Star Trek 4 is officially engaging, with the full reboot cast returning and J.J. Abrams producing. During Paramount’s Investors Day Presentation, Abrams announced (per CS.net) that Matt Shakman (WandaVision) will direct a fourth film in the franchise and that the full cast will be returning.

That full cast includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, and Simon Pegg, and will also include some new characters. The script for the film was written by Josh Friedman (Avatar 2) and Cameron Squires (WandaVision) from a previous draft by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Roberston-Dworet.

The fate of the Star Trek film franchise has been in flux for some time. The last film was Star Trek Beyond in 2016, which disappointed at the box office. In the time since, Paramount has looked at various ideas including one from Quentin Tarantino and another from Simon Pegg and Doug Jung. In the meantime, the franchise has been lucrative for Paramount+ courtesy of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Prodigy, and the animated comedy Star Trek: Lower Decks.

“We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new Star Trek film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take Star Trek into areas that you’ve just never seen before,” said Abrams. “We’re thrilled about this film, we have a bunch of other stories that we’re talking about that we think will be really exciting so can’t wait for you to see what we’re cooking up. But until then, live long and prosper.”
