Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC 280, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host for the event. October has been kind of a dead month for the UFC, a couple of Apex events but nothing really of note, but all in service of this event. A PPV with a mostly stacked main card, two title fights, a number one contenders fight, and a darn good lightweight bout. The vacant lightweight title will be up for grabs in the main event when top contenders Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev meet up, both men are on winning streaks with double digits and provide a very compelling matchup on paper. The co-main event will be for the bantamweight title when champion Aljamain Sterling looks for his second title defense when he takes on former champion TJ Dillashaw, if Dillashaw wins he’ll be a three time champion and be far and away the oldest UFC champion south of 170 pounds as he’s 36 years old. The bantamweights will be featured also in the featured bout when former champion and number one contender Petr Yan looks to earn another shot at the belt by taking on budding contender and promotional darling Sean O’Malley, a win for O’Malley would also likely mean a title shot next. Elsewhere on the main card lightweights Beneil Dariush and Mateusz Gamrot will square off, and Katlyn Chookagian tries to turn back the surging Manon Fiorot. The prelims aren’t terrible either, top welterweights Sean Brady and Belal Muhammad square off, the winner probably still needs one more win before a title shot but they’ll be very close to that particular belt. Makmud Muradov tries to bounce back from his first UFC loss, highly touted prospect Muhammad Mokaev is back in action, and ranked light heavyweights Nikita Krylov and Volkan Oezdemir try to find some positive momentum in the division.

UFC 280 comes to the world from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. On commentary we’ve got Jon Anik wrangling Paul Felder and Daniel Cormier. As for the rules, the UFC pretty much self regulates here so I’m guessing they’re using the same rules that Nevada currently has so they’ve adopted most of the more recent changes but you only need one hand on the mat to be considered downed. Normally we’d get replay but that’s one of the rules the UFC is a little hot and cold on when they get to decide their own rules, but if they update us I’ll be sure to let you know. Also keep in mind we’re in the 30 foot Octagon rather than the 25 footer set up at the Apex facility.

Karol Rosa just had a six fight winning streak broken by Sara McMann, now she’s trying to bounce back and avoid her first ever losing streak. Lina Lansberg has gone 2-3 in her last five fights and is on a two fight losing streak, she needs a win pretty badly as the dreaded three fight skid could easily end your time in the promotion. The odds are solidly with Rosa at -345 to a +285 comeback for Lansberg.

Women’s Bantamweight Bout: #12 Lina Lansberg (10-6, 135 lbs.) vs. #9 Karol Rosa (15-4, 135 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: Lansberg is two inches taller while Rosa has two inches of reach advantage, Rosa is also 13 years younger. I don’t know who’s getting fired over this, but there’s no audible commentary for the walkouts to this fight and it’s not been fixed as the fight starts. Both women come out showing the jab, then both miss power hand punches. Rosa starts stalking Lansberg as we get our first “woo” about 20 seconds into the fight. Leg kick from Rosa. Lansberg lands a right that sits Rosa down, but she bounces back up quickly. Rosa’s lack of head movement is becoming a problem already. Rosa punches into a clinch on the fence. Some short knees from Rosa to the leg as they jockey for position. Lansberg gets Rosa on the fence and they trade some more knees. Rosa hits a hip toss and gets on to hop in half guard. Some elbows to the body from Rosa. Rosa with a few body to head punches. Rosa looks to pass now, she’s aiming for full mount rather than side control. Lansberg is kind of stuck on her back here, Rosa has good control and is working in enough ground and pound to make it count. Some hammer fists from Rosa, then she stands just before the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Rosa but could go the other way

ROUND TWO: Commentary has returned as we get the second round started, and Cormier is in full on podcast mode. Lansberg is pressing forward right away, but Rosa times that and hits a double leg into half guard. Lansberg tries to hip escape but Rosa smothers the motion and lands a few punches. Short elbows from Rosa as Lansberg gets on a hip again, but Rosa flattens her back out. Rosa stands over Lansberg now, she lands a couple of leg kicks before Lansberg works to stand and Rosa lands a knee of dubious legality so we get a time out. Replay confirms the knee to the head was illegal, Lansberg’s left knee was clearly on the ground, and the doctor comes into check on Lansberg. Lansberg claims she’s good and can continue, the ref then removes a point from Rosa for the blow and we’re back to fighting. Right hand from Lansberg. Rosa ducks a punch and hits another double leg into half guard. Elbows to the body from Rosa. Rosa stands and lands another couple of leg kicks, then tries to grab at a toe hold as the round ends.

