Damien Brown Talks About Leaving Military To Compete In MMA

August 1, 2016 | Posted by Joseph Lee

In an interview with MMA Junkie, Damien Brown (7-3 MMA, 0-2 UFC) spoke about leaving the military to pursue a career in MMA. Here are highlights:

On what he did before MMA: “I work in the prison service back in Australia – I normally train around 12-hour shifts. I felt, after being given my first opportunity on short notice, that I had to make the most of this second fight. That I had to do everything in my power to be in a position to win the fight. I felt like I needed to be in the position to win it and put on a show, but I had to win the fight.”

On his time in the military: “I left the military so I could pursue a career in this. It’s taken me a few years but I finally got here. I feel that decision was a good one. But more so, guys that go overseas and come back … You might be able to bring them back, but you can’t take it out of them. There are good days and bad days. So I just want them to know those good days are worth 10 bad days, Just keep pushing on, ’cause there’s a light at the end of the tunnel – go and get it. If they want something bad enough, go and get it. Snd if its just having a good day that they want, go there and have a good day.”

On the criticism of his fight style: “I’ve taken a fair amount of criticism for not being in the front foot. Not throwing enough punches. Not being busy enough to win fights if they go the distance. I know probably around the time of my UFC debut, there was still some stuff about that. I don’t really let it get to me, I just used to this as a reason to concentrate in that in training. ‘Oh, I don’t have enough work rate to win a points decision.’ Well, obviously I do. It didn’t go to the points, but it was enough to put him on the back foot and catch him. And he comes forward and turns it into a brawl. I couldn’t let that happen, so I had to go for.”
