Wrestling’s 4R’s Tuesday Edition – 10.14.08: iMpact, Smackdown and Bound for Glory IV!
How the 4R’s of wRestling Work!
Here is a quick explanation of the 4R’s. The column will run TWO times a week. On Tuesdays I will discuss TNA Impact and WWE Smackdown. Also, if there is a PPV, that will be covered in this column as well. The column will run again on Friday’s, covering WWE Raw (with Jeremy Thomas) as well as ECW on Sci-Fi. If there is a PPV that weekend, I will also run the RETRO R’s of the show from the year before as well as address some comments when time permits. I will group my feelings on the shows in various categories: The Right, the wRong and the Ridiculous. The Right is stuff that worked very well: a great promo, a great match and so on. PuRgatoRy is a section between the right and wrong. It shows equal traits from both sides that cannot be ignored and need discussed. It is not a bad place per say, as things can get remedied or go the wrong way the very next week. The wRong is what it sounds like: bad matches, bad or boring promos and so on. The Ridiculous is stuff that had no right on TV: Stupid angles, Diva searches and so on. And there is always a possibility of a 5th R, which is as bad as they come, unless you are TNA. They have a special R all of their own, the 6th R; the Russo-FN-Riffic~! This column is supposed to be analytical, and at the right time very critical of the shows, it was the whole reason it was created. This is not a “mark” column, nor a “smark” column, my goal is to analyze the show from many different fronts, reward the good and call out the bad. I will not apologize for my opinions, they are as they are, whether positive or negative.

iMpact! 10.09.08:
Captain Charisma Speaks: I thought that Impact kicked off well this week as they continued the Christian/AJ/Booker saga. Christian explained that he hasn’t picked a side, and that maybe he didn’t have too because he was the champ. Booker would appear and try to talk Cage to his side, because they were from the “same school,” alluding to being old school. Of course AJ would have NONE of this, and he tried to play Christian to his side, explaining that he was allowing Booker to manipulate him. Finally this led to an appearance by Jim Cornette, who made the main event of AJ vs. Booker, with Cage as the referee in order to “solve the problems.” This worked well, didn’t come off as hectic and played off of the angle they have been playing over the last few weeks. Not a great segment, but an overall strong one.
KAREN’S ANGLE: I have to say that for once I completely enjoyed Karen’s Angle. No bullshit, not a lot of talking from Karen, no fake drama and no one attacked or threatened her. This was just an avenue for Foley to speak without someone else busting into his speech, and it worked well. Foley hyped Jarrett, hyped Angle, hyped TNA and hyped the PPV and his role in it. He did what Mick Foley does best in 2008, talk and promote; and that is why this was a good segment. The other thing is that they announced that Karen Angle is stepping away from TNA to spend more time with her kids. That’s a win as far as the fact that we don’t have to endure these segments, which have been more miss than hit; but the bad news is that we don’t get to check out Karen’s bodacious rack every week.
Non-Title Match: Beer Money © w/Miss Jackie vs. Abyss and Matt Morgan: They tried to get some go home heat for the Monsters Ball match here, and they did that with Beer Money facing off with Morgan and Abyss. They not only took the time announce Steve “Mongo” McMichael as the special referee, and had Team 3D do commentary during the match. As far as the match goes, I REALLY enjoyed the match. It was fun, energetic, they got time to work, Morgan sold well, they built to the Monsters Ball and it was just a fun match. LAX closed it off with a post match promo promising pain to Beer Money, and in the end I have no complaints here; good work for all involved.
FOLEY SPEAKS: Mick Foley segment #2 was also a winner in my book this week. He came out, joked, played the crowd and then got to business and he hyped Jarrett, hyped Angle, hyped TNA and hyped the PPV and his role in it. Jarrett and Angle would join him, and they continued the hype well. Jarrett has been great since his return on the mic, and Angle and he are working together. Jarrett made good on his promise to give back the gold medal, they shook hands and it all looked like they were happy. Until Angle said to Jarrett, “go home, go home and tell your three little girls that I apologize…because daddy will not come home after Bound for Glory.”
