Bret Hart recently recalled his match with Scott Hall at the 1993 Royal Rumble and why Hall “hated” the match. Hart defended the WWF Championship against Hall (then Razor Ramon) at the 1993 Rumble. Hart was in the midst of his first run with the title at that point.
The WWE Hall of Famer spoke with Studio 1 Sports Channel for a new interview and was asked about that match. He recalled how he liked the match but that Hall hated it, in part because he threw out all of Hall’s idea and laid out the match for them. You can see the highlights below:
On Facing Scott Hall At the 1993 Royal Rumble:
“You know the funny thing about that match was that Scott Hall, he hated it. He was so — you know, I had never worked with Scott and I didn’t know him very well. I only knew he he been in the business a short time and never made it to WWF or NWA or anywhere else. He never kind of broke out, he was an AWA wrestler that worked part-time I think, or worked in Japan maybe. I don’t know what his career was like before, but he was not really well-known or established, or anything like that.”
On Why Hall Hated the Match:
“It was after that [being talked to by Vince McMahon about being the champion] that I was like, ‘I’m going to tell people what to do. I know what to do and I know better than anyone what to do, and I’m going to do what I want to do. I’m not taking orders from Scott.’ I remember with Scott Hall, I was like, ‘How long you been in the business?’ He was like, ‘Four or five years or something.’ ‘I never heard you, I’m going to take orders from you, or you’re going to call the whole match?’
“Anyway, he came in the dressing room and he had a bunch of pages written out of what he wanted to do, and he was thinking about it, and he had this whole match. And I remembered looking at it like, flipping through his pages, and I go, ‘We’re not doing any of this.’ And he was just crushed. I said, ‘This is all stuff that is so rehearsed and so predictable.’ And it was all very grade one elementary wrestling. It was more of a guy trying to get his moves in then tell a story.”
On Laying Out the Match:
“Anyway, I shot his whole thing down and said, ‘We’re not doing any of it.’ And sat him down and said, ‘This is what we’re doing.’ I laid out the whole match for that Rumble and he was just in a pissy mood for it. He did not like it. If anything, he never got over it. And it was just a shame because I think it was the best match he ever had. I still think it was the best match he ever had, at least with me for sure.”
On the Match Itself:
“I love the Rumble match, just because I liked it for, you really knew what was going to happen and where it was going and it was pretty physical and believable. And I like the finish. I kind of thought the whole thing was good.”
