The Rock says that he was close to making his Broadway debut alongside Kevin Hart in The Odd Couple. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is currently promoting the opening of the Moana live action remake, and he spoke with The Associated Press at the New York premiere of the film. During the conversation he was asked about potentially taking to the stage and said that he would love to do Broadway and was close to doing the Neil Simon classic comedy alongside Hart with Tommy Kail (Moana, Hamilton) set to direct.

Rock noted that the project didn’t happen because of Hart’s busy schedule but that he still wants to do it. You can see highlights below:

On Nearly Doing Broadway:

“I would love to do Broadway… Broadway is a dream. So, we’re here and we have Lin Manuel Miranda, Tommy Kail who’s our director. He also directed Hamilton.

“I’ll share this with you, we were very close. I was doing — we worked for almost three years with Jeffrey Seller, who’s the king of Broadway. And we were going to do The Odd Couple on Broadway, and I was going to make my Broadway debut. We worked very hard at that, myself and Jeffrey, and Tommy Kail was gonna direct.

On Why It Didn’t Happen:

“And my partner in The Odd Couple was going to be none other than Kevin Hart, which would have been great. But his schedule is just too nutty. He’s booked for the next three to five years. And you know, with Broadway, you have to commit, man. You got to commit six months, you gotta commit to a year. And I’m down. I’m still down to do it. It won’t be with Kevin but you know, maybe after this interview, we’ll find out who it’s going to be.”
