More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”
Neill revealed in March 2023 that he was diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma in 2022. The actor has spoken openly about his illness and diagnosis in the past.
Sam Neill Led an Impressive Career Across Film & TV
His first major film role was as the Antichrist, Damien, in the 1981 sequel, The Omen: The Final Conflict. He also appeared in the psychological thriller Dead Calm opposite Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane in 1989. He also portrayed a Russian officer in the 1990 spy thriller, The Hunt for Red October, directed by John McTiernan.
In 1993, Neill worked for Oscar winner Steven Spielberg in the iconic Jurassic Park, portraying the paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant. Neill would return to the role twice more for the blockbuster franchise, first with Jurassic Park III in 2001, and once more with Jurassic World Dominion in 2022. The movie featured Neill reuniting with fellow veteran cast members from the original, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum.
In 1993, Neill also starred in The Piano in 1993 for director Jane Campion, portraying the frontiersman Alisdair Stewart. Neill has appeared in many prolific films and worked with many big-name directors over the years, including the Lovecraftian-esque In the Mouth of Madness for John Carpenter in 1994, the sci-fi-horror mashup Event Horizon for Paul W.S. Anderson in 1997, The Horse Whisperer for Robert Redford in 1998, Bicentennial Man for Chris Columbus in 1999, and Hunt for the Wilderpeople for Taika Waititi in 2016. He also had a cameo as the Asgardian stage actor who portrayed Odin in Waititi’s MCU installment, Thor: Ragnarok, in 2017.
Neill has also had various television roles over the years, appearing as the eponymous wizard of Arthurian legend in the Hallmark miniseries Merlin in 1998. He also appeared as Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in The Tudors in 1997 and as Inspector Chester Campbell in BBC’s Peaky Blinders from 2013 to 2014. He also starred in the Peacock mystery miniseries, Apples Never Fall, opposite Annette Bening in 2024.
Steven Spielberg issued the following statement to The Hollywood Reporter on Neill’s passing earlier today:
“I owe a debt of gratitude to Roger Donaldson, Gilliam Armstrong, Graham Baker and Phillip Noyce for casting Sam Neill in the roles in which he was so brilliant that brought him to my attention and led to his playing Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park. Sam was exceptionally collaborative. It was a stretch for him to play a character who acted as though children were messy and smelly because this was the opposite of the loving father he was to his children. I adored making all the Jurassic movies with him. Along with Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum, we will always have our Jurassic family, and Sam will never be forgotten by us or his many millions of fans around the world.”
On behalf of 411, we send our condolences to the family, friends, and fans of Sam Neill.
