Update on Vince McMahon’s Football Trademark Attempts, UFL Trademark Receives Initial Refusal

– As previously reported, Vince McMahon has reportedly been looking into apparently either bringing back the XFL or getting back into the football business, and he’s recently made a number of trademark filings. PWInsider has an update on the situation regarding Vince McMahon and some of those recent trademark filings. According to the latest report, a “UFL” trademark that was filed by VKM Ventures received an initial refusal because it has a potential conflict with another trademark labeled “UFL” [Urban Fitness League] that is also currently in the process of being trademarked.
The UFL trademark for Urban Fitness League was filed in January 2017 for fitness and weightlifting. It’s likely that VKM Ventures’ application for UFL could be suspended until the other UFL trademark is finished processing. That is unless VKM Ventures is able to provide valid arguments why there would not be any conflicts between the trademarks.
Additionally, the refusal notice for the UFL trademark stated that the classification and identification of goods and services need to be amended so that there is a clear understanding of why VKM Ventures is applying for said trademark. VKM Ventures reportedly applied for eight different classes, but the company only provided a processing fee that was enough for just one class.
However, the “United Football League” trademark is said to be moving forward. The report notes that the trademark for that term is moving forward even though there is already an active “United Football League” trademark that was registered and filed in 2010. It was probably filed by the original United Football League. It’s not clear if there will be a conflict yet there or not. There is also not yet any movement on the XFL trademarks for Alpha Entertainment, since there has to be be a three-month waiting period for new trademark applications.
Vince McMahon’s previous iteration of the XFL debuted in 2001 and lasted for one season.
