Drew McIntyre Says He’d Like to Add Some Technical Wrestling To His Ring Style

Drew McIntyre says he’d like to bring some of his old technical skills back into the ring if he can when he returns to WWE TV. McIntyre has been off TV since WrestleMania as he filmed outside projects like Highlander and The Last Druid.
McIntyre appeared on the Joe Vulpis Podcast and spoke about the amount of training he’s been doing while he’s been away from WWE. McIntyre noted that he has been doing some chain wrestling and thinks he might want to reincorporate that into his ring style if it makes sense. You can see highlights below:
On How Much Training He’s Been Able To Do:
“I’ve put myself in the ring basically every time I’ve been home. Thankfully Miro — Rusev in WWE — opened a school by the airport, and there’s a ring right there [in Nashville]. So, I’ve just been zipping down, and a couple of the guys have a key. And I won’t do anything crazy. I’m not throwing myself around, try to injure myself. But I keep my cardio up and I’ll wrestle around, and I haven’t done that for legitimately — my goodness, 17 years maybe that I’ve got in the ring and just wrestled around, like doing holds and counter holds. You never see Drew McIntyre just like technical wrestle or chain wrestle, whatever you want to call it, go hold for hold. I just call it wrestling.
“But I started just doing some back and forth wrestling, like freestyle, kind of pro style, back and forth with guys. And they were surprised, they’re like, ‘I didn’t know you could do this.’ I was like, ‘I forgot I could do this.’ But that’s how I learned. I’m from Britain, like I trained as a British wrestler, which was all the wrestling hold to wrestling hold. But then when I got to America, it wasn’t translating well. And that style hadn’t really kind of broken through yet on WWE level, it was more in the independent level. So, I’d learned how to club and kick and punch, and got so big and chucking people around. That kind of made more sense for the character.”
On Wanting to Bring Some Of That Back Into His Style:
“I’m like, ‘Man, I want to incorporate some of this stuff again if I can.’ If it makes sense logically, like a lot of guys I’m wrestling with are 5’8″ and about 170 pounds. So, I’m 6’5” and a half and 285 pounds right now. It’s not the most logical [style]. And again, it’s pro wrestling, but I try to keep things real within the confines of pro wrestling and suspend people’s disbelief.
“But I am looking at some stuff that I used to do, and steal from myself. I watched a highlight video of myself and Will Ospreay actually recently, because some of the guys I was working with in the ring had mentioned he’d seen a match with us together. And I was like, ‘Oh yeah, yeah.’ And it was a highlight video, and I saw some of the moves I was doing. I was, ‘I’m going to totally steal from myself.’ Is that — that’s not wrong, is it? To steal from yourself? I forgot I did half these moves.”
