BG Says: PWG After School Special

After School Special

October 1, 2005 – Los Angeles, California

Disco Machine and Excalibur tackle commentary, and as usual be sure to switch the audio channel over to hear them.

The show starts with a Co-Commissioner Dino Winwood promo. He talks about the problems he’s had with Arrogance, explaining that SoCal Val’s absence is due to the superkick Joey Ryan gave her at the Battle of Los Angeles. He reads a letter from her in which she makes him the full commissioner. His first act as full commissioner is to announce that Davey Richards will be Super Dragon’s partner tonight for the tag title match.

El GenericoHuman TornadoVS. Super DragonDavey Richards

Generico comes back with armdrags so Richards kicks him down. Dragon tags in and sets Generico in the Tree of Woe. He stands on Generico’s crotch and hits a knee to the face. He hits a snap suplex for 2. Richards tags in and hits a snap suplex. Dragon tags in and keeps Generico from his corner. Richards gets an illegal tag and kicks Generico around for 2. Dragon tags in but Tornado hits him with the Shoryuken and the Pounce. Dragon hits a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker and tags to Richards. Richards hits a back elbow and goes for a slingshot suplex but his placement is off and the top of Tornado’s head lands hard on the mat. Richards goes to the eyes but Tornado still tags out to Generico. Generico comes off the top with a dropkick and hits a standing moonsault for 2 when Dragon casually breaks it up. Generico dumps Dragon and follows him out with a crazy corkscrew topé. He climbs the ropes and hits a crossbody on Richards for 2. He hits a backbreaker but the split legged moonsault hits knees. Dragon hits him with a German suplex and Tornado falls on his face going for a springboard move. Dragon no-sells the Pimp Slap and beats Tornado in the corner. Tornado hits the Regalplex for 2. Richards hits Tornado with a tiger suplex for 2. He hits Generico with the shooting star press for 2. Tornado hits a spinning enziguiri and a backbreaker on Richards for 2. Dragon keeps him from hitting another Regalplex so Tornado hurricanranas him to the floor. He goes for his giant dive but Dragon slowly moves out of the way and Tornado wipes out completely. Back in the ring Dragon refuses to pin Tornado just yet. He climbs the ropes and hits a double stomp to the back of the head. It gets 2 when Dragon pulls him up again. Richards tries to keep Generico on the floor but when Dragon hits the Psycho Driver Generico breaks up the pin at 2. Generico hits the Yakuza kick on Richards and sets him up top. He dropkicks Dragon’s face and hits the turnbuckle brainbuster on Richards. It gets 2 when Dragon saves. Generico hits the half nelson suplex and the Yakuza kick on Dragon. He hits another half nelson suplex for 2. He sets Dragon up top but Dragon hits him with a super tiger driver for the win and the titles at 23:17. The botched spots in this match were very scary. They also seemed to make the match come apart. This was entertaining enough to stay interesting for twenty minutes, but there wasn’t much flow, especially in the last ten minutes. They were definitely going for an epic vibe at the end but I wasn’t feeling it.

