PRICELESS vs. ‘H: Okay, I’ll admit that I had a very bad feeling about this one. Yes, I did think that ‘H was going to be going over both Cody and Ted…and really, can you blame me? Priceless was out first, after which the Game came down with no apparent adverse effects from the attacks on the knee last week. Which I guess makes sense, considering he didn’t show many adverse effects from it last week either. You know, I just have to say here, I love Vintage Cole’s attempts to mix up his commentary from time to time, it’s painful. He said that ‘H was “picking it up” early on. The entirety of the match at that point was…a headlock. Well, that’s picking it up from nothing I guess…a technically correct but completely useless comment. This was a pretty average-ly booked handicap match—the solo face looks strong against the heels, tries his damnedest and almost pulls it off, but the numbers game is too much and he falls. Don’t get me wrong here, I’m happy to see Legacy finally get one over on the H-Man, and the two guys beating one doesn’t matter so much when it’s someone unbeatable like Hunter, Cena or Big Dave. In fact, the booking alone is what pushes this into the Right. The match itself was far from bad, it was just ordinary and even maybe a bit less. There were too many rest holds and not enough of an original flow to the match. They did give this one a decent amount of time but in this case I think it was too much time as it just made the match drag some. Still, things were far from bad here and I’ll take that. After the match, Hunter flopped to the side of the ring for a mic and decided to play this off jokey. “That didn’t go as planned…” Really, are you sure? I have to give the Game credit here for trying to put Priceless over verbally. He pointed out that he was getting beat by them week in and week out, which almost makes me forget that it’s not exactly true at all. At this point is when things took a dip, as he proceeded to crap on Dave and Flair. We know Dave’s a fragile man Hunter, we don’t need you pointing it out to the crowd. And pulling a Jericho on Flair was just bizarrely out of character. It didn’t kill it really, it just seemed very strange. Anyway, the gist here (and in the segment after) was that he’s bringing Shawn back, and a D-X vs. Priceless feud is something I could handle. Especially if they actually do for Priceless what they did for Miz & Morrison. In the end I thought this would go in puRgatoRy, but I didn’t have as many problems as I thought I would so this stays in the Right, if by a hair.
CHAVO vs. HORNSWAGGLE HENRYSWAGGLE: Okay, this I was less annoyed about. This wasn’t Chavo being made to look like a total goof here; this was Chavo getting one put over on him by Piven and Dr. I Suck. Chavo of course flipped out while the crowd popped for Henry. Obviously, this was a pure comedy squash match that saw Henry just demolish Chavo. Again, I’m okay with this one because it actually does get Henry over a little more than he might otherwise have been and it’s no credibility loss for Chavo to lose to Henry. It certainly wasn’t a good match by any definition but it worked all right. Besides, I have to give it a Right just for this visual:
Yeah, that’s awesome.
JOHN CENA vs. THE MIZ: So, this match had some good stuff going for it. I loved the Piven heel turn, even if Dr. Ken still sucked by being just an annoying prick. Hand-picking the lumberjacks to be Cena-biased was good, and this was a move I didn’t see coming. I should have, but I didn’t. They booked the match well for the most part, and the in-ring portion was decent work from Cena and Miz. Meanwhile, the lumberjacks spent their time beating the piss out of the Champ. This was great specifically because it made us think that Miz had a chance to win. Of course, he didn’t because John Cena can take on the entire heel roster and still win, but I digress. Cena got the win and this sends Miz off to another show; everyone’s saying SmackDown, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him on ECW. Either way, he’s in a better shape than he was on Raw. Besides this, we got to see Cena toss Ken out of the ring like he should have done in the opening segment; the moment wasn’t worth suffering through Ken the whole show, but ah well.