Raisha Saeed and Awesome Kong vs. Taylor Wilde and Roxxi : Overall this was a very solid, but short tag match. I hope the three ladies get some time on Sunday, because I think they can have a good match. They haven’t done much build for the title match, but this did some repair work towards that, and we finally got the “accident” between Roxxi and Wilde. With Roxxi taking the pin again here, I imagine that she has a good chance to win Sunday, that reverse psychology booking shit that they like to do sometimes. Also, I pray that Saeed becomes a regular performer in the ring soon. With Kim gone they need the talents that she brings to the table. She is completely underutilized. It was fine to begin with, but now is the time to break her out either as Saeed, or kill off that character and bring on Cheerleader Melanie! Oh you know they’ll change the name.
X-Division #1 Contender’s Match: Sonjay Dutt w/Val vs. Consequences Creed vs. Jay Lethal vs. Petey Williams: With the PPV just days away, TNA remembered that they should be presenting an X-Division title match. Good idea! They did that by having a #1 contender’s match between Dutt, Lethal, Creed and Williams. And if I am honest here, I have to say that this was a fun little match right here, with the guys going non-stop. That’s a good thing, but I wish they would invest more time in these “contender’s” matches. I have said this time and time again, these matches do not come off as important, instead they come off as just another match. That’s not the way it should happen. Also we see all of these cool moves and it ends with the backslide? Really? I have no problem with the backslide, seriously I don’t, but after all of the shit they did, it is a completely anticlimactic finish. Anyway that frees up Williams, Dutt, and Lethal for the Steel Asylum. I figure Rave, Sabin, Shelley, Sharky, Devine, Curry Man and Super Eric are all in as well. But we’ll discuss that more later.
Booker T w/Sharmell and the Briefcase vs. AJ Styles With Christian Cage as Special Referee: The beginning of the show was the set up for this “main event” match. Bookends for the most part, and that are good lay out in my opinion. Cornette placing Cage in the middle of the drama to “make him choose” made sense, and adds to the angle that they have built. In the end this was a “fine” match, but I just keep having this feeling that AJ and Booker are capable of so much better. The booking was working towards the three-way for the last few weeks, so the finish all worked well overall. Unfortunately it was just there, and a bit too predictable. That isn’t horrible or anything, and I may be nitpicking, but I guess I wanted more out of this. Also I wish that they could had the match set a bit sooner. The build was all solid, but having Cage, AJ and Booker not set for the “biggest show of the year” until just days before seems like a big error to me.
29:30: I’d like to think we all know the drill by now. TNA is supposed to be the alternative, they try to be different, and they claim to be the wrestling promotion. So I am their conscience, their wrestling stopwatch. Each and every week I keep track of the time of wrestling on the show, and discuss it here. We got some more wrestling this week, unfortunately most of it wasn’t that good or was just there to be a lead in for an angle. Matches can tell a story as well, but they aren’t allowed to on Impact. And please, CUT DOWN ON THE NUMBER OF SEGMENTS! If you extend the matches, you don’t have to run so many damn segments that end up not meaning that much. Streamline baby, streamline… They almost hit 30-minutes, and the added wrestling helped a bit a sit usually does, because we had less stupidity.
MAIN EVENT INTERVIEW: JOE AND STING MAKE THE DEAL: To close the go home show this past week they had the contract signing for the Joe vs. Sting match. Overall I have some mixed feelings, but came away from the segment unimpressed. First of all the last minute addition of a stipulation wasn’t needed. It is again a situation of overbooking and adding too much for no reason, which is a shame, but is also TNA booking unfortunately. To me this was a big error. The play between Joe and Sting also fell flat in my opinion. While I have enjoyed their previous work, I can’t say the same here. Part of me doesn’t mind how it ended. Joe “kept it professional” until the contract was signed, and then in my opinion paid Sting back for his attacks. To say that they didn’t get the crowd reaction they wanted would be an understatement.
No DQ Match: Rhino w/The Beautiful People vs. Cute Kip : I will keep this short, like the match. It wasn’t horrible, but it wasn’t great. It was a very generic “no DQ” match that served as set up for a PPV match that no one wants to see. I think that they would have been better served to leave this off of the PPV, and focus their energies on the other matches. They needed the build time as well as the match time more I feel.
