Kevin Nash On Why He Booked Rey Mysterio To Lose His Mask In WCW

Kevin Nash believes it was his decision to have Rey Mysterio be unmasked during his WCW run. Mysterio lost his mask in a Hair vs. Mask match when he and Konnan lost to Nash and Scott Hall at WCW SuperBrawl IX in February of 1999. The mask loss would lead to his becoming part of the Filthy Animals stable, and he remained without a mask until he signed with WWE in 2002.
Nash reflected on the moment in a recent episode of Kliq This. He recalled making the decision and explained why he did so at the time. You can see highlights below, per Wrestling Inc:
On Mysterio Losing His Mask:
“I think I f**king booked that. WCW was doing a huge ad campaign. … The ad people had seen Rey without his hood on, and they wanted to — you’re not going to be in Times Square with a luchador mask on, on an ad.”
On Not Thinking Mysterio Would Be Hurt By the Matter:
“To me, the mask doesn’t make Rey Mysterio, the mask makes Rey Mysterio money, because he can sell a new one every f**king day… So, I looked at it at the time as: let me get this handsome motherf**ker’s face out there, and I mean, I was the first guy of size that f**king — he beat me right in the middle of the ring.”