Rosa tries a takedown, but can’t get Lansberg all the way down. They break, and Rosa lands a spinning elbow then a couple of knees in the clinch as the round ends.

SCORECARD: 10-9 Rosa, 29-27 Rosa overall

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Karol Rosa via majority decision (28-28, 29-27 x2)

I don’t hate Lansberg taking the first, which would result in 28-28. No interview for Rosa.

Muhammad Mokaev is undefeated including two successful UFC outings, he’s been touted as a super prospect and now he looks to cement that status as well as start looking to transition towards contender status. Malcolm Gordon has gone 2-2 in the UFC but he’s on a two fight winning streak and could get the biggest win of his career by slowing down the Mokaev hype train. Mokaev is the biggest favorite on the entire card at a prohibitive -1150 against a +750 on Gordon.

Flyweight Bout: Malcolm Gordon (14-5, 126 lbs.) vs. Muhammad Mokaev (7-0 1 NC, 126 lbs.)

SCORECARD: 10-9 Mokaev, 20-18 Mokaev overall

ROUND THREE: Mokaev looks a little fatigued, but he avoids a hook and hits a double leg into full guard. Gordon had been figuring things out, that felt like he got a little over anxious. Gordon looks to wall walk, he slips behind Mokaev and hits a German suplex then jumps to the back with both hooks in. Mokaev starts hand fighting and looking to roll, he’s leg fighting to strip the hooks of Gordon. They scramble through and Gordon gets on top again but in full guard. Gordon quickly gets half guard and looks for another wall walk. Some elbows from Gordon as he gets full guard. Mokaev lands punches then looks to jump on the back, he grabs the arm as he slips off the back though and locks up the armbar to force the tap.

OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Muhammad Mokaev via Submission, armbar, at 4:26 of Round 3

The Final Round Finish Club thanks Mr. Mokaev for his work this morning. Mic time for Mokaev, he puts over Gordon and reminds us that he’s only 22 but his team is great and he puts them over. He admits to underestimating Gordon because of the age difference and says he can’t do that anymore, but notes Gordon is a black belt while he’s just a purple belt and still got the finish. To close he says he wants a top fifteen opponent, and wants a post fight bonus, then closes with some Russian.

Here’s the finish. Mokaev gets too high taking the back in transition so he immediately begins working a leg up into position to threaten the arm. It’s a nice finish, but Mokaev’s lack of ground and pound is a real problem he needs to address.

Armen Petrosyna has gone 1-1 in the UFC but he’s coming off of a loss and now tries to avoid his first ever losing streak while getting his footing in the UFC. AJ Dobson lost his UFC debut back in February, now he’s trying to avoid a losing streak and get that all important first UFC win under his belt. Upon second look I’m fine with that stoppage, Brady took about 30 strikes without offering meaningful resistance. Mic time for Muhammad, he calls this the hardest camp of his life and puts over his team and thanks Khabib Nurmagomedov for his work with him. He thanks the crowd for their energy. He talks us through the finish then jokes that Kahbib is a monster now that he’s a heavyweight and thanks him for letting him be part of that team. Asked about the future he wants a rematch with Leon Edwards or he’s willing to fight Khamzat Chimaev at whatever weight Chimaev comes in at, then says he’ll be a champion next year.

Here’s a look at the finish. Brady wasn’t answering back and after watching this again I’m fine with the stoppage. Brady needs to sort out his striking issues, because he was getting out struck by Michael Chiesa in his last fight.

Finally, a good fight on this card. Dariush gets an interview, he dedicates the fight to his people in Iran who are resisting the government there and reminds us there’s true freedom in Christ. He thought his takedown defense was going to be better but had to resort to funk on the mat to hang with Gamrot. Asked about the future now that he’s won 8 fights in a row, he doesn’t have an answer but he knows he’s not a beggar and he fought whoever the UFC put in front of him, it doesn’t matter if he has to win another 10 fights before finally getting his due.

