Kickoff Show Match: Rusev and Lana vs. Zelina Vega and Andrade “Cien” Almas: Almas and Rusev to begin. Almas runs away and we get some traquilo in the ropes. Rusev chases again, Almas cuts him off and they work back into the ring where Rusev takes control, beating down Almas in the corner. Rusev follows with a suplex, Vega distracts him, allowing Almas to post Rusev. The hanging arm bar follows, and Almas now grounds the action. Vega takes Lana to the floor, stopping the tag, as Almas connects with an inverted tornado DDT, Rusev powers out of another DDT and knocks Almas to the floor. Tag to Lana and she runs wild with bulldogs and pulling the hair into takedowns. The neck breaker connects for 2. Lana maintains control and rolls Vega back in, the slam follows for 2. Vega begs off and then slams Lana to the buckles. Vega sets for the corner knees, gets cut off, and Rusev takes out Almas. Almas is back, Lana slaps him and that allows Vega to roll her up with the ropes for the win. Andrade “Cien” Almas defeated Rusev and Lana vs. Zelina Vega @ 7:00 via pin [*¾] This was a match, it wasn’t horrible, but was far from good with Almas & Vega continuing to dominate the feud.

Kickoff Show WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match: Champion Cedric Alexander vs. Drew Gulak: Gulak has some new spiffy tights. They lock up and work to the ropes, and end in a clean break. Gulch looks to ground things, but they end in a stand off. Gulak no starts working body shots, cuts off the head scissors, gets the Gu-lock but Alexander rolls out and hits a dropkick as they brawl to the floor. Back in and Gulak cuts off Alexander and then drags him back to the floor, hitting a neck breaker to start setting up the Gu-lock. Gulak starts working a neck crank, keeping his focus and also keeping Alexander grounded. He follows with a uranage, and follows with a clothesline for 2. Gulak works a Gory special variation, Alexander escapes and they trade strikes. Alexander fires up and hits the slingshot flatliner and both men are down. Back to the feet, Alexander connects with strikes and then ground and pound. He now lays in chops, Gulak powders and is met with a tope from Alexander. Back in and Alexander hits an enziguri but Gulak then trips up the springboard attack and locks on the Gu-lock in the ropes. Alexander tries to fight of the Gu-lock in the ring and hits the back elbow. Gulak now lights him up with slaps, and the sunset flip gets 2. Gulak cuts of the back handspring kick, nut Alexander counters out and hits the Spanish fly and they work into counters and Alexander manages a cradle to retain. Champion Cedric Alexander defeated Drew Gulak @ 10:58 via pin [***¼] This was an overall good back and forth match, with a tremendously fun closing stretch. While not at the level of the high end 205 Live matches, Gulak came in with a good gameplan but Alexander was able to overcome and retain.

Kickoff Show Raw Tag Team Championship Match: Champions The B Team vs. The Revival: Dallas and Dawson to begin. Dallas looks to take control, Dash tags in and they double team Dallas, attacking the knee. They hit shatter machine on Axel and isolate Dallas. The doomsday dropkick gets 2. Dawson continues to attack the knee of Dallas, grounding the action. The Revival continues to work quick tags and double teams as they keep Dallas in their corner. They continue to attack the knee, constantly cutting off Dallas. Dallas manages to post Dawson and gets a cradle for 2. Dash knocks Axel back to the floor, and continue with double teams on Dallas and again, covers for 2. Dallas hits a desperation draping neck breaker and we get wholesale changes to Dawson & Axel. Axel runs wild, hits the Hennig neck snap, and dash cuts off the perfectplex as it breaks down. Dawson had the roll up but in the chaos, but Dash knocks Dallas into the pile and Axel ends up with the win. Champions The B Team defeated The Revival @ 6:08 via pin [**] This was ok, but I’m already over the B Team’s title run.

