Keep Refreshing For The Latest Results

This week’s show begins with a recap of Samoa Joe putting Shinsuke Nakamura on the shelf for 6-12 weeks. Of course, Nakamura returned last week and the two engaged in a badass pull-apart brawl to close the show. That brawl is how the video ended.

Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic First Round: Drew Gulak and Tony Nese vs. No Way Jose and Rich Swann

I have to admit that I love the pairing of Jose and Swann. Gulak and Nese get an insert promo where Nese calls them premiere athletes. Swann and Gulak start like thsi is a random Raw cruiserweight match. Headlock but Swann and they collide on some shoulder blocks. Swann goes over Gulak and front flips over him a second time but Gulak catches him in a rollup. He does it again for a near fall. Swann comes back with a big kick. Tag to Jose who works a wristlock. He’s easily the biggest guy in the match. Nese gets the tag adn takes a snapmare. Nese escapes a slam but when Jose escapes him, Jose dances. Flapjack gets Jose a near fall. He charges into a boot in the corner. Nese athletically avoids a right hand and slaps and kicks Jose to the mat. Jose counters a suplex into a stalling one of his own. Body slam by Jose, who tags in Swann and assists on a splash for two. Nese pulls Swann throat first into the second rope. Outside, Swann levels Gulak but Nese cartwheels off the apron and scores with a superkick. After a break, Gulak has a chinlock on Swann. They did what looked like a double clothesline spot and both men are down. Dual tags come. Jose is the hot man and avoids a corner splash from Nese. He turns him inside out on a clothesline for two. Nese gets sent outside and Gulak starts laying in on Jose. Jose pops him up into a straight right hand but Nese breaks up the pin. Nese levels Swann but misses a charge and falls outside. Swann follows with a corkscrew plancha off the second rope. Uranage connects to get Jose the win for his year.

Winners: No Way Jose and Rich Swann in 6:39

Fun stuff here. Jose and Swann could actually make for a really nice addition to the NXT tag team division. Nothing special overall, but enjoyable. **1/2

The winners cut a short promo after the match, saying that the Authors of Pain (their next round opponents) aren’t going to just run through them. Swann has one question. “CAN YOU HANDLE IT?” “NO WAY JOSE!”

Commentary touches on Hideo Itami’s unfortunate injury.

We get a recap of Bobby Roode abandoning Tye Dillinger, leading to Sanity advancing in the tournament. Footage shows Tye getting checked on and he is interviewed. He says he’ll get to Sanity soon enough but Bobby Roode is his focus right now. He is pissed that Roode gave his word and said he was doing it for Dusty, but backed out. Tye challenged Roode to a match for TakeOver: Toronto. That footage was from earlier today and William Regal has granted it. Dillinger vs. Roode in Toronto!

Austin ARies is interviewed about who his mystery partner will be tonight. Aries makes a joke that I missed about the banana he was eating. He talks about Hideo Itami having no spine, which is the injury that caused him to run from NXT. Aries says that his partner is the one and only man that is worthy of being his partner. “Only the greatest and the strongest survive.”

Bobby Roode vs. Sean Maluta

The crowd sings Roode’s entire theme. They lock up and Roode goes to a headlock into a hammerlock before a snapmare. He taunts so Maluta hits a dropkick and taunts back. He flips Roode over and rolls him up for two. Roode counters his headlock with a back suplex. Stomps and kicks from Roode. Roode talks smack while chopping him up. He does a hard Irish whip into the corner. Maluta comes back with a corner forearm and spin kick. Roode catches him with a big spinebuster before finishing it off with an implant DDT.

Winner: Bobby Roode in 2:54

Bobby Roode gets on the microphone. He says that in five weeks, the brightest star in NXT goes international when he comes to Toronto. He says that Tye Dillinger has been whining on social media. Roode claims that Tye begged him to be his partner and he agreed because he felt bad. When you live the life that Bobby does, you eliminate the losers. Tye runs out but Roode greets him with kicks. “Ten” chants from teh crowd pump him up and he starts getting in shots on Roode. Tye sends him packing.

