Latest On WWE Possibly Moving NXT To TV To Compete With AEW

There were rumors earlier this month that FOX had discussed moving NXT to television somehow, with FS1 as the most likely choice for the show’s new home. This would have NXT on Wednesday night, on TV, going head-to-head against AEW’s weekly TV show.

According to The Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it’s unknown if NXT will upgrade to two hours with the move, should it happen, or if it will be taped or live. However, WWE sources have reportedly confirmed that the talks are serious and the idea is being strongly considered due to competition with AEW. The idea being planned was “fairly recent” due to AEW signing with TNT.

If WWE does plan to move NXT to FS1, it could face scheduling conflicts as FS1 has a contract to air Big East basketball on Wednesday nights. It’s unlikely that NXT would air on FS2, as the goal would be to beat AEW in ratings with a developmental show, not get lower numbers. AEW already has the advantage of being on a stronger channel, as TNT is in 89 million homes compared to 82 million for FS1 and 57 million for FS2.

In regards to main roster talent, while WWE would have more of them appear on NXT, it would not happen constantly. It would be a few wrestlers every once in a while, but NXT would be more or less the same as it is. AJ Styles recently made a remark to Shawn Michaels that he knows he’s in NXT, which led to speculation that the OC would go to NXT for a program, but this is not the plan. This could change, of course, especially after early ratings come in.
