Yota Tsuji made headlines when he said he took issue with the AEW & NJPW relationship, and Shota Umino has now weighed in. As noted, Tsuji was critical of the relationship between the two, specifically how it relates to Forbidden Door, and said that the PPV has not historically met the standard for what he feels a proper title match would be.

Umino, the current IWGP Global Heavyweight Champion, is set to compete at the show where he will defend his title against PAC. He recently spoke with Tokyo Sports and was asked about his thoughts on Tsuji’s comments.

“I understand his feelings, so I hope he sticks to his guns,” Umino said of Tsuji. “The concept behind the belt is important, and given how the IWGP has been treated in AEW so far, I think it’s been looked down upon. I believe it’s time to correct that course.”

He continued, “I think the concept of the IWGP was that, as champion, I would ‘accept any challenge.’ However, given that there are now other belts bearing the IWGP name, I believe that ‘accepting any challenge’ overseas is my job as the GLOBAL champion who transcends borders.
There’s a risk that the title could be taken overseas if I lose, but I want New Japan Pro-Wrestling to prove to the world that the IWGP GLOBAL Championship is the greatest—and I’m willing to take on that responsibility.”

AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door takes place on June 28th from San Jose, California at the SAP Center and airs live on PPV.