MICKIE JAMES & GAIL KIM vs. BETH PHOENIX & JILLIAN HALL: Welcome back to Raw, Jillian…thank you for not singing. I find it ironic that Brooke Hogan is supposedly being wooed back by Vince when they still use Jillian as a singer, at least by the way King & Vintage were talking about her. After last week’s potential Gail/Mickie/Beth feud beginning, there was unfortunately no follow-up this time around. Gail and Mickie were all buddy-buddy and it was never once brought up. As for in-ring, this wasn’t terrible for a Divas match. Jillian wasn’t great, but she was better than she’s traditionally been so perhaps she’s been working on her in-ring skills. Meanwhile, Mickie played a good face-in-peril before making the hot tag to Gail, who did a decent job coming in and cleaning house. The missile front dropkick looked kind of bad—on target, just not as a wise move. The match ended abruptly though with Beth getting the pin, which makes me well think they are in fact going back to Beth/Mickie like I suspected last week. We’ll see, though.
CARLITO vs. PRIMO: Was it too early for this match and not enough hype? That depends entirely on how you view the match. I tend to think this isn’t the feud-ender, but then again that’s probably just my optimist coming out. Carlito was playing this super-serious on the way to the ring, his head bowed and his expression actually a damn good one. Primo, for his part, was all sorts of ready to get into it…where Carlito was sullen, Primo was pissed. I do think—surprise surprise—that this match went way too short, lasting only a little over three minutes. But what they had was good, and Primo had his definitely moments to shine. The main problem was that the crowd wasn’t very into this one. Bless their hearts for the three people or so trying to get a “Primo” chant going, but otherwise it was pretty dead. Carlito got the Backstabber more or less out of nowhere for the win, and I don’t think this one is over. But we’ll see.
KOFI KINGSTON vs. BIG SHOW: During Show’s entrance, we saw them continue to try to push some Shaq/Show feud down our throats. SO not interested. We saw this match before and this time around it was better than the first try. The style mismatch still seemed a little awkward but they booked it well with Show being dominating while Kofi kept trying to fight back. Huge points for Jericho pointing out the fact that he was the #1 trending topic on Twitter; I just dug that for some reason. There was no question about who the top man here was, and despite a Kofi comeback this ended with Show in control. I do have to question the ref DQ decision. First of all, why do it? Obviously they didn’t want the US Title on Show, but there were other ways they could have done it. Second, what was he DQ’d for? I think it was not breaking the five-count, but they didn’t make it particularly clear. I just kind of disliked the ending; that being said, the match was pretty decent and I can handle it despite the iffy booking.
EVAN BOURNE vs. JACK SWAGGER: This was a rematch from their match last week, where Bourne shocked Swagger by beating him in the Beat the Clock Challenge yet did not get to have a shot at the WWE Title. That match made the Right despite some strange booking because we had a pretty good match there. This time around, they had even less time than before and weren’t nearly as good against each other. They gave Bourne some offense during the two minute-plus proceedings but mostly this was about making Swagger look good and get his win back. You know, that’s all well and good, but do we really need to have Lawler mention how Evan’s win may have just been a fluke and then have Swagger beat Bourne decisively? It sorta craps on Bourne. After the match Swagger continued the beat down to do Swagger more damage before MVP made the save. Well, I was hoping that the Swagger/MVP feud hadn’t ended as quickly as it seemed to, so there’s that at least.
PIVEN AND KEN’S BACKSTAGE CRAP: So, the opening segment was problematic. What happened in the backstage area showed that Ken wasn’t going to get any better throughout the night. Piven managed to pick it up some from his mistake and even played a few hints of him being the slimy dick, getting Ken riled up against Show as Show came in. Man, if only Show had killed Ken. Show apparently wanted to take on Shaq, which is not a match I want to see. Piven said no, so Show wanted Piven; instead he got Kofi in another Piven slime ball moment. Later on we had the obligatory Chavo segment, where Chavo and Piven were good and Ken was still annoying as hell but he at least got Chavo to toss out a Heroes joke. This whole trend continued throughout Raw, with Ken generally being a fucking idiot at Piven doing all right. I really wish we’d just had Piven…then we’d just have Summerfest to bitch about.
DID YOU KNOW?: Nope. And, as always, I don’t care.
