Heavyweight Division

1) Daniel Cormier (22-1, 1 NC)

Height: 5’9

Weight: 239

Currently fighting with: UFC

Last 5 fights:

– vs. Derrick Lewis – Win via submission (rear naked choke) – UFC 230 – November 3, 2018

– vs. Stipe Miocic – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 226 – July 7, 2018

– vs. Volkan Oezdemir – Win via TKO (strikes) – UFC 220 – January 20, 2018

Comment: As many expected, Cormier ran through Derrick Lewis, choking him out in the second round Saturday night in New York. It’s the first time Lewis has been submitted as a professional and he becomes Cormier’s 15th victory at heavyweight in as many fights. This fight came about within the last month so expect Cormier to spend the rest of the year focused on a combination of family, broadcasting and coaching at his gym.

What’s next for one of the best of all-time? The biggest fight appears to be Brock Lesnar. Although, Cormier has said if Brock does not return to the UFC and if Jon Jones loses in his return next month, he would want to fight Stipe Miocic again. Whether Brock Lesnar will return to the UFC in the first quarter of 2019 is still up in the air. He is a reigning WWE champion and if he factors into Wrestlemania 35 at all in April, it would be tough to see him as a realistic opponent for Cormier.

The UFC will be vacating Cormier’s light heavyweight title next month (the new champion to be decided when Jon Jones returns to fight Alexander Gustafsson at UFC 232), to allow Cormier to focus solely on at least one more fight at heavyweight. Cormier has talked about a plan to retire by the age of 40, and his birthday falls weeks after UFC 235 in March.

A fact brought up during the UFC 230 broadcast was Daniel Cormier’s accomplishment that B.J. Penn, Randy Couture, Conor McGregor and Georges St. Pierre were unable to do — successfully defend UFC championships in two different weight classes.

Next scheduled appearance:

– vs. Francis Ngannou – UFC Fight Night – November 24, 2018

Comment: Something worth considering ahead of this Blaydes/Ngannou fight is the possibility the winner will be fighting Stipe Miocic for a vacant UFC heavyweight championship by next summer. If Cormier does in fact retire in the spring as champion, such a fight would be the most obvious featuring current contenders. Would Jon Jones or Brock Lesnar (whomever does not fight Cormier) factor into this at all?