– The 14 taking heads discuss Roman Reigns, a brief recap:

WWE Intercontinental Championship Match: Champion Dolph Ziggler vs. Seth Rollins: Dean & Drew are at ringside. They play keep away, lockup and Ziggler pulls the hair as they work to the ropes. Dean & Drew argue as Ziggler gets a roll up for 2 and then powders to the floor. Back in, and Rollins hits a hip toss and Ziggler again powders. Rollins follows and lays in rights and then rolls Ziggler in and follows with chops. The clothesline follows. Ziggler counters a suplex, sends Rollins to the apron and then low blows him with the ropes on the way back in and then attacks the knee. Rollins fires back, but Ziggler quickly cuts him off and grounds things. Ziggler then dumps Rollins to the floor. Dean & Drew argue on the floor as Ziggler rolls Rollins back in. Ziggler again grounds things, Rollins fights to his feet, but Ziggler attacks the knee and keeps him grounded. Rollins again fights, but Ziggler keeps him grounded. Rollin again fights to his feet, hits a jawbreaker, and then gets dumped to the floor. Ziggler rolls him back in and heads up top. Rollins catches the high cross and rolls through and suplexes Ziggler over the ropes and they both crash to the floor. They work back in and Rollins hits sling blade. He follows with running forearms, but Ziggler rolls him up for 2. Rollins now hits the blockbuster and that gets 2. Rollins heads up top, but Ziggler crotches him. Ziggler follows him up, Rollins knocks him off and Ziggler rolls away and to the ropes. Rollins dumps him and hits the suicide dive. The springboard clothesline follows and then the ripcord knee gets 2. Rollins looks for a buckle bomb, Ziggler escapes to the ropes, and then gets the sleeper. Rollins rolls and escapes. Ziggler stuns him off the ropes, to the apron and Ziggler posts Rollins and hits an apron DDT. Rollins just beats the count, Ziggler attacks with strikes, and zigzag is countered and Rollins hits a superkick and the high fly flow eats knees and Ziggler cradles him for 2. Ziggler lays in rights; Rollins fires up and they sloppily work to the corner. They work up top, Rollins knocked to the mat, but Rollins pops back up and hits the reverse superplex into an inverted suplex for 2. The crowd finally comes alive 19-minutes in. Drew takes out Dean, distracting Rollins and Ziggler hits zigzag for 2. Rollins is busted open by the eye. Rollins counters the superkick into a cradle for 2. He then transitions into a buckle bomb Dean lays out Drew on the floor, and Rollins hits the superkick and black out for the win. Seth Rollins defeated Champion Dolph Ziggler @ 22:01 via pin [***¼] I think that they were banking on this being their hot opener, and we didn’t exactly get that. It was “fine” most of the way, and started to redeem itself in the closing stretch with the crowd finally caring, and ended up a good match, but they are capable of much better.

– Renee interviews the Bellas. They will always be part of WWE, and hype their outside WWE projects, and won’t confirm an in ring return. They want to see Ronda win the championship and will be ringside for it. Hmmmmm…

Smackdown Tag Team Championship Match: Champions The Bludgeon Brothers vs. The New Day (Big E & Woods): The champions work over Woods to begin, just destroying him and covering for 2. Harper grounds things, Woods fires back but Harper cuts him off and tags in Rowan. The running splash gets 2. Rowan works the cranium crunch, and follows with a back breaker. Harper tags in with a senton atomico for 2. They knock Big E to the floor and work him over. Woods is dumped and Rowan dismantles the steps but h e fights off the killer bomb and slams Harper onto the steps. Woods back in and looks for a tag. Harper cuts him off, Big E fights off Rowan and gets the tag and hits suplexes to the champions on the floor. Back in and the belly to belly and running splash follow on Harper. Harper cuts him off with a Michinoku driver and Rowan tags in but posts himself. It breaks down and Woods hits a tope, but Harper takes him out. Big E hits the suicide spear to the floor. Rowan takes out Big E with an apron high cross. Back in and the crucifix bomb gets 2 as Woods makes the save. He tags in and hits enziguris, gets cut off and the killer bomb gets 2. Rowan takes out Kofi, but Big E hits him with the big ending on the floor. Back in and Harper superkicks Big E and to the apron they go. Big E fights him off and New Day hits the STO/back breaker combo to the floor. Back in and Woods up top, Harper rolls to the floor, and Woods hits the top rope elbow drop to the floor! Big E checks on him, they roll Harper back in and they look for midnight hour but Rowan uses his mallet for the DQ. New Day defeated Champions The Bludgeon Brothers @ 9:30 via DQ [***½] This was a very good and tremendously fun sprint, with New Day taking the fight to the champions like no one else had, causing the champions to take the DQ to retain. I’m not a huge fan of that finish on PPV, but it played into the story well, and sets up a rematch.