Liv Morgan gets interviewed in the back about Billie Kay and Peyton Royce tormenting her. They recap Billie’s win over Liv last week. Liv responds by saying that she doesn’t run her mouth. She makes moves, not excuses. Peyton and Billie attack from behind and Billie big boots her into the wall. They drag her out to the stage where Peyton DESTROYS her with a running knee. Billie says that Liv was about to complain about getting beat up, but now she got beat up again. Peyton says that they are putting the women of NXT on notice and that includes Asuka. They simultaneously say the division belongs to them.

Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic First Round: Austin Aries and ??? vs. Otis Dozovic & Tucker Knight

Austin ARies’ mystery partner is revealed to be his former longtime partner, Roderick Strong. The crowd reaction and everything is pretty lackluster actually. Corey Graves marks out at least. Otis and Tucker are big boys. Aries clubs away on Otis, ducks a clothesline but gets caught in powerslam position. Tag to Knight who body attacks him to sandwich Aries in between them. Tag to Roddy. Tucker tries to trade chops, which is a bad idea. Tucker does hit a nice dropkick. They continue to run over Aries and Strong. Roddy gets his head sandwiched between the big men. Otis goes to the second rope but gets stopped by Aries. That allows Strong to take him down with a kick. Big dropkick from Strong for two. He holds the big man in place for Aries to drop a forearm. Aries runs into an elbow but Strong tries a sunset flip and fails. Otis olds onto the ropes, Aries tags in and sends him down onto Roderick’s knees. Aries comes in with a splash onto them for two. Tucker Knight gets a mild tag and runs over the former ROH Tag Team Champions. He belly to belly suplexes Strong and splashes both in the corner. He misses a second and spills to the floor. Aries comes out with the heat seeking missile. Tag to Strong and Strong hits a big knee in the corner while Aries uses a roaring elbow to knock Otis off the apron. Aries hits an elbow on Tucker, who was on Strong’s shoulders for a gut buster. Sick kick finishes it.

Winners: Austin Aries and Roderick Strong in 5:11

Not at all what it should have been. Way too much offense for the no name guys. I understand that they had a size advantage but Aries and Strong didn’t look very impressive, which they should have. They face TM61 in the next round, which should be much better. *3/4

We get a look back at Andrade Almas attacking Cedric Alexander after his attack on Alexander two weeks ago. Using a translator, Almas explains his actions in a sit down interview. He says that he took off his mask but nobody showed him the same kind of respect. He finishes the promo by himself in English, saying he doesn’t care about respect anymore. He’s about Almas only.

Nikki Cross w/ Sanity vs. Danielle Kamella

Sanity’s presentation and theme song rule. This is interesting to see from Cross, who was such a different character on the indies. She aggressively goes after Danielle but it costs her as she eats teh corner. Danielle hits a suplex but Cross is quickly up. She yells and hits a running knee. Neckbreaker by Nikki, who bites and slaps herself before hitting a spinning fisherman suplex to win.

Winner: Nikki Cross in 1:03

Nikki Cross isn’t done yet, attacking Danielle after the bell. Eric Young finally pulls her off, so she levels him with a forearm. She goes back on the attack, while Young laughs. Swayer Fulton has to pick her up and carry her away. The referee reverses the decision to boos.

Winner: Danielle Kamella in 1:03

Eric Young is furious while Nikki bites the second rope.

Next week, #DIY take on Hoho Lun and Tian Bing. Also, Lince Dorado and Mustafa Ali take on Kota Ibushi and TJ Perkins in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

Shinsuke Nakamura is out to address the fans. He says that he’s not done with Samoa Joe. If Joe wants the NXT Title, just come get it. He doesn’t care about Joe’s cheap, dirty tricks. He will just beat him with no mercy. Unfamiliar music hits and it’s PATRICK CLARK! He comes out in his interesting getup. Clark says that they are gathered today to get to TakeOver. He says Joe will meet Nakamura for the first time, admits he got it wrong and says that it’s a story we’ve already seen. He wants to see something new and challenges Nakamura to the Patrick Clark experience. He wants to show Nakamura what that means and gets in his face. Nakamura takes the title off and kicks his knee before kicking his head off. Samoa Joe walks out but stops when Nakamura sees him. He backs away up the ramp as the officials help Clark up. When he gets to his knees, Nakamura scores with Kinshasa and goes back to staring down Joe.
