Cody Rhodes wrestling Seth Rollins in a Hell in a Cell match in 2022, despite a torn pectoral muscle, is one of the most chilling sights in recent times. The American Nightmare showcased his resilience that night to not only beat The Visionary but also to earn the respect of one and all.
During a recent appearance on Games with Names, Seth Rollins detailed the lead-up to his brutal Hell in a Cell match, right from the moment Cody tore his pec to the conversation they had on the eve of the bout.
Seth revealed that Cody tore his pectoral muscle while bench pressing in the gym a few days before their scheduled bout. On Saturday, Seth and Cody were slated to have a match at a live event. However, the management understandably didn’t want to take a risk, and hence the match didn’t happen. Regardless, The American Nightmare showed up at the event, and that was when Seth saw his torn pec. Rollins was understandably taken aback and was convinced that the Hell in a Cell match was off the table, but Rhodes was adamant that he could pull it off, which he did.
“We do WrestleMania; a month later, we have a show called Backlash. He beats me again, and then we’re gonna finish this story in Hell in a Cell. I’m gonna get my big win finally because he has beaten me two times in a row. The week before this, he is in the gym bench pressing. Pop. Gone. Gone immediately. They send the doctor, ‘Oh, yeah, that pec is gone.’ He knew it right away. They’re like, ‘Well, do we get surgery right away? Can you still wrestle?’ is what he wanted to know. ‘Can I still wrestle?’ I mean, the pec’s gone. You’re not gonna hurt it any worse, but you can’t do anything with it.
“This happened on, like, a Tuesday. We had non-televised events on Friday and Saturday that week. He showed up at these live events, and he was there, and we were supposed to have a match on this live event. Obviously, they didn’t want to take any chances, so he wasn’t wrestling on that, but he showed up, and he showed it to me, and it looked like that (points to Cody’s picture from Hell in a Cell). And I was like, ‘What the f**k are you talking about, dude? You cannot wrestle like that.’ He’s like, ‘Yeah!’ I’m like, ‘What? How are we supposed to have a match? You can’t do anything. You’re in a copious amount of pain.’ Hell in a Cell match, which is one of the most violent matches in our industry, and, like, how are we gonna… ‘Oh, dude, this s**ks!’ So that was kinda a lead-up to it.”
