John Cena Explains Statement About Potential Return From Retirement

John Cena says his decision to stay retired isn’t just about age or injuries. It’s also about keeping a promise he made to WWE fans.
When he announced his retirement last December, Cena pointed to health concerns and the reality of getting older as major factors. He has previously said he doesn’t want to continue wrestling if he can’t consistently perform at the level fans expect. However, Cena revealed that his commitment to the fans is just as important.
During a recent appearance at SpaceCon San Antonio, Cena was asked whether he could ever be convinced to return to the ring after retirement. While he answered with a joke, his overall message was clear: he still plans to stay retired.
Cena joked that the only person who could potentially change his mind would be Elon Musk, and even then it would take a substantial amount of money. After the laugh, though, Cena explained that there are deeper reasons behind his decision.
According to Cena, many fans bought “Last Time Is Now” merchandise and attended farewell tour appearances because they believed they were witnessing the final chapter of his WWE career. He said those purchases were made with the understanding that his retirement was real. Because of that, Cena feels a responsibility to stand by what he told fans (via Wrestling Inc).
“I think the only person that can convince me to come back given the recent events would be Mr. Elon Musk and he’d have to give up a whole lot of his fortune to do so. So, until he does that, I think I’m going to stay retired … The reason or one of the reasons I want to stay retired is far beyond my personal health. I see a lot of Last Time Is Now shirts, Last Time is Now Championships … they bought those t-shirts with the understanding that would be the last time,” he explained. “I told everybody that this last year would be my last year, and I meant it … currency is my word. So that’s a lot of the reason I want to stay retired too because I gave everybody in here my word.”
During his farewell run, he noted that returning after promoting a retirement tour could feel unfair to fans who supported it believing they were seeing his final matches. Cena’s retirement has remained one of the biggest talking points in wrestling since it was announced. As one of WWE’s most accomplished stars, speculation about a comeback has followed him almost everywhere.
For now, though, Cena appears firm in his stance.
