Since the beginning of 2024, WWE and TNA have been working together under a partnership that has allowed talent to appear across both brands. Speculation about a new media rights deal for TNA has intensified lately, especially with talk that TNA Impact! could end up airing directly opposite AEW Dynamite on Wednesday nights. In the latest issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer reported insights from WWE insiders, suggesting the partnership may include some significant provisions.
According to Meltzer, the agreement between WWE and TNA resembles past arrangements WWE had proposed to European promotions like wXw, OTT, Progress, and RevPro. At that time, WWE offered to feature European talent on its shows, and in return, the promotions would provide event footage for the WWE Network. These deals, which were accepted by all but RevPro, also included a window during which WWE had the option to buy out the promotions.
While this doesn’t confirm that WWE plans to purchase TNA, Meltzer suggests that the current deal might include a similar clause. Adding another twist, there are rumors that former UFC executive Lorenzo Fertitta is also eyeing a potential acquisition of TNA. WWE is believed to hold the right to match any incoming offers, though nothing has been finalized.
Meltzer doubts WWE would actually go through with acquiring TNA, seeing little strategic value in owning the promotion outright. However, he notes it could be beneficial for WWE if a cooperative third party purchased TNA and positioned it as a direct competitor to AEW. With strong ties to WWE and the prospect of a solid TV deal, TNA might become a more attractive investment. Meltzer concludes by suggesting that while WWE likely can’t eliminate AEW, there are influential voices within WWE and TKO who would prefer to see AEW drop to third place behind a WWE-aligned TNA.
