The nominations for the 98th Annual Academy Awards are out with Sinners scoring a record-setting 16 nominations. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences announced the nominees for this year’s ceremony on Thursday morning, which saw Ryan Coogler’s period vampire film breaking the previous record of 14 nominations. That record was held jointly by All About Eve, Titanic, and La La Land.
Sinners took home nods for Best Picture, Best Director (Ryan Coogler), Best Actor (Michael B. Jordan), Best Supporting Actor (Delroy Lindo), Best Supporting Actress (Wunmi Mosaku), Best Original Screenplay (Coogler), Best Casting, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Original Score, Best Original Song, Best Production Design, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects.
The film wasn’t the only one that cleaned up in the nominations, as One Battle After Another earned 13 nominations, setting up another battle with Sinners after Paul Thomas Anderson’s film picked up the win at the Golden Globes. It was followed by Frankenstein, Marty Supreme, and Sentimental Value with nine nods each. Hamnet took home eight nominations.
All six of those films earned Best Picture nods alongside Yorgos Lanthimos’ Bugonia, Joseph Kosinski’s F1, Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Portuguese-language thriller The Secret Agent, and the period drama Train Dreams
The biggest surprises this year came with Wicked: For Good, which was largely shut out after the first film earned 10 nominations. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo were both left out of the acting nominees. Avatar: Fire and Ash also became the first film from that franchise to be left out of major award nominations, though that was less surprising. Joachim Trier also managed to nab a nod for Sentimental Value ahead of Guillermo Del Toro for Frankenstein.
Another surprise came in Best Actress, where Kate Hudson earned a nomination for Song Sung Blue. And Paul Mescal did not get the same love for his work in Hamnet that Jessie Buckley did, as he was left out of the Best Actors field.