POOR BOUND FOR GLORY BUILD: I have to say that when this show ended, I realized that the build to this year’s “biggest PPV of the year,” especially when compared to last year’s event was poor to say the least. Last year they had the card laid out on the first Impact and then used the weeks to build it all. While they didn’t have to do it that way exactly, it would have been nice to have more matches set for the big show. Here are some examples of that.
SHOW RATING: (***) Overall this wasn’t a bad show. There was a lot of stuff to like and some damn good wrestling, not great, but fun matches overall. As a standalone show it would likely get a higher rating, but as the go home show for “the biggest PPV of the year,” it falls short in my opinion.

WWE SmackDown 10.10.08
BRIE vs. NATTIE: The opening match on Smackdown was Brie Bella vs. Natalya. Victoria was with Brie, and you knew she was up to no good. Overall a short, but energetic match between the two ladies. The Bella twins seem to be a good athletes and are learning a lot working with Nattie and Victoria, which is why I like the program; if they want them to be able to do anything for the division, they need to learn all they can and Victoria and Nattie will do that. Sure I hate to see Victoria and Nattie as such after thoughts, but I hope that it is going somewhere. After a trip under the ring and Hornswoggle chasing Victoria away, Bella got the win after the obvious switch. I am willing to let it play out a bit more before I am sick of it. I like that there are “timing” problems, and that we now KNOW something is up, JR and Tazz KNOW something is up and while they had the idea that something was up, Nattie and Victoria now KNOW that there is something afoot. The question is, will they be able to put it together, and will the pay off actually be worth it? I’ll wait to see.
R-TRUTH vs. THE GOLD STANDARD: The match was a bit shorter than I had hoped for, but I thought that we had a good match between Shelton Benjamin and R-Truth. It was basic and clean, working counters and seeing of one man could one up the other. R-Truth got one more reversal than Benjamin and took home the win, which came off well. It was that reversal out of nowhere, and when he got the win Benjamin had this look of complete disbelief on his face. Benjamin has continually said that R-Truth was NOT on his level, that he was a criminal, a street urchin. Benjamin has been so egotistical with all of his Gold Standard Rhetoric that he has completely overlooked R-Truth, and now has lost to him again. I like the feud thus far, and I hope to see some attitude next week from Benjamin, since he just got shown up yet again.
HHH vs. BIG SHOW: While this match too a beating all week from the comment section, I think that we got a solid match from HHH and Big Show. These are two guys that have been able to work together, and pretty well for almost a decade. I thought that their match, while not great, was solid stuff and smartly laid out to allow both guys to look good, since they were obviously heading for the non-finish. Show wasn’t done with Taker, and HHH wasn’t done with Jeff and Big Bad Vlad. So we got our obvious run-ins, some Taker Voodoo and the non-finish. I am not a big fan of the non-finish. If they happened not as often as they do it would be fine, but it just turned me off. Some will call it nitpicking, but personal preference dose come into the opinion I eventually form. I did like Jeff standing tall to set up his match next week with Vlad, so overall I will go with the right, because they are headed into the right direction I feel, and that is getting things set up for next week and the PPV.
OPENING SEGMENT: While the opening segment did its job, which was to set the main event, I felt it fell flat. I am not a fan of Vickie being back so soon. As I stated before, it makes the attack by the Undertaker a “been there and done that” angle, as this is exactly how it happened before. Taker tombstone, Vickie injury wheelchair and almost no time away to sell the injury. That is mainly why I disliked it. Show was good here, explaining that he told us so in regards to not only destroying Taker, but that he was the equalizer and that the relationship between he and Vickie was going to take him to the title. Good work by Show, good set up but the stuff with Vickie bothers me.