Alex ShelleyVS. TJ Perkins
Alex Shelley VS. TJ Perkins
Both men are sporting the ¾ length tights a la Taka Michinoku here. They trade holds incredibly fluidly, even compensating well when mistakes are made, seamlessly integrating them into the match. Shelley puts Perkins in an inverted pendulum and then puts on the STF. Perkins gets to the ropes. Shelley puts on the head scissors and hits mini piledrivers when Perkins tries to escape. Perkins returns fire with a kick to the back. He puts on a chinlock and the wrenches Shelley’s legs. He hits a back heel kick but Shelley dodges a crossbody. Perkins hits a dropkick, scaring Shelley to the floor. Back in the ring Perkins works over the thigh and hits a kick to the face. He hits a seated dropkick and sets Shelley in the Tree of Woe. The referee gets in the way of a dropkick so Perkins jumps over him to dropkick Shelley’s face for 2. That was pretty contrived. Perkins goes for a cross armbreaker but Shelley counters to a kneedrop. Shelley hits a snap suplex for 2. He puts on the Mark Nulty Special and then rolls over into the Skull F****r. That gets 2. He hits a bodyslam and a legdrop before putting on a chinlock. He hits another bodyslam and then kicks Perkins’s arm. Perkins gets a roll up for 2 and a backslide for 2. Shelley hits a dropkick and puts on a seated abdominal stretch. Perkins escapes and hits an armdrag and a hiptoss for 2. He puts on a hammerlock and a chinlock and hits a delayed butterfly suplex. He hits a legdrop for 2. Shelley comes back with a neckbreaker for 2. Perkins hits a spinning inverted Olympic slam for 2. He hits a slingshot senton for 2. He puts on a half stranglehold and then switches to a leglock. Shelley comes back with an enziguiri but Perkins catches him with a crossbody. He hits another crossbody and counters a back suplex to a third. Shelley blocks a fourth and follows Perkins to the floor with a suicide dive. Back in the ring Shelley hits a German suplex for 2. He hits a brainbuster for 2. He climbs the ropes but misses a frog splash. They avoid each other’s offense until Perkins gets a roll up for 2. He puts on a standing figure 4 leglock but Shelley gets to the ropes. Perkins hits a tiger suplex for 2. He hits a tombstone piledriver but a somersault senton hits knees. Shelley hits the Air Raid Crash and climbs the ropes. He hits the frog splash for 2 and then slaps on the Border City Stretch for the win at 23:08. Aside from that one spot involving the referee this was reminiscent of Shelley’s Zero-One match against Ikuto Hidaka from around the same time. That’s a nice compliment. It’s good to see this kind of style in PWG, as you don’t find it in the United States very often.

Luckily commentator Excalibur hints that this will be the last match between these two teams.

Commissioner Dino Winwood comes to the ring to talk about how much he hates Arrogance. He calls Joey Ryan out to the ring for a chat. He stupidly stares at the entranceway (I assume at Scott Lost), giving Ryan enough time to sneak up from behind him and hit him with a chair. Ryan challenges him to a one-on-one match to settle their score. He’s going to give him some time to think about it, but he wants his answer on October 14.

Joey RyanVS. Chris Hero
Joey Ryan VS. Chris Hero
Before the match Ryan guarantees that throughout the bout Hero will not be able to put on the cravat. Not even once. Hero grabs a wristlock to start. Ryan counters to a wristlock of his own but Hero gets his back on. They continue to trade holds but Hero doesn’t use the cravat. They trade armdrags and Ryan gets a head scissors takedown. Ryan needs the aid of the referee AND Hero to kip up and then uses an inhaler. He slaps Hero across the face so Hero puts on the cravat. So much for Ryan’s promise. Hero hits a senton for 2. He hits a bodyslam and another senton for 2. He puts on a leglock but Ryan comes back with a crucifix pin for 2. Hero rolls Ryan up for 2. He cradles him over and over, getting 2 each time. Ryan goes to the eyes and whips Hero to the floor. That one WWE Diva Contest girl is in the crowd and has to move out of her seat so that Ryan can ram Hero into the apron. Back in the ring Ryan puts on a chinlock. He hits a dropkick for 2. He hits a kneedrop and puts on a surfboard stretch. He hits a side slam for 2. Hero comes back with a powerslam and another senton. He hits a dropkick and a back bodydrop. He hits a facebuster and a cravat neckbreaker for 2. Ryan kicks Hero’s face and hits a chinbreaker. He hits a powerbomb for 2. Hero bails and Ryan goes for a dive but Hero catches him in the cravat. He puts Ryan on the mat and hits a double stomp from the apron. Back in the ring Hero misses a double stomp off the top and Ryan hits a superkick for 2. Hero blocks a cravat by Ryan and hits a swinging cravat neckbreaker for 2. He climbs the ropes but Ryan crotches him and goes for the Duff Drop. Hero blocks it and brings Ryan down with a cravatoplex. He puts on the standing Hangman’s Clutch but Ryan gets to the ropes. Ryan knocks Hero into the referee and hits a German suplex. He calls Scott Lost out to the ring but Hero tosses Ryan into Lost. He tosses Lost to the floor and hits the Hero’s Welcome on Ryan. Lost counts the pin and rings the bell, making Hero think he’s won. Hero celebrates until Lost and Ryan hit an inverted FU into a facebuster giving Ryan the win at 25:11. They were given a ton of time and actually didn’t do much with it. I get that Ryan’s gimmick is supposed to be ironic but it’s also boring from time to time.

