for 2. Mark tags in and hits the exploder. Quicksilver tags in and jumps into an exploder. That gets 2 for Mark. Mark powerbombs Quicksilver into the Ace Crusher from Jay for 2. Jay tags in and the Briscoes go for the Doomsday Device but Quicksilver counters to a victory roll for 2. He kicks Jay in the corner and tags to Generico. Generico comes off the top with a crossbody for 2. I hate the way Jay jumps up to take that move. Jay escapes the brainbuster and the Briscoes just barely hit an awkward looking Doomsday Device for 2 when Quicksilver saves. Quicksilver drags Generico to his corner and tags himself into the match. He hits Jay with the Silver Slice for 2. He takes Mark from the apron to the floor with a sunset bomb. Generico hits Jay with the Yakuza kick and Quicksilver hits the reverse head scissors takedown. Generico hits a brainbuster for the win at 18:01. The commentators annoyingly switched the Briscoes’ names up, but if that kind of thing bothers you the commentary can be switched to silence. The match was a tad on the sloppy side but it was a fine exhibition to the 2006 PWG fans of what the Briscoes are about.

American DragonVS. Claudio Castagnoli
American Dragon VS. Claudio Castagnoli
They lock up but neither man can gain an early advantage. They knuckle up and Castagnoli powers Dragon to the mat for 2. Dragon puts on a stranglehold but Castagnoli flings him across the ring to escape. They fight over a wristlock. Dragon puts on the Mexican chinlock but Castagnoli chops his way out of it. Dragon gets a sunset flip for 2. They trade holds until Castagnoli takes control with a headlock. He keeps it on for a while and after a couple minutes gets a takeover. Dragon rolls him up for 2. Castagnoli keeps the hold on through Dragon ramming him into the corner and rolling him up again. He keeps Dragon from countering to the head scissors. He holds on through an atomic drop. Dragon hits another atomic drop but Castagnoli doesn’t release the headlock and actually pins Dragon for 2. Dragon hits knees to the back but Castagnoli won’t let go. Castagnoli holds on through a back suplex, though Dragon is able to get a 2 count. A minute later Dragon hits another back suplex for 2 but can’t escape the hold. Half the crowd starts to turn on the match but the other half defends it. Dragon tries to elbow out so Castagnoli hits another takeover for 2. Dragon finally escapes and rolls Castagnoli up for the win at 16:38. As impressive as it was that Castagnoli was able to keep a headlock mildly entertaining for as long as he did (eleven minutes) the long segment completely deflated the crowd and it didn’t make sense that Dragon wouldn’t just grab the ropes to force the break. Also the finish killed me a little bit inside. This may have worked in front of a Ring of Honor crowd given the right circumstances, but was very risky in PWG. I’ll give this novelty points, but it also loses points for Dragon not really selling the damage from the headlock after the match.

B-BoyVS. Matt Sydal
B-Boy VS. Matt Sydal
They fight on the mat to start. B-Boy cartwheels through a head scissors takedown. He hits a forearms but Sydal catches him with a head scissors takedown. He comes off the second rope with a double stomp to the back of the head for 2. He puts on a two-in-one but Sydal fights out of it. Sydal hits an enziguiri. B-Boy counters a hurricanrana to a powerbomb for 2. He deserves a lot of credit as the powerbomb was a cover up for a botched attempt by Sydal to hurricanrana him to the floor. Sydal kicks B-Boy to the floor and comes off the top with a moonsault. Back in the ring Sydal gets a victory roll into a jackknife pin for 2. B-Boy gets a roll up for 2. Sydal hits the Slice for 2. He washes B-Boy’s face. B-Boy hits an overhead suplex. He hits the Spiderbomb for 2. He puts on a cloverleaf but Sydal gets to the ropes. Between successfully recovering from a nearly botched spot and the consistent action throughout we got an enjoyable outing. The only drawback was the series of unfathomable kick outs down the stretch.

He hits an overhead suplex on Lost and a back bodydrop on Bosh. He hits Lost with a springboard dropkick. He hits a running forearm and a lariat for 2. Richards goes for the shooting star press but it hits Lost’s knees.