Money in the Bank Contract On the Line: MITB Holder Braun Strowman vs. Kevin Owens: If Strowman loses in any way, he loses his MITB opportunity. Strowman attacks and runs wild at the bell. Kevin powders, Strowman follows and tackles him into the barricade. He doe sit again and Kevin flip sells for him this time. Kevin tries to run away, Strowman follows and Kevin superkicks him and that just made Strowman angry and he fucking chokeslams him on the ramp. JESUS! Back in and Strowman powerslams Kevin for the win. Braun Strowman defeated Kevin Owens @ 1:55 via murder death kill [NR] This was an absolute destruction from Braun, with Owens bumping like a madman for him. Braun needs to be back killing men instead of the shit he’s been doing for weeks, that has been horribly uninteresting. This works if Braun cashes in tonight, but otherwise, poor Kevin.

Smackdown Women’s Championship Match: Champion Carmella vs. Becky Lynch vs. Charlotte: Carmella talks trash and then they brawl. Lynch lays in kicks on Carmella, and follows with leg and elbow drops until Carmella cuts her off but Charlotte returns. Carmella shoves Charlotte into Lynch and they argue. They knock Carmella to the floor, and Lynch rolls up Charlotte for 2. They work into several pin attempts, and Lynch grounds the action and teases the disarmher. Charlotte cuts her off, but Carmella pulls her to the floor and posts her, and then slams Lynch to the steps. Carmella mocks Charlotte, and then rolls Lynch back in and covers or 2. Carmella grounds the action, Lynch fights out but Carmella hits a clothesline. Charlotte in and gets cut off and Carmella covers for 2. Carmella grounds the action, and dumps Charlotte but Lynch rolls her up for 2. Carmella hits the dropkick and continues her yelling. The trade roll ups, Charlotte looks to kick Carmella and then “kicks” Lynch by accident, missing by a mile. Charlotte follows with suplexes on Carmella, kips up but Carmella fights off the figure four, knee strike to Charlotte, and then sorta hits a missile dropkick to both, but they were way too far apart. Lynch runs wild, working over Carmella and hits an XPLODER. Back up top and Carmella crotches her and hits ahead scissors for 2. Charlotte back and spears both and then covers both for 2. Lynch rolls to the floor, and Carmella sets Charlotte up top. Charlotte fights off the head scissors and sloppily drops into a crab. Carmella rolls, but Charlotte get the figure four but Lynch breaks it up with a top rope leg drop for 2. Lynch lays in strikes on Carmella, but gets tossed to the floor. Carmella follows with a suicide dive. Charlotte up top and splits the uprights on the sky twister press, pretty much missing both. Back in and Lynch counters natural selection into disarmher, but Carmella makes the save. Carmella tossed, Lynch hits a uranage for 2 as Carmella makes the save. Carmella rolls up Lynch with the ropes for 2. The superkick follows for 2. Carmella dumps Charlotte, superkicks Lynch but Lynch gets disarm her. Carmella makes the ropes so Lynch hits a suplex and back to disarmher. Charlotte then steals the win with natural selection on Lynch. Charlotte defeated Champion Carmella and Becky Lynch @ 14:40 via pin [**½] This had a good layout and some nice drama down the stretch. Unfortunately, there were a lot of sloppy spots and badly timed spots. It was a solid match. Charlotte in particular felt very off, while Carmella worked hard and put in one of her better performances. Had the timing been better and overall work been cleaner, this would have been much better. The story of the match worked to set up Becky’s turn as she snapped after rightly feeling robbed by “her friend.”

– Post match, Charlotte and Becky hug and Becky snaps on Charlotte and kicks her ass to a huge pop. She then slams Charlotte to the barricade and tosses her over an announce table. The crowd then chants, “You deserve it” at Charlotte. Fucking hilarious that they thought Charlotte would come off sympathetic here.

