Hello everyone and welcome to 411mania’s LIVE coverage of UFC on ESPN+ 119, I’m Robert Winfree and I’ll be your host. The UFC is back in Brazil for the first time in a while and they’ve brought a slightly battered card but still a pretty solid one. The main event was originally Charles Oliveira taking on Rafael Fiziev, but Fiziev fell out and Mateusz Gamrot steps in on fairly short notice to replace him. Oliveira isn’t that far removed from getting knocked out by Ilia Topuria, but he’s also never lost in Brazil and Gamrot has been looking to get a high profile win for a while now. The co-main event is decent as well, Deiveson Figueiredo taking on Montel Jackson, Jackson has had quite a few fights fall out recently but the UFC like him and he’s finally getting a step up in class here. Beyond that Joel Alvarez trying his hand at welterweight is interesting, and on the prelims Jafel Filho vs. Clayton Carpenter as well as the UFC debut of Beatriz Mesquita stand out. Mesquita is an incredibly decorated jiu-jitsu practitioner so her entry into a division in dire need of life definitely merits observation. So now let’s hope the action delivers, generally the atmosphere for Brazil cards is great if nothing else.
UFC on ESPN+ 119 comes to the world from the Farmasi Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. John Gooden and Michael Bisping will be on commentary, our first two man booth since February. We should have the newer rules here in addition to the usual 30 foot cage.
Saimon Oliveira has gone 0-3 in the UFC and missed weight badly for this fight, he needs a win badly because a loss on top of everything else likely means the end of his time with the UFC. Luan Lacerda has gone 0-2 in the UFC and really needs to find his first UFC win here. Lacerda is a notable favorite at -395 to Oliveira’s +310.
Bantamweight Bout: Luan Lacerda (12-3, 136 lbs.) vs. Saimon Oliveira (18-6, 144 lbs.)*

Luque tries to roll around but Alvarez is staying on top and landing blows. Elbows now from Alvarez, and body blows as well. Luque rolls to turtle, Alvarez to a ride position and drops elbows to the kidney, that’s just mean. Alvarez with punches to the head, hammer fists as well. The round ends with Luque trying for a leg but Alvares still landing blows.
SCORECARD: 10-8 Alvarez but a slightly borderline one, 20-17 Alvarez overall
ROUND THREE: They touch gloves again, frankly they should have considered throwing in the towel for Luque. Both men work the lead hand again as they circle. A few jabs from Alvarez land, that right eye of Luque is still a mess. Alvarez avoids a left hook. Pretty sedate third round thus far. Luque tries a single leg, Alvarez smothers it and gets on top again into half guard. More elbows to the body from Alvarez, Luque keeps wrestling towards a single leg but gets kind of stalled out on his knees. Reverse triangle for Alvarez now, it’s unlikely to get a tap but it’s good control and opens up damage. The ref checks on Luque who gives the thumbs up. Alvarez should be dropping elbows to the body here but he’s just kind of holding on. Everything’s kind of stalled right now, Alvarez is half working towards the worlds worst toe hold, and he finally starts punching the body if nothing else. That’ll end the round.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Alvarez, 30-26 Alvarez overall
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Joel Alvarez via unanimous decision (30-26 x3)
Mic time for Alvarez, he really wanted a finish so he’s not satisfied and apologizes for it. Asked about the first round issue he says it was a legal blow as he kept a closed fist the whole time, he is correct about that.
Deiveson Figueiredo is a former two time flyweight champion and has gone 3-2 since moving to bantamweight, but he’s on a two fight losing streak and if he can’t get back on the winning side of things here then the end could be drawing close for him. Montel Jackson is on a six fight winning streak but now gets a chance to add a very recognizable name to his resume if he can get by a former champion. The odds are with Jackson at -340 to a +270 payout for a Figueiredo win.
Bantamweight Bout: #6 Deiveson Figueiredo (24-5-1, 136 lbs.) vs. #15 Montel Jackson (15-2, 136 lbs.)