OK, that’s a load of total crap, I can’t imagine what was being scored there. Mic time for O’Malley, he doesn’t know if he did enough to win and felt he had to go somewhere he’d never been before. He admits to being hurt more than ever before here. Asked what he wants next he wants to watch this fight back and decide after that and knows there’s still a title fight to come. He thinks the people would love him as champion, the crowd boos.

TJ Dillashaw is a former two time bantamweight champion, he earned this particular shot with a controversial win back in July of 2021 and now in his second fight in almost four years he’s trying to reclaim the title that he didn’t technically lose. Aljamain Sterling is on a seven fight winning streak that has seen him capture the bantamweight title and defend it once, now Sterling looks to add another former champion to his resume and continue building his championship legacy. The odds are with the defending champion Sterling at -175 to Dillashaw’s +150.

People will talk about the injury, rightfully so, but Sterling put a beating on Dillashaw and made it look easy. Mic time for the champ, he mentions his corner telling him the left shoulder was out on Dillashaw then talks about making sure he kept up the pressure. He says it was his night tonight. Asked about the future and who should be his next challenger he says Cejudo is living in the woods, Dorito Vera is out there, and “sugar tits” got a win. To close he wants a car from Dana White. You’d think your champion would be making more than enough money to not have to beg for a car.

Dillashaw gets an interview as well, he says his shoulder popped out right away and apologizes to the bantamweight division for holding up the title, he says he’s dislocated the shoulder about 20 times in the camp after he tore it up. He puts over Sterling for doing what he had to do. Asked about dealing with the injury in the first round he says he just worked on hand control but the shoulder just wouldn’t go back in. He gives love to his son and family back home.

Charles Oliveira hasn’t lost a fight since 2017, is on an eleven fight winning streak, and was the most recent lightweight champion but lost the title on scale in his last fight. Now Oliveira is trying to regain the title he feels he never lost and continue building a historic lightweight run. Islam Makhachev is on a ten fight winning streak with the last four of those coming via stoppage, he’s getting his first shot at UFC gold here and will be trying to start his own title legacy by halting the red hot run of Oliveira. Makhachev is a surprisingly heavy favorite at -195 while that +165 payout on an Oliveira win has to be a very tempting value bet.

Lightweight Title Bout: #1 Charles Oliveira (33-8 1 NC, 154.5 lbs.) vs. #4 Islam Makhachev (22-1, 154.5 lbs.)

ROUND ONE: These two are the same height while Oliveira has three and a half inches of reach advantage. Southpaw for Makhachev per usual. Oliveira misses a front kick. OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – and NEW UFC Lightweight Champion Islam Makhachev via Submission, arm triangle choke, at 3:16 of Round 2

Mic time for the new champ, he jokes about how heavy the belt is. He gives glory to God first and foremost then thanks the crowd. He puts over Oliveira but knew his wrestling would be a difference maker. He dedicates the win and title to his coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov then gives the physical belt to Khabib Nurmagomedov who’s with him. Cormier asks Khabib about this and he says he’s been training with Makhachev for 22 years and says Makhachev is the best pound for pound fighter in the world, puts over Oliveira, and he says they want to fly to Australia and fight pound for pound king Volkanovski in his back yard. Volkanovski is in the crowd and Makhachev jokes he can’t see the short guy, so Volkanovksi enters the cage for a stare down. Volkanovski is very interested in that fight, then shakes hands with Makhachev and Khabib.

Oliveira gets an interview with the translator, he says if you’re a fighter you know what it’s like to be in here and have it not be your day but he’ll be back. To close he says he’s never turned down a fight and wants another one quickly after this set back.

Well on that note UFC 280 comes to a close. A great event on paper, frankly it underperformed in practice but we got the ascension of Makhachev which was good. The co-main event was a bit of a let down because of the injuries, and Yan vs. O’Malley was a fun fight with a bad decision marring it. Dariush and Gamrot was good fun though, but the prelims wound up being pretty lack luster. But if you want more complete thoughts we’ll be breaking down all of this on the 411 Ground and Pound MMA Podcast tomorrow, plus looking ahead to UFC on ESPN+ 71 next week. I’ll be back here to cover that event, and I hope to see you all here as well. Until then thank you as always for reading, stay safe out there, and keep checking 411mania for all of your pop culture needs.