WWE Championship Match: Champion AJ Styles vs. Samoa Joe: Joe gives a shout out to Styles’ wife and daughter at ringside. Styles says they are here to see him kick Joe’s ass. They circle as we get a TNA chant. They finally lock up and work to the ropes. Joe shoves Styles as they break. They lock up again, Styles looks to ground things, and takes him down with a side headlock. Not the start I expected considering the tone of the feud. Joe escapes and turns Styles inside out with a shoulder tackle. Styles now works leg kicks, but Joe fires back with jabs and kicks, taking Styles down in the corner. Styles now fires back, laying in chops, they trade and Styles cuts him off with the dropkick out of the international. Styles follows with kicks, they trade again, but Styles takes out Joe’s knee. Joe to the floor and Styles hits a dropkick and the ref backs him off, but Styles t the floor, Joe blocks the knee strike and cuts him off, rolling him back in and covering for 2. Joe takes control, slowly pummeling Styles and then hitting the elbow suicida, sending Styles into the announce table. Back in and Joe grounds things, Styles fires up but Joe levels him with a lariat for 2. Joe again grounds things with a side headlock. Styles fights out, follows with strikes, and they trade. Styles drops Joe and sends him to the floor and follows with a slingshot forearm. Styles rolls Joe back in and Joe drops him with a huge right, knocking Styles back to the floor. Styles cuts off the suicida with an enziguri and back in hits a huge lariat. The sliding forearm follows and then the corner splash. Styles follows with the asai DDT for 2. They work up top, Joe knocks Styles to the mat and flies off with a leg lariat for 2. Joe continues to attack, hits an atomic drop and running boot, the big boy senton follows for 2. Styles tries to fire back, and catches Joe with an ushigoroshi, but Styles comes up grabbing at his knee. He gets to his feet, but is slow to follow. He looks for the clash; Joe fights it off, and avoids the springboard forearm and hits a snap slam for 2. Styles fights off strikes, hits a crucifix and superkick. A rough looking Styles clash follows for 2. They trade strikes, Styles backs off Joe into the corner and lands repeated strikes until Joe fires up and walks into a PELE. Styles looks to follow, charges, but runs into an STJOE. Both struggle to their feet, Styles gets the calf crusher and cranks back on it. Joe repeatedly slams his head to the mat, escapes, and counters into the clutch. Joe traps an arm but Styles just barely makes the ropes. Joe fires up and looks to finish Styles, takes him up top and teases the muscle buster, but instead enziguris Styles to the floor. He then slam him to the steps. Joe gets the mic on the announce table and says he promised Wendy Styles was coming home, but he’s not, and he’ll be her new daddy. Styles snaps and spears Joe off the table and through a barricade and then attacks Joe with chair shots for the DQ. Styles is busted open as he attacks Joe. Samoa Joe defeated Champion AJ Styles @ 22:58 via pin [****] Overall this was a great match, with good heat, some great callbacks to their previous matches, and work highlighting just how much these two know each other. It started slowly, but overall ended up ebbing exactly what it needed to be. I don’t mind the DQ finish but if you were going to do it here, maybe not do it earlier in the show. Joe talking shit on AJ’s wife is a believable angle to make him snap and give him a renewed edge, and a reason for the feud to continue, likely in HIAC, where Joe can become an absolute madman.

– Styles goes to his wife and daughter and apologizes to them as they leave together.

– Elias arrives to perform, but his guitar broke and he left.

– Miz meets with the B Team. He tries to take credit for their success, but they blow him off to go and celebrate. They then say they hope Bryan beats him tonight.

