Comment: Unman brought the Jorge Masvidal train to a screeching halt last month in Abu Dhabi. If not for one judge’s scoring of round one for Masvidal, Usman would have been the winner of every round for each of the three judges.
With wins over Woodley to become champion and Covington and Masvidal to defend the title, Usman is beginning his attempt to clear the division out a la Georges St. Pierre. Later this year or early in 2021, new challengers are not far such as Gilbert Burns, potentially Leon Edwards and possibly a rematch with Covington.

Comment: Nothing has been announced but rumors have Covington’s return fight happening against Tyron Woodley later this year. It would prove to be a make or break fight for Woodley, on the heels of consecutive losses for the first time in his career.

Comment: News spread via MMAJunkie Sunday night that Geoff Neal was out of the fight on August 29 with Neil Magny and in his place will be former champion Robbie Lawler. For Lawler, this is a must-win fight (in as much as every fight can’t be a must-win fight) coming off three losses over the last three years.
Many has wins on his record over the likes of Kelvin Gastelum, Hector Lombard, Johny Hendricks, Erick Silva and Carlos Condit. But, since he was knocked out in 2018 by Santiago Ponzinhibbio, Magny has fought twice. His two wins this year came against Li Jingliang and Anthony Rocco Martin who could not get past a welterweight gatekeeper in Magny. This is a fight historically that Lawler wins, but that was then and Lawler is no guarantee for an impressive performance.
