Kane Reflects On Shane McMahon Feud, Asking Shane To Lay Off the Kendo Stick

Kane had a memorable feud with Shane McMahon in 2003, and he recently recalled what it was like working with the notoriously high-risk Shane. The two battled in late 2003 in a rivalry sparked after Kane attacked Linda McMahon, which led to her son seeking revenge. They competed in a Last Man Standing Match at Unforgiven 2003 and an Ambulance Match at Survivor Series, with Kane winning both times.

Kane was asked about working with McMahon during a Q&A at River City Comic Con (per Going Ringside). He recalled how Shane — known for his dangerous high spots — would treat every match like it was WrestleMania, which meant going full-bore. You can see the highlights below:

On Working With Shane:

“Shane was very serious about about the wrestling industry. And so like, the rest of us are concerned about our career longevity, okay? Like you know, we go out and we try to put on a good match. At the same time, we don’t want to jump off the top of a building every night. We’re going to save that for WrestleMania. Shane wanted to do that every night. And we’d have these hardcore matches and I mean he would just — it was like, ‘Dude, this is not like PPV with five million people watching. Quit hitting me with that kendo stick.’

“I remember I was at a gym and it’s like Wilsbury, Pennsylvania. And I mean, I was all welted up and stuff from doing these house shows with Shane. And there’s this dude I’m wearing like a tank top working out. This guy walks up to he’s like, ‘Man, I don’t know what happened to you but looks like you’re in a lot of pain.'”

On Moments During Their Feud:

“I accidentally kicked Shane in the head and knocked him out one night, and chokeslammed him, I didn’t realize he was knocked out. He deserved that. And that that was his fault. He went the wrong way and when I kicked, I hit him right in the head. Then with the kendo stick, he’s — man, he’s wearing me out night after night at the kendo stick. And one night I just had it. And he goes to swing the kendo stick and I caught it and I jerked it away from him. And he goes, ‘Oh no.’ And I was like, ‘Oh yes.’ [laughs]

“But no, I mean Shane is incredibly passionate about just putting on a tremendous show. So we actually had a lot of fun. That ambulance match that we had I guess in Dallas was one of my favorite matches.”