SCORECARD: 10-9 Figueiredo
ROUND TWO: Quick takedown from Figueiredo then he moves to full mount rather quickly. Arm triangle attack from Figueiredo, he moves to side control to try and lock it down but his hands aren’t together so he winds up just moving to ride as Jackson defends. Figueiredo takes the back now but Jackson breaks one of the hooks then moves to his knees but Figueiredo keeps a ride position. Jackson stands then they break without incident. Right to the body from Figueiredo then they trade punches to close the round.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Figueiredo but could go either way, 20-18 Figueiredo overall
ROUND THREE: Figueiredo looks to push forward, he has a high kick blocked. Bit of a jab from Jackson. A few jabs from Jackson land but he might need a finish and his activity rate overall has just been low. Inside calf kick from Figueiredo. Calf kick from Jackson, that was a nice one. Left hand from Jackson. Body kick from Jackson. They tie up, Jackson with a knee then a takedown but Figueiredo kicks him off right away and regains his feet. A few leg kicks go back and forth. A lot of circling and feinting. Figueiredo with a body kick. Figueiredo avoids a punch then they clinch up as the round ends.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Jackson, 29-28 Figueiredo overall but this hinges on the second round
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Deiveson Figueiredo via split decision (28-29, 29-28 x2)
Can’t complain about 29-28 either way, very low output fight. Mic time for a very emotional Figueiredo, he says this is what training and fighting is about. He says he wants to fight Merab but knows he needs to work hard to get there.
Charles Oliveira has been with the UFC since August of 2010 and is a former lightweight champion, he is coming off of a pretty brutal knockout loss though and if he wants to retain his spot in the division he needs a win here. Mateusz Gamrot has gone 4-1 in his last five fights and while he’s taking this on fairly short notice replacing Rafale Fiziev if he can get by a former champion in a high profile bout it’ll be the biggest win of his career. This one closed even, a -110 pick ’em.
Lightweight Bout: #4 Charles Oliveira (35-11, 156 lbs.) vs. #8 Mateusz Gamrot (25-3 1 NC, 156 lbs.)
ROUND ONE: These two are the same height while Oliveira has three and a half inches of reach advantage. They touch gloves to get things going. Both men circle and look to probe. They both land rights. Double jab then a right hand from Oliveira. Single leg from Gamrot, Oliveira tries a guillotine on the way down but Gamrot gets his head free and lands a few punches. Full guard for Oliveira and he tries an omoplata, Gamrot is defending so far and gets his arm out. Gamrot steps over on another omoplata attempt, Oliveira is able to get on top then looks for the back. Oliveira holds a ride position while trying to get his hooks in. Eventually Oliveira gets the back with both hooks in and starts looking for a choke. Gamrot is able to stand with Oliveira in the backpack position briefly before they sit back on the mat. Not much going on here, Oliveira is looking for a choke but Gamrot is defending and he’ll see out the round in that position.
SCORECARD: 10-9 Oliveira
ROUND TWO: Bit of a right hand from Gamrot. Another right hook from Gamrot. Oliveira looks to pressure forward. Both men land rights. Some stance switching from Gamrot as they move. They trade rights again. Elbow from Gamrot but Oliveira lands a left hook. Gamrot jabs the body. Bit of a combination from Gamrot but Oliveira just keeps walking him down. Again Gamrot lands a couple of punches then Oliveira lands an elbow in close. Oliveira looks for a takedown, he’s able to wind up in a ride position. Now Oliveira looks for the back, he’s got both hooks in and goes for the choke. The choke is across the jaw but the pressure might be enough and Gamrot has to tap.
OFFICIAL RESULT: †WINNER – Charles Oliveira via Submission, rear naked choke, at 2:48 of Round 2
Mic time for Oliveira, he’s very emotional and enjoys the moment with the fans and his family who have joined him in the cage. He thanks the UFC brass for making this happen. Asked about the future he puts over his coaches again, not really answering the question. Now Bisping asks what’s left for Oliveira to achieve, he wants a BMF fight with Max Holloway. I could totally get behind that, their first fight had a really unfortunate ending and I’d be very down for the rematch.