HARDY vs. MVP: I hate to say it, but I did not enjoy this match. I have said before that these two don’t have the chemistry that most think they do. They have had some “good” matches, but never anything felt up to their ability. So we got another match with these guys, it was a match and it really felt as if they were going through the motions out there. No play off of their previous bouts, just go out there, do some stuff and that’s all. I think that it is obvious that they are capable of so much more, unfortunately we didn’t get that here. Some have been complaining about MVP jobbing, and while I agree with it to a point, they have now given a possible explanation for it. JR explained that there was an incentive bonus deal for MVP, and when he got his next win he would cash in. It makes sense, in sports terms he is in his “contract year,” and is looking for that home run, touchdown, last yard to get him the bonus; and likely the ability to negotiate a better deal. Which would also play into why he didn’t have a PPV match. If he has an incentive bonus deal for reaching his next win, he is likely loaded to deliver more of a bonus for the PPV victory, which is why he was kept off of the show.
Oh that wacky Khali…: Playing off of the events of Monday Night Raw, Khali was back! They showed a replay of the events from Raw, and then hyped Knoxville appearing on Raw. Khali was set to destroy three men, and in a moment of awesome hilarity they all charged him and when Khali roared, they stopped. The two with brains bailed, allowing the third to eat the KHALI CHOP and get pined. Ranjin is sporting a spectacular set of side burns these days, I will say. They then closed up with the Khali kiss cam, with about the homeliest woman you could imagine. It was odd and wacky; some people hate it, some people love it. I am very in the middle. We have discussed this before, but I think we all knew that the day would come when Khali’s effectiveness as a heel challenger would come to an end. They have done about everything they can with him, and with his knees being an issue, you can’t count on him physically. My best guess is that, in a way, they are going to go the George “The Animal” Steele route and have Khali become the lovable/wacky/monster face. It’s a direction I figured that they would eventually go, and it could be worse.
Jesse, Festus, Carlito and Primo vs. Ryder, Hawkins, Braddock and Dykstra: I will admit to liking the idea of the match. You have the tag champs, the former tag champs and the other tag team on the brand all involved. Jesse and Festus did the moving gimmick to Kenny and Braddock, so they want revenge. So while the booking made complete sense, I was not thrilled with the match we received. You have EIGHT guys in there and you only give them FOUR minutes? REALLY? SRLY? I mean, come on, that’s a typical TNA move there. Here’s the match, they did some stuff for a bit over 2-minutes, they tagged in Festus, he ran wild, shit broke down, and then Festus, who is smitten with Maria, pinned Kenny the Jobber. There you go; I just saved you four minutes of your life, you’re welcome.
R-Truth: Minus 1,000,000 Cool Points…: If the writing crew was looking for a way to make R-Truth look cool and get over even more, they failed big time here on Smackdown. They had he and Funaki talking, and joking around. Talk turned to R-Truth asking what Funaki’s real name was, and after the long way around we ended u with KUNG FU NAKI. It was then that R-Truth decided to “be funny” and parody Kung Fu Fighting: “Everybody loves Kung Fu Naki… Even when he drinks his sake… And he rides a Kawasaki… And he likes watching hockey… His body’s short and stocky, because his name is Kung Fu Naki.” R-Truth, you now owe us cool points since you were fined 1,000,000 Cool Points for that horrible segment. If this was the company’s bright idea to get R-Truth over, then they have failed. He has been hit or miss with live crowds thus far, and segments like this with the funny Japanese guy that’s been with the company for 37-years aren’t going to help him get over.
SHOW RATING: (**¾) Smackdown was not a bad show this week, when I got done watching the show I thought, “well, that was an ok show.” Nothing was horrible, nothing was great; it was just a fine wrestling show that started the build to the next PPV.
~TNA BOUND FOR GLORY IV~
By: Larry Csonka
The Matches:
STEEL ASYLUM MATCH: While the build to this match was very poor, because we had no clue who was in it or what it was for, I had high hopes for the match. As most guessed it featured Jay Lethal, Sharky, Super Eric, Curry Man, Sonjay Dutt, Chris Sabin, Alex Shelley, Petey Williams, Johnny Devine, and Jimmy Rave; they were battling for the #1 contender’s spot as well, thanks for letting us know. With all of that being said, the stars of the X-Division kicked off Bound for Glory and they did so in spectacular fashion. This was a wild match that played to the match style well as they delivered crazy spots and I felt that everyone got to look good. The finish featured Lethal and Dutt battling in a continuation of their angle, but this time Jay prevailed and walked away with an X-Division title shot. This was a great way to kick off the show and was a ton of fun overall. There are rumors coming out of the PPV that Johnny Devine asked for his release. In a related topic, Jimmy Rave asked for Johnny Devine to be released…after he woke up from Devine dropping him on his head. That had to suck. And word just came in that he has been granted his release.