…SUMMERFEST? You know, I wish I could say that “Summerfest” was all that was wrong with the opening segment on Raw. It actually started out pretty well; Piven got a good reaction after being announced by Lillian Garcia, and pulling Dr. Ken out of the trunk of the car was a cute reference to The Hangover and Piven’s upcoming film. Unfortunately it was all downhill from there. Dr. Ken was annoying from the start and Piven was far from on top of his game. Piven is a charismatic individual and really could have done well if he’d actually bothered to do more than roll out of bed and step out onto the stage. Things were kind of iffy at first but they weren’t horrendous. Piven acted like a fan and the pyro thing was great. Then, the Miz—or “Les Miz” to Piven—came out to face off against the duo. At this point, I already wanted to put Ken’s face through a window. The guy is funny, don’t get me wrong, but whoever put the cocaine in his coffee needs to be shot because he was somewhere around 700% of the appropriate energy. The gist here was that Miz wanted Cena and threatened Piven, only to have Cena himself come down. As Dr. Ken danced around him like a Black Eyed Pea on too many pixie sticks, Cena gave the celebrities their props and then trashed the Miz, saying there was no reason to see this match and Miz was a rusted Pinto. The end result was Cena vs. Miz in a lumberjack match and if Miz lost, he was shipped off of Raw. You know, I was hoping that Miz would have a chance on Raw, but the way things have gone in the last few weeks it’s probably for the best. Then the big blooper came out… “Summerfest.” I would like to think this was on purpose to play into later events, but…yeah, no. Cena covered too quickly and Piven’s following suit seemed too “oh hell, my bad.” Hey Vince, what did you think of that?
Yeah, that’s what I thought. This probably would have ended up as a wRong if it was just that, but Ken’s super-obnoxious bullshit was just agonizing, and that drug this thing way down. I really wanted to pretend I’d never seen that crap, but alas.

Raw had been on a roll, and if not for Dr. Ken and some other blunders this wouldn’t have been too much of a step down. I didn’t mind Jeremy Piven at all (other then the obvious FUBAR), he seemed natural and his “turn” worked well. Unfortunately, he brought the most annoying personality in the last few years onto Raw. And considering Vickie Guerrero’s character, that’s saying something. Almost everything else was so-so except for Henryswaggle in a leprechaun hat which was awesome. I’m happy to see Miz move somewhere that beside Raw, where Creative(less) clearly has no idea what to do with him. Very sketchy show this week from the Red Brand. SHOW RATING: 4.5 |
From BKS: You know what else was wrong with the HArdy Promo? He actually said that it’s okay to do drugs and almost throw your career away as long as you’re super over. What kind of fucked up role model is that?
Well, to be fair he didn’t say that…at least, I didn’t catch it. It can certainly be extrapolated from what he said, but I took from it that he was saying that it’s okay to be human and make mistakes. That, I’m okay with. From a certain point of view I can see people taking that from what he said and in that, your point is valid.
From Guest#0228: hey great column. i really summmerslam is starting to look pretty damn good with orton cena who never finished their entertaining feud, the tag titles which after smackdown im looking foward and hopefully a triple threat with morrison, hardy and cm punk. and then theres dx which could either be really good or really bad.
There are things I do like about the SummerSlam card and I think that they can deliver well. Orton and Cena may be good or bad, depending; Punk & Jeff will be amazing again I wager. I’m surpirsed with how well they’re building up Cryme Tyme and I hope that continues. We’ll see how it goes, but for now I’m optimistic.

RVD, Batista , Chris Benoit and Jeff Hardy, for example, all had generic rock music, and when they got over enough they got…LYRICS!! Yes, entrance music that’s basically their generic theme with lyrics, and becomes instantly associated with them.
Very good point, Loki. Lyrics seem to be the official sign that you’ve “made it.”

From Shockmaster: CRYME TYME vs. THE HART DYNASTY/SHAD SPEAKS WOOKIE: Cryme Tyme’s ring work was the best I’ve seen from them, the promo was great. In about 15 minutes I went from lukewarm at best about them to being sold on them deserving a title match at Summerslam. Great stuff by all.
THE EVOLUTION OF A HEEL TURN: “Jeff, Jeff…honestly, the last few weeks…” and then POW! Few things actually make me LOL for several seconds, but that did it. It reminds me of Nikita Koloff telling Lex Luger “I take great pride and pleasure in giving this to you” and blasting him in the head with the US title belt. It was something I didn’t see coming which is always fun. Kudos to Punk for giving no tell with either his body language or the earlier promo.