Daniel Bryan vs. The Miz: Miz & Monroe Sky are at ringside. Bryan so wants to punch Miz, he’s been waiting. Miz backs off and into the ropes. They lock up, work to the ropes and Miz cheap shots Bryan and lays into him with strikes. He follows with kicks, and hits the corner dropkick but Bryan cuts him off and finally gets to punch Miz. He lays in kicks, but Miz cuts him off with a shoulder tackle. Bryan quickly fires back with kicks, and more punches. A rough looking bulldog follows for 2. Bryan now lays in jabs, but Miz cuts him off with a knee strike. Miz now looks for a Romero special, and gets it. Bryan powers out and starts kicking the hell out of Miz’s legs. Bryan now gets the Romero special on Miz and into a pinning combo for 2. Bryan follows with kicks, but Miz crotches him on the ropes and follows with a flying clothesline. Miz now grounds the action with a cravat. He follows with knee strikes, keeping Bryan grounded. Bryan again fires up, escapes, and lays in chops until Miz cuts him off with a neck breaker for 2. Miz now punches Bryan in the face while talking trash. This fires Bryan up, he’s back to his feet and Miz continue to lay in strikes. Bryan finally cuts him off and he lays in strikes, and hits the running clothesline. The corner dropkicks follow from Bryan, and then lays in kicks in the corner. He takes Miz up top and hits the RANA for 2. More kicks by Bryan connect, and he dumps Miz to the floor. The dropkick follows and Bryan heads up top and flies off with a high cross onto Miz and follows with rights. Back in and Bryan heads up top and Miz crotches him. Miz follows him up, lays in strikes, but Bryan slips out and crotches him and puts Miz in the tree of WHOA and peppers him with kicks. The dropkick follows and he then sets him up top, follows, and hits the super belly to back superplex and both men are down; Bryan finally rolls over and covers for 2. More kicks from Bryan connect, but Miz cuts him off and hits the short DDT for 2. Miz now follows with kicks on Bryan, but Bryan gets pissed and fires up just absorbing the kicks and Miz is afraid now as Bryan lights him up with saps and a dragon screw leg whip. Miz catapult him to the post, countering the Yes lock, and hitting the skull-crushing finale for a good near fall. They struggle to their feet, Miz now charges and runs into a head kick for 2. Miz to the apron, teases a suplex to the floor, but Bryan lands on the apron and lays n kicks until Miz moves and Bryan kicks the post and is down. Back in and Miz locks on the figure four, Bryan fights, the crowd tries to rally him, but Miz keeps the hold. Bryan lays in strikes and turns the hold. Miz makes the ropes and they struggle to their feet and trade strikes. Bryan gets a cradle for 2. They both tease skull crushing finales, but Bryan now lays in elbow strikes just punishing Miz. The yes lock follows, Miz fights, bites Bryan, and barely makes the ropes. Miz rolls to the floor and Bryan hits the knee strike from the apron. Maryse hands Miz something as Bryan dropkicks him. Back in and Bryan goes for the suicide dive, but Miz hits him with the gimmick, gives it back to Maryse, and pins Bryan. The Miz defeated Daniel Bryan @ 23:30 via pin [****] This was another great match, that played extremely well into the story and Miz winning makes sense since it’s the first match and he cheated and fucked Bryan over to do so, basically proving Bryan’s point that he’s soft and needs shortcuts to win. It also plays into Miz’s theory that Bryan’s style costs him more than it helps him. This was a great match with great work and really great storytelling. It was what it needed to be in the first match of the feud, but I was surprised that the crowd wasn’t more heated for it.

Finn Balor vs. Baron Corbin: Bartender Baron Corbin is such a bad ass that Finn had to bring back the demon. I thought that they were saving this for “big matches.” Balor hits John Woooooo and a sling blade. He dumps Corbin and follows with a tope. Sling blade on the floor follows and then another John Wooooooo. Back in and Balor hits an enziguri and double stomp. John Wooooo again. Balor up top and the double stomp finishes it. Finn Balor defeated Baron Corbin @ 1:30 via pin [NR] Exactly what it needed to be, fuck off Constable. Now please give Balor something good to do going forward.

– Brie checks on Bryan backstage and they rant about Miz & Maryse. Bryan says he proved Miz right by losing tonight. Brie says Bryan can overcome and that he made his dreams come true.

