Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC 317, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host for the event. We’ve made it to another International Fight Week and while the UFC has felt really watered down in general this last 18 months or so they’ve brought a decent PPV card for this event. In the main event former featherweight champion Ilia Topuria tries to claim the vacant lightweight title, across from him is former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira who’s trying to make a little bit of history himself seeing as lightweight has never had a two time champion. The co-main event sees flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja try to extend his reign against Kai Kara-France. Flyweights show up again with Brandon Royval taking on Joshua Van, Van is stepping in on short notice for Manel Kape who broke his foot a few weeks back but Van could rocket up the rankings with a win. Beneil Dariush vs. Renato Moicano is a fun lightweight fight as well. On the prelims Jack Hermansson is making his once a year appearance against Gregory Rodrigues, Hyder Amil is usually good for a fun fight, and Jacobe Smith is basically the biggest favorite in UFC history when he takes on Niko Price. Now let’s hope the card lives up to the potential it has.

UFC 317 comes to the world from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Jon Anik, Joe Rogan, and Daniel Cormier will be on commentary with Megan Olivi doing the roving reporter bit. We’ll be in the 30 foot cage, and Nevada is down with the new rules so 12-6 elbows are cool and the new definition of a downed fighter should be in play.

Jhonata Diniz has gone 2-1 in the UFC but he’s coming off of a loss to Marcin Tybura when his face by badly mangled by ground and pound, now he’s trying to avoid his first MMA losing streak. Alvin Hines is undefeated but took this fight on short notice replacing Justin Tafa, he’s facing a bit of an uphill climb but a win would be the biggest of his career by far. Diniz is a hefty favorite at -500 to +380 for Hines.

Jack Hermansson has a solid UFC record of 11-6 and a UFC career that dates back to September of 2016, but recently he’s been hampered by fighting just once a year. Most recently Hermansson defeated Joe Pyfer in February of 2024 and now he’s looking for his first winning streak since 2019. Gregory Rodrigues just had a three fight winning streak broken when he stepped up in class to fight Jared Cannonier and fell short, he’s trying to avoid his first losing streak here as well as to prove he’s still a top contender. Decent little fight. Mic time for Dariush after the win and his layoff, he thanks God first for helping him each time he’s fallen short and getting him to this moment. He thinks he got a little lazy in the first and got caught but felt he was doing well before that. The win feels good and he feels fame doesn’t mean anything as his life is for God. When asked about the future he doesn’t care much, he’ll fight pretty much anyone.

Brandon Royval has gone 7-3 in the UFC but his only losses have come to Brandon Moreno and Alexandre Pantoja, but twice losing to the current champion does tend to put you on the outside looking in as far as the title picture goes. Royval is trying to force another title shot into his hands with a third consecutive win. Joshua Van is on a four fight winning streak but he took this fight on short notice and is taking a really big step up in class for it, but a win would be the biggest of his career and might get him a title shot if a few things line up right for him. OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Joshua Van via unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28 x2)

Best fight of the night so far, great stuff. Mic time for Van, he thanks God first then reminds us he’s only been training for 5 years which is nuts. He mentions breaking a toe in the Bruno Silva fight, which just makes this even more impressive. He puts over Royval and knew he was in for a war, he wanted a finish but feels he ran out of time for it. Asked about the future he thanks his team then plays with the crowd about getting Fight of the Night. To close he says he’s getting the next title shot no matter who wins next.

Kai Kara-France has a respectable UFC record of 8-4, he just broke a two fight losing streak with a win over Steve Erceg and given the available fighters and timing for all parties that was enough to earn him a title shot. Alexandre Pantoja is the reigning flyweight champion and has three title defenses to his name, while he’s unlikely to catch up to the great Demetrious Johnson he’s pretty firmly the second best flyweight champion the UFC has had at this point and now he’s looking to further extend his legacy with another win. It’s not surprising to see the champion Pantoja at a -265 favorite status but +215 for Kara-France is respectable for him.

Flyweight Title Bout: (c) Alexandre Pantoja (29-5, 125 lbs.) vs. #4 Kai Kara-France (25-11 1 NC, 125 lbs.)

Pantoja pulls things down to the mat into a crab ride. Body triangle now for Pantoja. Some punches from Pantoja as he then grabs a choke, it’s tight and Kara-France has to give it up after desperately trying to hand fight.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – and STILL UFC Flyweight Champion Alexandre Pantoja via Submission, rear naked choke, at 1:55 of Round 3

Pantoja is still in the shadow of Demetrious Johnson in some ways but he’s now got the most finishes in UFC flyweight history but absent DJ he’s the best flyweight the UFC has had. Mic time for the champion after that one, he appreciates the praise from Joe Rogan and then plays with the crowd a bit. He talks us through the finish and puts over his team and feels he should be ranked higher pound for pound. Asked about fighting Joshua Van next they bring Van into the cage, he was sitting cage side, and they share a brief hug. Van puts over Pantoja but feels they’ll put on a great fight and Pantoja agrees. Really good night for the flyweight division overall.

Ilia Topuria is undefeated and is a former featherweight champion, most recently he knocked out Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway in back to back fights to propel himself into the top of the pound for pound rankings. Topuria is looking to create arguably the best three fight stretch in UFC history if he can move up in weight, claim another title, and take out a former champion in the process. Charles Oliveira has been with the UFC since 2010 and became lightweight champion in 2021 but he wound up losing the belt on the scale then failed to regain it when he ran into Islam Makhachev, most recently he did beat Michael Chandler and now he’s looking to make history as the first ever two time UFC lightweight champion. The odds are with Topuria at a rather heavy -425 to a +330 comeback on Oliveira.

Jab from Topuria then a one two. Oliveira keeps coming forward. Topuria with a body jab then a slick right hand and left hook SLEEPS Oliveira.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – and NEW UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria via KO, punches, at 2:27 of Round 1

Ilia Topuria is one of the best in the world right now, and knocking out Volkanovski, Holloway, and Oliveira consecutively is a truly remarkable run. The only challenge to it might be when Jon Jones went through Shogun, Rampage, Evans, and Machida. Topuria poses with two belts despite not being a simultaneous champion. Topuria is also the only undefeated fighter to claim two different weight class titles in UFC history. Mic time for the champion, he thanks God for everything first then says he’s the new generation and next level of the game. He talks us through the finish and says they planned for this, a lot of jabs then right hands and a hook to follow given how Oliveira’s guard tends to be placed. He talks some smack to the next contenders to his new title but he’s willing to fight any of them. Paddy Pimblett is here, as is Arman Tsarukyan and Justin Gaethje, and Touria has some words for any of them. The bring Pimblett into the cage, this seems like a bad idea and the two share some words then a fairly predictable shove and separate. A final celebratory message from Topuria closes the interview.

Well on that note UFC 317 comes to a close, this was a great card and boy did MMA need something like it after a mostly lackluster first half of the year. We’ll be unpacking all the fallout from this event on the 411 Ground and Pound MMA podcast, hopefully you’ll be listening to that. Next week the UFC will be in Tennessee with a Derrick Lewis main event, so right back towards the doldrums. I’ll be back here for that event and I hope you will as well. Until then thank you for reading, stay safe out there and keep checking 411mania for all of your pop culture needs.
