AJ Styles Recalls Fans Underestimating His WrestleMania Match Against Shane McMahon, Never Being the Leader of the Bullet Club

During a recent interview with Sporf’s James Sweetnam, WWE Hall of Famer AJ Styles spoke about his WrestleMania 33 match against Shane McMahon and fans underestimating what they could do, along with his time in the Bullet Club in NJPW. Below are some highlights:

AJ Styles on His WrestleMania Match Against Shane McMahon

“I mean, the guy, he’s a perfectionist. And so the matchup that we had was pretty unbelievable. We had an unbelievable match. A lot of people I think they underestimated what we could do in there, and at WrestleMania we showed him exactly what Shane McMahon and AJ Styles could do. I mean it was absolutely fantastic.”

On Why He Was Never the Leader of the Bullet Club

“See, everybody thinks I was the leader of the Bullet Club. I never said that I was a leader of the Bullet Club. You could say I was the leader of the Bullet Club, but our thing when I was in the Bullet Club is that we didn’t follow anybody, including whoever the leader was. So, we were the Bullet Club.

On Winning the WWE Title From Jinder Mahal on SmackDown in the UK in November 2017

“Oh, wow. Well, I mean you I know you said besides winning the title, I mean, that was the first time the heavyweight championship had ever changed hands overseas. So when I beat Jinder Mahal, I mean, I got to talk about it. It was a huge moment, and I made a name for myself in the UK, being over so much, you know, different indies and stuff like that. So the fact that I kind of felt like I was one of them, you know, one of their guys, and to win the heavyweight championship here was a great moment.”

AJ Styles wrestled his last match, losing to Gunther, earlier this year at the Royal Rumble. He was later inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2016. He’s since transitioned to a behind-the-scenes role in WWE.
