Mike Pyle Discusses His Fight With Quinton “Rampage” Jackson Back in 1999
MMAjunkie Radio recently interviewed UFC fighter Mike Pyle, who shared a story of when he previously fought Quinton “Rampage” Jackson back in 1999. Below are some highlights from the interview. You can also watch a video of Pyle telling the story at the above link.
Pyle on his fight with Rampage: “I’m 175 walking around, so I fought him that night at 175 pounds. He cut weight to make 206 and was about a half pound over, but we said ‘(expletive) it, let’s just go fight.’ Back then we didn’t give a (expletive). I wasn’t making any weight. It was my coach’s idea for him to be 206. I didn’t know (expletive) about cutting weight and was like, ‘Ok, whatever you guys say.’”
Pyle on how the fight went: “We fought, he threw me out of the ring a couple times. It was terrible. I was like a shoe in a dryer. I lost a decision; it was terrible. It was a hell of a fight and I was completely exhausted, I was laying on the floor. I just slid out of the ring after. I was wasted and he was tired too because we were getting after it.”
Pyle on what he got paid for the fight: “I told the promoter ahead of time, ‘You’ve got to give me something.’ He was like, ‘I’ll give you $100.’ I was like, ‘(expletive) yeah! $100!’ There were no purses. That’s my point, I was in love with this damn sport, man. I loved it and wanted to do this, (even with) no pay.”
