Stevie Richards Recalls Being Featured In WWF No Mercy, Thought It Was Due to Right To Censor
Stevie Richards ended up being a focus of the storyline in WWF No Mercy, and he says he misunderstood why that was the case at the time. The legendary Nintendo 64 game ended up featuring Richards as fighting for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania due to the fact that Big Show was removed from the game when he was sent to OVW to get in shape. Richards was the first wrestler on the second page of characters and thus was the default fill-in for Big Show’s spot. He could even start the mode as WWE Champion if the player went through as Triple H.
Richards spoke with the YouTuber RGT 85 for the book The Art of N64 Wrestling Games and, as Fightful notes, Richards thought he was put into the role in the storyline because of the fan reaction to Right to Censor.
“At the time, I wasn’t aware that I had replaced Big Show in No Mercy,” Richards said. “I know these days it’s a part of professional wrestling urban legend, but I just thought I was put in that spot due to the Right to Censor being so hated at the time.”
WWF No Mercy released in November of 2000 and has long been considered by fans and critics to be one of the best wrestling games ever made. It influenced a number of wrestling games in the years since its release.