DOLPH ZIGGLER & MIKE KNOX vs. FINLAY & REY REY: I had no issue with the clashing styles and thought this was a fun match with an old school vibe. They all looked good and Ziggler isn’t hurt by the rollup loss.
MORRISON CONRATULATES JEFF: Morrison was made to walk through a minefield here. He had to cut a promo where he couldn’t say one bad word about Jeff without drawing unwanted heel heat. He could only gently predict victory without upsetting fans. The only safe road would have been “Aw shucks, I’ll just give it my best and hope it’s enough” and that would be completely out of character. He couldn’t win here. John should have cut Jeff’s promo about putting on a great show while Jeff predicted victory, which would have had no danger of drawing boos. The match made Morrison look like a million bucks though.
Complete agreement on Cryme Tyme–I didn’t think that I’d be excited about them in a Tag Title match either, but there you go. I don’t think it was the clashing styles in the tag match that hurt it, it just seemed to be too start-stop I guess. And I absolutely agree that Morrison was in a rough spot. I think his promo would have been better off left alone, and his ring skills should have spoken for himself considering the position he was in.
From Col: Smackdown was fantastic. I’ve been down on wrestling a lot recently due to Impact being torture and Raw being fucking awful aswell, Smackdown and ECW are usually good but my god Morrison vs Hardy was AMAZING. I felt bad for Morrison and that promo though. Was it just me or did it look VERY obvious that he was reading every line from over Josh’s shoulder? Morrison spent the whole interview looking in that spot and fumbling through the lines. I feel for the guy as he’s easily my favourite wrestler with a HUGE future ahead of him, but to be honest it’s hard to take him as a face. The guy can play the perfect heel but using that character as a face would be difficult for anyone in my opinion.
I think that Morrison can play a face well enough, I think they just made a mistake in putting him against someone as over of a face as Jeff. He needs time still to get his character down to the point that he’s got the skills that matches his crowd reaction.
From bighustle I’m not getting the whole, “John Morrison is bad on the mic” sentiment. It’s like someone said it one day and all of sudden people went, “ya know, that John Morrison guy is absolutely HORRID on the mic.” If I may quote the Iron Sheik…”FAAACKIN BULLSHIIIT!!!” Morrison might not be Dusty Rhodes with a live microphone, but he’s good if not better than decent with the mic. And for people to blame a WWE wrestler for having bad mic skills when WWE tells their wrestlers word for word what to say and how to say it…the notion is preposterous.
Well-put on Morrison, Hustle. I do say that mic skills are different than what to say and how to say it; some people can’t deliver now matter how well they understand. But otherwise I’m in complete agreement.

ECW on SyFy 08.04.09
– Ezekiel Jackson killed a jobber via pin at :35 [DUD]
– Sheamus defeats Goldust via pin at 4:40 [**]
– Christian defeats Tommy Dreamer via pin at 16:10 [***1/4]
SHEAMUS VS. GOLDUST – PART 2: So this week we get the rematch between Sheamus and Goldust. On top of everything, one very small thing I liked here. First, Matt Striker putting over Goldust’s veteran know-how and how he was slightly unsure what to expect last week was quite good. It makes Goldust not look like a total jobber and it also puts over the success of the new talent coming in, because these veterans need to plan for something new. The match itself had nothing wrong with it, even if it wasn’t that great. The ending was quite surprising and was definitely something different. Sheamus then grabbed a microphone and did a clever shot on Goldust before going down his normal path. Goldust coming out nowhere to attack Sheamus made this a definite right. Gokdust shouldn’t just lie down to Sheamus and was rightly ticked off. Sheamus bailing I wasn’t thrilled with, but it definitely sets up a third match between the two.
