Nomadland

The 93rd Academy Awards was uncoventional in a lot of ways, but the Best Picture and Best Director awards went exactly as expected to Nomadland. The Chloe Zhao-directed film led the way for the night with three wins, taking home the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress in Frances McDormand. This marks McDormand’s fourth Oscar win, and follows up on her win for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri just three years ago in 2018. The win also makes Chloe Zhao only the second woman to win an Oscar for Best Director, and the first Asian woman.

The biggest surprise came in the final award for the night in Best Actor. The late Chadwick Boseman was heavily favored to win the award for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, but the award instead went to Anthony Hopkins for The Father. The Father also took home the award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Christopher Hampton and Florian Zeller, while Emerald Fennell won Best Original Screenplay for Promising Young Woman. The Supporting Acting awards went to Daniel Kaluuya for Judas & The Black Messiah and Youn Yuh-jung for Minari.