TNA X-DIVISION TITLE MATCH: The theme of the X-Division title match was to play off of the USA vs. Evil Foreigner dynamic. They set this up with a pre-match promo by Creed, as well as TNA bringing out a Chicago Native that was injured in service of the US Army to announce Creed. I felt that this worked as the crowd was into it with the USA vs. Evil Foreigner dynamic, which is a good thing. Thankfully TNA didn’t “Cross the Line” into bad taste and do anything involving the soldier, which Lansdell and I feared over IM. Creed stated out like a bat out of hell as he went on the attack and from there the crowd was locked into the match. Overall this was good match, but a bit below the expectations I had for these two, partly due to the sloppy finish and partly because I felt as if they needed a few more minutes to really reel it in. Give the guys time to work TNA; this is another reason I felt the mixed tag didn’t need to be on the show, because it took time from matches like this one.
TNA TAG TEAM TITLE MONSTERS BALL MATCH: Besides the Steel Asylum, we had more craziness on the card as the Monsters Ball made its yearly appearance for TNA. While they have overdone many of their gimmick matches, Monsters Ball is one that they have kept for this show and this year they changed it up by having the tag titles on the line, and obviously involving tag teams. I have to say that much like the Steel Asylum, this was another really fun match that not only played off of, but also delivered on the stipulation. I will admit that it isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it was fun and Beer Money are as Michael Cole would say, “the ultimate opportunists.” We got big dives, weapon shots, a flaming table, the return of the tacks and in the end I felt that everyone in the match got to look good, which is always a key thing in a match like this. I was ready to blast Mongo, but the football spot was glorious and he saved the match when he opened the bag of tacks for Hernandez. Seriously, that could have been disastrous. Also, Abyss is ONE SICK FUCK. He not only took the table bump, and not only was it a flaming table, but when he rolled off he was STILL on fire and had to be put out. This sick fuck will do anything.
Booker T defeated Christian Cage and AJ Styles: They had a hard match to follow, due to Monsters Ball having all of the toys, blood and big moves. All three guys worked hard, but I think that the problem was that they knew they had to follow the Monsters Ball. Some of the match felt “too laid out” in parts and not all of it was executed as well as they would hope. It was never bad or anything, In the end I felt that they had a strong match with AJ in particular working very hard and providing a ton of energy. This was another good match, but I have to admit that it ended up a bit below my expectations. I am curious to see where this goes. Cage’s contract status is till unknown, and they really didn’t resolve anything. Also there is Booker’s briefcase to play off of. What is in there? This should continue, and I admit I am curious to see where it goes.
Jeff Jarrett defeated Kurt Angle: For months they have been laying the foundation for the first ever Jeff Jarrett vs. Kurt Angle match. There were teases with the music, random guitars appearing, Jarrett finally coming back and then the sparring sessions on the mic over the last few weeks. It went from “professional” to “personal” in the blink of an eye, Mick Foley was added to the picture and with all of that mixed together, there were a lot of expectations going into this match. In the roundtable I said, “I have high hopes for this match. Angle has quietly been having good matches all year, and Jarrett is criminally underrated in my opinion. I figure Foley has something to do with the ending, leading to an Angle vs. Foley match.” Well, high hopes met, another great match from Angle, Jarrett delivers after a long absence, and Foley had something to do with the finish to lead to Foley vs. Angle. Sometimes I look like I know exactly what I am talking about! Excellent stuff here from a wrestling standpoint and this was my match of the night. PS: Hey Mick, dude, put up your hands. No one will think less of you.