CHRISTIAN AND TOMMY DREAMER GO EXTREME: Our main event was an Extreme Rules Match between Christian and Tommy Dreamer, with the ECW Title on the line. Dreamer had his pre-match promo, saying it was his match and his peeps in the crowd. Sorry Tommy, but this ain’t NYC or Philly. We then see Christian walking backstage with a car door. I would have liked to not seen it before hand, but no problems. Dreamer and Christian each come out with unique weapons, in addition to everything being scattered at ringside. We had our super special announcing, making it feel like a big match, and we were off. Yes, the match did start slow and without plunder, but once it went there, it never turned back. I know some people didn’t like it, but the match was better than many think it was. First off, there were some very unusual spots in this match, including some I don’t think have ever been seen before. Just off the top of my head (and in no order), you had the whole Hot Dog cart spot, Christian getting launched into a wide open trash can, and my personal favorite… the Tree of Woe with a kendo stick slammed into the trash can. I was expecting the drop kick, but the force was just crazy. And of course, let’s not forget the ending with the Killswitch on a freaking car door! I admit, I was a little worried with the limits on the weapon, but it was played out nicely. I especially loved the “drive-by” comment by Striker as Christian ran right into being smacked upside the head. Overall, the match was innovative was such a boring stipulation and delivered the goods from start to finish.
BACKSTAGE ANTICS: So, we only got one real backstage segment this week, with the Hurricane saving another woman and Paul Burchill looking disgusted by the sight. It advances the story and did no harm. Pretty much, this deserved some mention. And, oh, yeah, it allowed me to see twins!
SOMETHING IS MISSING: For the second week in a row, we did not have Yoshi Tatsu compete. This week also had no Tyler Reks, William Regal, and limited Burchill to five seconds backstage. Now, while I have no problems with the last three… Yoshi is fucking over as hell! Not having him for two straight weeks on ECW, when he is the biggest thing that is not in the main event right now, is a huge mistake.
BIG ZEKE AND KOZLOV MURDER A KID: This is getting ugly now. First, Kozlov kills a guy Big Zeke defeats. Then, Big Zeke returns the favor the next week. Now, Kozlov comes out and returns the favor again just to have it thrown in his face with Big Zeke not waiting a week to slam the poor kid and walk off. Now, it has been three weeks and this is begging for an explanation. Still, we don’t have any clue what the hell is going on and I’m thinking it is getting too predictable. When I saw Big Zeke win, I was just counting the seconds until Kozlov came out to unleash hell. So, I expect a payoff next week or else this will become about as boring as something below…
THE ABRAHAM WASHINGTON SHOW: Oh come on, you knew this was coming. And not just because Mr. Washington decided to take just about every cheap shot he could in five seconds on Long Island. No, this is here because this week was just painful to watch. The only bright spot on the whole thing was Zach Ryder (yes, I said it) coming out and pretty much being his cocky self. I wasn’t shocked by the cheers he got, being a local, but he played it off perfectly as to not become the face of the conversation. They took turns then ragging on Shelton Benjamin and how boring he was, which of course brought out the Gold Standard. Now, I couldn’t get this from the vibe of everyone, but was Shelton going face here? I swear I don’t know and Shelton sure didn’t act is here, despite two better heels being out there. Shelton went the “screw the PG secret” route and replaced F-Bombs with “Smurfs” everywhere. Ok, not the best way to prove you aren’t boring. We then went with your normal back and forth jabs before Abraham Washington asks for a singing contest. At this point, I think my table started banging on a table. Zach Ryder picked a song… and forgot the words. I think only one thing sums it up.
So anyway, Shelton then gets the stick and outdoes him… leading to his head getting knocked in with a microphone. Shelton spears him, puts him through the couch, and we are done. This was painful at best and mostly because of the one thing I agree with Mr. Washington on. Shelton Benjamin was pretty boring here. Normally, Shelton can entertain a lot better than this, but I guess having Ryder next to him didn’t help. Plus, Washington just sucks charisma out of people.

The title match was really good and definitely made the show worth watching. Everything else though wasn’t all that good. I just wonder where on earth they go from here if Shelton is too busy singing, Kozlov is too bust killing nobody, and there are no other legit contenders for Christian. I think that is the one question I would hope this show would answer and it totally didn’t. SHOW RATING: 5.5 |