Bosh hits Dragon with a swinging DDT on the apron that looked like it should have caused a permanent injury. Lost puts Richards in the Sharpshooter. Richards gets to the ropes. Lost suplexes Richards over the top rope to the floor, himself falling out in the process. The match screeches to a halt as Richards seems to be legitimately injured. Back in the ring Richards favors his knee. He slaps Lost, calling him stupid in a “shoot” style moment. Lost disregards him and attacks the knee. Bosh tags in and bites the knee. He hits a fistdrop and puts on a heel hook. Richards escapes with a kick to the head. Lost tags in and puts on a figure 4 leglock. To his credit Richards tries to block it with his hand, but to no avail. He turns the hold over but Bosh breaks it up. Lost tags in and walks into an exploder. Richards hits Bosh with an enziguiri. He hits the Steiner Screwdriver on the belt. Lost puts on the Sharpshooter and the title win is academic at 30:54. This did a very good job of reestablishing Arrogance as a credible team, which is fortunate because nothing is worse than lame duck champions. The finish wasn’t executed with as much precision as I would have liked but the thirty-minute match leading up to it was good enough to make up for it.
Rating: ***¾

After the match the new champions celebrate with Sky, Ryan and Chung. Bosh hits the referee with a stunner. He suicide dives a chair into Dragon’s face. He rolls him into the ring where all four men take shots on him. Sky hits him with the Curb Stomp onto a chair. Lost puts him in the Sharpshooter. While in the hold Ryan and Sky lift his head onto a chair. Bosh climbs the ropes and hits a double stomp to Dragon’s head. That’d kill just about anyone. Sky gets on the microphone. He says Ryan convinced him that Lost did him a favor by taking his mask. Now they’re all good friends. He’s hated Dragon his entire career, and now they’re going to end his. Ryan sets up two tables on the floor and puts Dragon through them with the Mustache Ride. Sky dubs this new group the Dynasty. Bosh takes the microphone and talks about winning the Battle of Los Angeles. The fans were behind him as he challenged for the PWG Championship, but that got him nowhere. The PWG Six screwed him over, so to keep that from happening again he’s aligned himself two of them (Ryan and Lost). He hates the fans because no matter how much he killed himself for them they only wanted to see Dragon. He promises to become PWG Champion. The Dynasty clears the ring and moments later Richards recovers. He gets on the microphone and vows to get the titles back and he’ll run through the entire group to do so. He also promises to win the PWG Championship. He looks at Dragon, thanks him for their elongated title run and hugs his unconscious partner. That’s a little creepy. It really speaks volumes about Dragon’s douche attitude that nobody ran out to save him.

Highlighting the BONUS button on the main menu will reveal the following backstage shenanigans
Austin Aries hasn’t enjoyed hanging out with the other wrestlers in PWG. He goes through a Billy Graham inspired rant. I hate this gimmick.

Claudio Castagnoli cuts a promo in Swiss. He puts a medicine ball in a headlock. That’s all I got from this.

Dino Winwood in a panda mask makes Jay Briscoe laugh through a promo about his night in PWG.

Kevin Steen recaps the night. He’s happy the Briscoes and Sydal returned. He doesn’t have much to say about the formation of the Dynasty. He does have a lot to say about beating Aries. Doing so made him realize that he’s been goofing around too much. When he was vicious he became PWG Champion, and since losing the belt he’s just had fun. He got lost in the shuffle. He’s sick of it so it’s time that he gets serious again. Battle of Los Angeles is coming up so he’s going to use that to get back to the top of PWG. He’s wrestling Excalibur on the next show and despite their friendship when they were in the New S.B.S. he has to kill Excalibur to get back into a vicious groove.

The 411BG Says

I said in my review of the late January PWG show that I wasn’t interested in any of the feuds going on outside of some interest in the title scene. Now I can honestly say that the angles up and down the card are all engaging, mostly due to the fact that they’re all progressing logically and excitingly. This show had a great main event that was topped by the formation of the Dynasty (although that entire angle is spoiled on the DVD cover and main menu). The rest of the show is filled with solid outings from the Briscoes, Cape Fear, Sydal, B-Boy, Tornado and Sky. It also has the novelty Danielson vs. Castagnoli match. There are more than a few things worth your dollar on this show.
