On the latest episode of Something to Wrestle, JBL reflected on the NWO’s takeover of WCW programming, 30 years on from the faction’s debut JBL weighed in on how, as a WWE wrestler at the time, he watched them dominate the Monday Night War. You can check out his comments below:
On the NWO’s Genius Rollout:
“They call it lightning in a bottle. It was unbelievable. Here’s guys walking into a show — now, some guys had done that before in some territories. Running a show, going into business for themselves. People were wondering if this was WWE invading. They had to put out a disclaimer and say, ‘Hey, it wasn’t WWE invading.’
“It really caught the world by storm, and the things they were doing were absolutely perfect. What an incredible start. They took over. They sparked everything — the whole Attitude Era was sparked from that moment. It was really smart planning they had. Not only what they did and how they started it, but what they did to follow up with it.”
On Watching It As the Competition:
“They did a phenomenal job. Everything they did was hitting on all cylinders — one thing after another. It was brilliant what they did. Talk about the NWO — man, everything they were doing was killing us. We’d just sit there and watch and go, ‘Oh my God, they just did something better.’ Then you think, ‘Okay, maybe we got a chance here.’ Then they do something else, and it’s like, ‘Oh my God, we got no chance. They’re killing us.'”
On the Rey Mysterio Lawn-Dart Spot W Kevin Nash:
“Rey Mysterio gets that lawn-darted into the truck, and 30 years later, I see him in a two- or three-segment match on television, still working. What an amazing story Rey Mysterio has.”
