Showtime Reviving Dexter For Ten-Episode Limited Series
Dexter Morgan is apparently done with being a lumberjack and wants to get back to the killing, as Showtime has ordered a revival of its iconic thriller series. TV Line reports that the Dexter revival will feature Michael C. Hall’s return to the titular role and will run ten episodes, begining production this winter with a fall 2021 launch planned.
Original executive producer Clyde Phillips return as showrunner of the revival. Dexter was critically acclaimed and a huge hit for Showtime for much of its run, albeit with a much-hated series finale in which Dexter faked his death and moved to Oregon to become a lumberjack after his sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) was shot and eventually dies.
“Dexter is such a special series, both for its millions of fans and for Showtime, as this breakthrough show helped put our network on the map many years ago,” said Showtime president Gary Levine in a statement. “We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series. Well, I am happy to report that Clyde Phillips and Michael C. Hall have found it, and we can’t wait to shoot it and show it to the world!”
Showtime has been looking to bring the show back almost since it ended, with David Nevins (then president of Showtime) saying less than a year after the series finale that conversations were taking place to revive the show but that Hall would have to be involved.
