Jacare Souza Thought He Won UFC 224 Fight, Says He’ll Come Out of It
Jacare Souza spoke with MMAjunkie following his split-decision loss to Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 224. You can see the highlights from the interview below:
On keeping a positive mindset after the loss: “Any time I go through difficulties or something puts my back against he wall, I do well. You can be sure I’ll come out of this one.”
On believing he won the fight: “I was very confident I won the first round very well. It could even be a 10-8 round. Even though in the second round he knocked me down, I was able to recover. I thought I won the third round. But what can I do? It happens. Congratulations to Kelvin. He had a great fight, and it’s good for the sport.”
On being stung by the loss: “I’m very sad in defeat. I really believed I was going to win. … I’m in the middleweight division. I’m going to wait for the next fight, and I’m going to do everything I can. I’m going to see with my trainers what went wrong. Losing is complicated. Nobody likes to lose. I’m at home here in Brazil, and the whole crowd was behind me. I was very sad to lose, and the way that I lost. I should have done better. I should have cut weight better. I felt my legs (tiring) – that was my fault. Kelvin had a good game plan. We had a great fight, but I lost. I did everything I could. I really wanted to win this fight.”
