Christopher McDonald Says Happy Gilmore Sequel Is In the Works
A sequel to Happy Gilmore is in the works according to the original film’s co-star Christopher McDonald. McDonald spoke with Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan and revealed that a script has been written for a follow-up to the Adam Sandler comedy, noting that Sandler showed him the first draft.
“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,’” McDonald said.. “I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that?’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2.”
He added “Maybe you should cut that out (of this audio) because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit.”
Deadline reports that according to sources, the film will be set up for Netflix where Sandler has had a long-term deal. Netflix and reps for Sandler declined comment.
The original 1996 comedy starred Sandler as the titular ex-hockey player who becomes a golfer and also starred the late Carl Weathers as Chubbs Peterson, McDonald as the villainous Shooter McGavin, and Julie Bowen as Sandler’s love interest. It was grossed $41 million worldwide and helped solidify Sandler as a top-tier film star.