WWE United States Championship Match: Champion Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Jeff Hardy: Nakamura plays some mind games to begin, looking to frustrate Jeff. Nakamura then lays in knee strikes, but now Jeff convulses and he plays mind games. He then slams Nakamura to all four corners, but Nakamura cuts him off with knee strikes and grounds the action. Jeff battles back with rights, and Nakamura powders and as Jeff follows, cuts him off with a head kick and hits a running knee strike and then another knee strike as Jeff lays on the apron. Back in and Nakamura covers for 2. Nakamura grounds things working on Jeff’s surgically repaired shoulder. Jeff fights back with elbows, kicks, and then hits a sling blade. The running forearm follows, and then the leg drop to the balls and dropkick connect for 2. Nakamura cuts him off with a spin kick, looks for the reverse XPLODER, Jeff escapes and hits a corner clothesline. Jeff then avoids the knee strike and hits whisper in the wind for 2. Jeff back up top and Nakamura cuts him off with knee strikes and the sliding knee (I guess) for 2, it didn’t look good. Nakamura looks for Kinshasa, gets cut off but Jeff avoids the low blow and dropkicks Nakamura. The twist of fate follows, and Jeff heads up top and hits the swanton. The cover gets 2 as Nakamura makes the ropes. Jeff hits another twist of fate, back up top, and Nakamura rolls to the apron and Jeff kills himself as Nakamura moves and he swanton the apron. Back in and Nakamura hits Kinshasa to retain. Champion Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Jeff Hardy @ 10:52 via pin [**½] This was a perfectly fine match that absolutely no one cared about this deep into the show, they didn’t even pop for Jeff’s trademark stuff.

– Randy Orton now arrives and makes his way to the ring… but turns around and walks away. Ok then.

Raw Women’s Championship Match: Champion Alexa Bliss vs. Ronda Rousey: Natalya is out with Rousey, wearing her father’s 1990 Summerslam jacket. RIP Jim. Bliss is out by herself and the Bellas are at ringside. Rousey is all business, looking pissed, likely about her eye makeup. Rousey is sporting new gear on major show new gear night. I hope Bliss does her fake dislocated elbow spot tonight. Bliss runs early until Rousey connects with a right and sends her to the floor. Bliss with some Larry Z level stalling here as Rousey sits down, allowing Bliss to attack. She locks on a sleeper and Rousey stands up and powers out and hits her spinning slam and Bliss spills to the floor. Back in and Bliss connects with strikes, Rousey is pissed and slam her down again and lays into her with strikes. Rousey monologues as she rag dolls Bliss. Rousey attacks the arm and Bliss does her wacky dislocation spot to sell it. The am bar follows and Bliss taps. Ronda Rousey defeated Champion Alexa Bliss @ 4:42 via submission [***] This was good stuff, a complete domination from Rousey (exactly what it needed to be) and she had the crowd in the palm of her hands the entire time; great presence. Bliss got what was coming to her and they didn’t over think the post match.

– Post match, Natalya and Rousey celebrate. The Bellas join them. Rousey then celebrates with her husband.

WWE Universal Championship Match: Champion Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns: Heyman is out with Lesnar. BRAUN ARRIVES and says he’ll cash in post match on the winner. The bell rings and reigns runs wild with superman punches and spears until Lesnar catches him and locks on a guillotine. Reigns fights to his feet and hits a spinebuster, and both are down. Lesnar locks on another guillotine. Reigns fights out again and breaks the hold. Lesnar drops the gloves and hits Germans to you both suck chants. Reigns counters an F5 and looks for a suicide dive and accidentally takes out Braun. Lesnar now F5s Braun on the floor. Lesnar tosses Reigns back in, and then beats on Braun with the briefcase and tosses it up the ramp. He follows with chair shots. Back in and Reigns hits the spear for the win. Roman Reigns defeated Champion Brock Lesnar @ 6:20 via pin [**½] Well, Roman Reigns won and got the title off of Brock. They were smart, kept it short and all action, but the win felt very flat and not like Reigns won, it was more about Lesnar being so busy with Braun that Reigns lucked into it. WWE used Braun to deflect the negative reactions and teased giving the fans what they wanted only to take that away, which is classic WWE booking. It was fine, Roman Reigns is champion, thankfully this feud (I hope) is over.

– End Scene.

– Thanks for reading.

The 411
Overall, WWE Summerslam 2018 was a pretty good show, with a couple of great matches, some good, and some squashes with the right people winning, but also some disappointing performances. The DQ finishes they did worked (setting up rematches), but I think if you’re going to do one in the WWE Title match that you shouldn’t do one in the undercard tag title match. There are also some pacing issues with these “major shows,” little things that just aren’t needed, like the Elias performance tease and Orton teasing coming to the ring on top of just way too many video packages that do nothing but add time to the show. WWE Summerslam 2018 was far from a bad show, but I feel that it had the potential to be much more.