TNA WORLD TITLE MATCH: So here we are, the main event of the evening. A match that many dreaded and a match that most didn’t have high hopes for. To begin with they reverted to the old TNA main event style brawling in the crowd, which lasted for 7-minutes of the match and was actually pretty good. But I have to admit that I am not the biggest fan of it and it featured one of the dumbest spots I have ever seen as Joe heads into a luxury box, charges and LEAPS THE RAILING AND DROPKICKS STING, who was on the steps. CEMENT STEPS! Jesus. Anyway, both guys worked very hard and it was a better match than I thought we’d get. I thought that Joe looked dominating and better than he has in prior title matches in many ways. Joe’s “beat on Sting to prove a point” part of the match was well done, as he was trying to beat the respect into Sting and prove that he deserved to be the champion. Again, we had the predictable finish, which I feel takes away a bit, even though it did work into what they have been doing. The thing is that it came right after a match with a ref bump and controversial ending. Once again, this was too much and came off like 90% of TNA main events. I am not a fan of the overall booking, especially since it was overbooked stuff, but the match was good and capped off a very good night on in ring action. With the stipulation announced that there would be “no rematch,” I am curious to see where they go with this. As always the follow up is key.
TNA KNOCKOUTS TITLE MATCH: The Knockouts Title was on the line with Taylor defending against Kong and Roxxi. I liked the tag match on Impact, and it gave me hope for a good match here. And for the most part that is what we got, a “good match.” They worked the formula well, very well actually and I was digging it because they worked hard and it never got slow. It was good while it lasted. Unfortunately it was short, and on this show it really could have and should have been longer. It is the biggest show of the year, and when they have been given time the ladies have delivered. But they didn’t get that time here. It is sad when the garbage mixed tag got just as much time. As I said, it was really good while it lasted and it likely could have been great if they had more time to craft the story and work the formula. Good work ladies, sorry I can’t say that for the booking team that only gave you 6-minutes.
OVERBOOKING 101: I have to make the point again that TNA continues to overbook their PPV’s, and that is NOT a good thing. A lot of the stuff they did made sense in the context of the angles that they were a part of, but when you continually do these sorts of things, they don’t come off as meaning anything. The JJ vs. Angle match had the ref bump and then the involvement of Foley. It was predictable and while it played into the angle well, it didn’t mean as much due to the main event. The main event saw Nash get involved in the finish, which again makes sense, but doesn’t mean what it should have due to the finish of the previous match. And then there were the special referees. Did we REALLY need two special referees and a special enforcer? I get Foley because they just signed him and they were hoping that his involvement would help the buy rate. I even understand Mongo to a degree because they were in Chicago. But two is really pushing it. But then there is Traci Brooks. This wasn’t announced until after the final Impact aired, and really it wasn’t needed and it didn’t make sense. This was another case of getting another body on PPV just to do it.
BIMBO BRAWL: To me this was the weakest match on the show. I still contend that it did NOT need to be on the PPV, especially when you consider that the Knockouts Title Match only got 6-minutes, just like this. The Knockouts Title Match meant a lot more to the card and deserved the spot and more time, but due to this being on the card, they didn’t get it. This match was one of those, “get more people on the card” matches, and it is something that TNA continues to do and needs to stop, less is more. The match was not very good, but not quite as bad as I thought it would be. It felt like a TV match that you would likely fast forward through. The crowd was into ODB and Rhino big time, which helped because they stayed hot for most of the match. This is something you can easily skip and not feel bad about.
None
Overall I will go with a 8.0 out of 10 for the event and a recommendation to get the replay. From an in-ring standpoint this was a really string show, with Angle and Jarrett shining in their match. It didn’t have that “huge show feel” in some ways, but the hot crowd and roster of guys working really hard made me feel as if I got my money’s worth. and could have been even better, but sometimes TNA can’t help themselves. I do have concerns going forward though. When you look at the final matches and see Booker T, Jeff Jarrett and Sting win major matches, while Kevin Nash and Mick Foley had prominent roles and it doesn’t look like the 2008 alternative to the WWE. We’ll see where it goes from here, but in the end I enjoyed the show for the wrestling.