Scott LostVS. Scorpio Sky
Scott Lost VS. Scorpio Sky
Lost evades Sky to start. The referee keeps Sky from using a closed fist and Lost goes to the eyes. Lost dodges a backbreaker and bails. Back in the ring Sky hits a leg lariat and Lost bails again. Lost puts on some brass knuckles and nails Sky with them as Lost distracts the referee. Lost rolls Sky onto himself and kicks out at 2 to taunt the fans and throw the referee off. He puts on the Sharpshooter and the referee declared Sky out cold at 18:25. The match was decent enough but at times looked like it was going in slow motion. Lost’s antics at the end were worth a bit of credit however.

Kevin SteenVS. Chris Bosh
Kevin Steen © VS. Chris Bosh [PWG Championship Match]
Bosh is getting this shot because he won the inaugural Battle of Los Angeles tournament. Steen hits on the Diva Search girl before the match. The normally anti-Steen crowd gets right behind the cause. Let’s hear it for the PWG fans for not cock blocking. Steen and Bosh lock up and Bosh puts Steen in the corner. Steen comes back with a leglock but Bosh counters to an armbar. Bosh gets a roll up for 2. Steen goes after Bosh’s arm with a cross armbreaker but Bosh gets to the ropes. Steen gets a roll up for 2 and stays on the arm. Bosh counters to a toehold but Steen immediately goes to the ropes. Bosh hits a monkey flip but Steen grabs a headlock. Steen hits a pumphandle neckbreaker for 2. Bosh counters the package piledriver to a stunner for 2. He climbs the ropes but Steen cuts him off and brings him down with a gutbuster. Steen hits a moonsault for 2. Steen gets in the referee’s face, so when Bosh goes for the Chris Bosh Special he hits the referee when Steen moves. Both wrestlers laugh at the referee and high five but Steen holds on and hits the package piledriver. A second referee runs in and counts 2. Steen sets Bosh up top but Bosh comes back with the sunset bomb for 2. Steen gets a roll up for 2. Bosh comes back with the Steiner Screwdriver for the win and the title at 25:28. BUT WAIT! That first referee that Bosh punched in the nuts wakes up and declares Bosh disqualified for that accidental blow. Steen is still the champion. This was sloppy and long and could have stood to lose about ten minutes. The high five driver was cute but that finish was beyond cheap.

Highlighting the apple on the main menu will reveal the DVD’s Extra Credit
Kevin Steen is upset that he isn’t getting any sex in his life right now. He’s also upset that people are saying he’s not as good as Chris Bosh after his questionable win. He’s upset that PWG has decided to give Bosh another title shot. He proves that Bosh isn’t the only person who can hit people in the nuts so he does it to the cameraman. He’s incredibly upset that AJ Styles is going to be part of Bosh’s title shot. He doesn’t think that Styles’s victory over him at the Battle of Los Angeles is worth anything because of the beating he took from Super Dragon the night before. No matter how upset he is he’s going to defeat Bosh and Styles and then he’s going to upstage Super Dragon. He doesn’t say how though.

Chris Bosh is freaking out because he didn’t win the title. He went from wrestling in front of three people at a Revolution Pro show to winning the Battle of Los Angeles and it’s all for nothing because he couldn’t win the title. He blames the Mexican referee who disqualified him, which is easy for the racist Bosh. He’s still coming after Steen now that he knows he can beat him. Bosh isn’t bad at cutting the serious promos.

Chris Hero channels the Ultimate Warrior while talking about his upcoming match against Scott Lost. He pulls a little from Warrior’s WWF run and a little from his famous bigoted speech from a couple years back.

Topgun Talwar snorts some coke in the bathroom and then takes a pee next to a giant bear. The bear gets upset so Talwar lines him up. Quicksilver comes out of a stall and watches as Talwar and the bear dry hump each other. That was just a little too weird for me.

The 411BG Says

With only six matches almost everything got a lot of time. There was controversy in the main event and the tag titles changed hands but nothing of note other than that really happened. Shelley’s match was cool but nothing else was worth writing home about.
