UWF Power Pro Wrestling (4.25.1987) Review

-Cold open: last week, Chavo Guerrero screws Gary Young out of a win.

-Originally aired April 25, 1987.

-Your host is Jim Ross.

TV TITLE: EDDIE GILBERT (Champion) vs. MIKE REED

-Jim Ross leads off with some funny half-assed turd polishing, as he basically says, “A lot of fans are wondering how Mike Reed can be eligible for a title shot; well, it’s because HEY LOOK OVER THERE!” and he never gives a clear explanation. That’s why Smoky Mountain Wrestling had the right idea. Just straight-up say “the challenger’s name is drawn from a hat” and be done with it.

-Gilbert takes Reed to the mat and goes scientific, but Reed wriggles free. So Eddie just goes to the aggressive route, then finishes with the Hot Shot. Not sure how tiny basketballs can be such an effective offensive move, but Eddie’s perfected it.

“Mad Dog” BUZZ SAWYER (with Dark Journey) vs. BOB BRADLEY

-Sawyer throws Bradley out to the floor and rams him into every solid object he finds out there, and the fans are into it, as he’s doing a more violent version of the Bushwhackers or George “The Animal” Steele, where he’s an untamed crazy man, but actually UNTAMED AND CRAZY.

-Back in the ring, we get an odd moment as Bradley seems to try to do some kind of offensive move but Sawyer won’t allow him, and a powerslam by the Mad Dog finishes. Again, Buzz Sawyer ended up acting like Buzz Sawyer in real life, so this goes nowhere.

-Chavo Guerrero is going to kick the YOU-KNOW-WHAT out of Gary Young.

-We get a commercial for this weekend’s Gun, Knife, Coin, and Jewelry Show. That name tested really well with the unfocus group.

-We recap the drama between the Freebirds and Devastation, Inc.

WILD BILL IRWIN (with Angel Muhammad & General Akbar) vs. THE GLASSMAN

-Irwin makes quick work of Glassman, with a gutwrench and a big boot finishing things.

-We recap a SHOCKING incident in which Iceman King Parsons whipped Savannah Jack. It was supposed to be the start of a big feud but Savannah Jack exited the business before any big payoff happened.

RICK STEINER & STING vs. JEFF RAITZ & KEN MASSEY
-Eddie Gilbert is hanging out on commentary and just enjoys the show as his boys attack the jobbers during the introduction. Big splash off the ropes by Sting ends this one.

CHAVO GUERRERO vs. SUPER NINJA

-Mat wrestling exhibition. Referee gets bumped, and that brings out Gary Young, but Gary bungles his attempted revenge and drops a knee on Super Ninja, and the referee revives and counts three to give Chavo the win.

-Last week, Missy Hyatt and Sunshine make trouble, and Nicola comes to the ring to set up ANOTHER thing for this promotion that’s never going to get paid off.

STEVE COX (with “Dr. Death” Steve Williams) vs. MIKE BOYETTE

-Eddie Gilbert mentions that Williams is “the protege of Cowboy Bill Watts” and there is a WEIRD silence on commentary right after he says it, as if Watts was dead. If I had the attention span to track this, it might be interesting to look into, but that could very well have been the last time that name was ever said in this promotion.

-Boyette gives Cox a knee and goes to the second rope, but the elbow drop misses, and the Russian legsweep finishes.

-Chris Adams hopes that his solo performance in the title match proves that tough times last. Terry Taylor drops his first little hint that he’s turning heel, implying that he would have just forfeited the match if the shoe had been on the other foot.

SAM HOUSTON vs. THE VIKING (with General Akbar)
-The Viking has ditched the leopard-print gear and is now wearing…like…a wool loincloth. Who knew the Berzerker was an improved take on another promotion’s gimmick?

-Dropkick sends Viking out to the floor for a breather. Viking comes to life and slams Houston down. Vader bo…elbow…I guess, gets two. Houston fights back with rights and backdrops Viking. Houston goes for the kill with the bulldog, and for the second straight week, his opponent bungles the move, as Houston winds his arm around Viking’s neck and Viking just stands there, holds Houston, and then leans against the ropes. Houston lets go, spins around, grabs his head a second time, and THIS time he gets the bulldog. And Houston makes it a point to just sit there a few extra seconds and not do anything while Viking has to play dead.

The final score: review Poor
The 411
It was interesting watching this show after already seeing the weeks and months ahead. It was sobering to see all the things that were set up during this hour that just get completely ditched and never mentioned again.
